This question is similar to the one in the chrome thread but I did not want to hijack his thread. I have a t jet that I purchased from a fellow Hobby talker and it is in excellent condition. It is the Mako Shark. He did tell me that it had been painted before I purchased it so I knew it had been done. It had been painted red. The paint was ok but you could see a few brush strokes on it. I then used automotive wax to rub it out and now it looks great! However the original color is off white soooooo.............
What should I do? Strip it ,or leave it? HELP ! :)

Well Scott, here's what I'm thinking... If it was a gift, specially painted for you, or something like the xmas secret santa thingy, I'd say keep it red. However, you say you purchased it...If the red paint was something sentimentel to the seller, he probably wouldn't have sold it. A snow white mako shows up as a 9 on MEV's rarity scale. A plain white is a 5. I guess it all revolves around whether you would rather have a red one or a white one. If it bothers you, you can ask the seller..... Now I know how miss manners feels...:):)

If it looks good , and you like it .. leave it alone. If you don't like it , strip it.... then if you want repaint it the way you think it looks best..
It's what I would do...

Ivory, Snow White, and that jaundiced eyeball pukey cigarbox plastic are three different shades. Good luck getting red paint out of any of them without some telltale staining. Not saying that it is impossible...just that it's not probable.

Ya just never know what lurks below a paint job. It's always a surprise of some kind!

I tried to strip a Riviera that had been painted red. The white definitely kept some red stains. Tried three or four different treatments to try and strip it but they didn't come out. So I painted it red. :freak: rr

Hey thanks guys. I had thought that the red paint might stain the plastic underneath but wasn't sure. Either way like CJ said the car does look nice, infact when I first got it I thought he had been mistaken about it being painted. Now that it's buffed out you really can't tell and the chrome is perfect. Maybe I'll let it alone. Certainly wouldn't want to repaint it red after I get done stripping it ! LOL

As an additional note let's just toss all the lighter Aurora colors into this hopper...or any manufacturers plastic for that matter. Some more so than others dependent on age and formulation.

Plastic is porous and it will wick stain. Especially the older stuff! It may have been in Vitale's restoration book or god knows where else, but someone reputable makes the connection that at some point we irrepairably begin to drive the foriegn pigments into the plastic with certain removal methods.

Of course much depends on the quality of the paint and the era in which said paint was manufactered. I often chuckle to myself when the old "what do you use to strip old paint question comes up". So many variables combined with dumb luck and fate make it a topic that could fill a volume or two. :p

Yes Bill I agree on the stripping old paint question for sure ! I have used Pine Sol on the t jets and always used Easy Off oven cleaner on the 1/24,25 scale car models. Both work great but with varying degrees of success depending on the color.

I've heard of people using bleach to clean up stained plastic slot bodies but I've never tried it myself.......yet. It might be worth a shot.

Actually Bob-zilla is a pacifist. It's his giant lizard (phffffffffffffft the magic dragon) that lives in the cornfield behind his house that you have to worry about.
