View Full Version : What your ICE!
swtour 10-19-2008, 10:44 PM That's supposed to read "WATCH your ICE"
We had a racer on Saturday who overcharged and swelled up his 2nd LIPO pack using the DURATRAX ICE Charger.
This is the 2nd pack that got charged in NiMh mode due to apparently bumping the dial/button sending it back to NiMh mode instead of LIPO.
No other issues happened..NO FIRES, NO EXPLOSIONS, but it's the 2nd pack in a month that he's ruined. (But at least he figured out how it was happening.)
Just be careful and WATCH your ICE!~
CClay1282 10-20-2008, 12:37 AM Thanks for the tip. But if you pay attention when you hold the dial the first time, it comes up with another screen. That one will say CC/CV beside "Charge". I always make sure that it says that, that way i know its in lipo mode.
I will say that is one thing i like about the turbo gfx upgrade, you have to unplug the charger to change modes.
DIRTsportsman 10-20-2008, 07:18 PM So it wasnt the chargers fault...
CClay1282 10-20-2008, 07:35 PM Nope. Once again it was user error.
gndprx 10-23-2008, 02:21 PM I didn't think you could take the ICE off of CC/CV mode when set to LiPo?
reggie's dad 10-23-2008, 04:50 PM Thats kinda funny, on my checkpoint (same charger) I have to push the dial then turn it to change the setting then push the dial again, can't see doing that much by accident. :dude:
swtour 10-23-2008, 04:57 PM ...the guy at my race that did it....this was the 2nd time it happened to him, and it ruined 2 of his packs.
Oh, and he's the TECH GUY, and on a very short racing budget...and it very protective of his stuff to get maximum life out of it. (So NO, it wasn't something done on purpose to enhance performance)
He's pretty sure what happened now, and thinks he has the chargers set up so they can't do it again...but he's still bummed that he destroyed 2 packs in a month.
...and YES, it would be considered 100% user error, but an error he didn't know how he was causing.

You are right thats the only way you can change that. Now if he accidently turned the dial when the arrow is all the way to the top then he may have got it on another presetting on the charger thats the only way i can think of that happinen.
SDL98 10-24-2008, 09:50 PM With the ice charger is there any way that you can charge a 3200 pk at more than 3.2 amps safely
swtour 10-24-2008, 10:35 PM I know some guys are fooling the ICE, telling it it's a bigger pack, but still less than 2c. (about 5 or 6 amps I belive)
reggie's dad 10-25-2008, 08:46 AM With the ice charger is there any way that you can charge a 3200 pk at more than 3.2 amps safelyBased on my checkpoint I'm going to say no, the manual says constant current will be delivered at roughly the value set in memory (actual current MIGHT be lower if the charger determines the batt is not in condition to recieve full charge)
last weekend I raced first time with a 5000 smc/brushless setup and the charger worked flawless, unless you really go out of your way with incorrect settings I think the charger might be smarter than us. ( checkpoint 1030 is an ice with some more features) :dude:
Toxic2 10-25-2008, 09:02 AM I too have had my ICE charger change settings on me. For me though it seems the dial is getting worn out and sometimes will move 2 steps at a time. So I agree, watch your settings before you walk away.

Name it whatever you want because the name does not matter.
If you wanna charge it at 6 amps, tell the charger that it is a 6000mah pack. It will charge at 6 amps.

I tried that once I haven't done that much lipo and it worked but didn't know if I would be causing any damage or would be overcharging the batt
CClay1282 10-25-2008, 05:07 PM You wont overcharge the batt. The batt manufactures recommend 1 c charging. If it is a 3200 pack they recomment a 3.2 amp charge rate. i have know lots of guys to charge them at 5 amps or so with no problems. It MIGHT lower the life of the pack, but im not sure on that.
reggie's dad 10-25-2008, 05:14 PM Call it what u will these chargers will allow u to charge at 2c (2x) the mahr rating ex 3200 batts= 6.4 amps/ 5000 mahr batts= 10 amps. 10 amps is as high as they go as I said they maybe smarter than us. :dude:
