For those looking for a cheaper way to get into LIPO racing, I know some have looked at the Yeah Racing 3200 which has had some decent results.

Another choice to be considered could be the 2400 mAh LIPO from TEAM ORION.

The Team Orion 2400 is about an OUNCE + lighter than their popular 3200 was, and runs the 21.5 and 17.5 Brushless motors for over (5) minutes effortlessly.

Top speeds of this pack will run a little slower than some of the HIGH Voltage LIPO packs, due to the nature of the lower mAh battery it has more voltage drop.

The LOOK of this battery is identical to the ORION 3200 and the new ORION 3400, but it's LIGHTER and CHEAPER.

(I know places like STORMER HOBBIES currently has it listed for UNDER $35.00)

That should have been the battery for all the classes let alone the spec ones. Too late now.

just curious how those packs are? man, that makes lipo much more tempting to try

Yup...and it was the direction I was hoping we could take this deal once we got all the MOTORS figured out - but OTHERS had their agendas and sent things into another direction.

I still can't understand WHY people think we need to run a $150.00 battery in the 17.5 class, when it could be done with the $35.00 2400 (for 4 minutes) it would be pushing the issue on some tracks for our 5 minute races...but it's done ok in the testing we've done so far.

TomHargrave,

I've got (2) of the Orion 2400's that I bought to use for our LOCAL Club Racing, so I'd quit wasting my good 3200's (we're kind of BRUTAL locally sometimes)

I've been using them in mine and my sons 17.5/LIPO trucks and we run (5) minutes. So far they are working great. The Five Minute run takes about 1850 - 1875 mAh out of them.

The VOLTAGE Drop is higher when you load them (Naturally, they are a LOWER mAh pack)

example:

My 3200's with a simulated 17.5 load (around 22 amps) will hold at 7.77 volts for about 15 seconds, about 30 seconds into a run.

My 2400's drop down to about 7.42 at the same load, approx. the same distance into a run.

I tested a POWER PUSH 3800 with about the same load and saw that pack stay up 8.14 or so at about that part of the run.

The HIGHER mAh packs don't drop off as bad...but you end up only using 30-40% of your available battery.

But, the HIGHER mAh packs also make the cars go even FASTER - and we really didn't need to go FASTER...we were trying to SLOW them down as it was.

joe let the top level guys have there 17.5 win at all costs class...you have everything else....besides i think only florida do the guys have the skills to wheel 17.5 lipo on asphault anyways........i am hooked on lipo i just don't want to be force fed an orion RTR pack....in 17.5 lipo let the best company win.

and if "oval" stuck with those cheap packs we wouldn't have all those cross over on-road nerds trying oval and making 80 car fields at the club races..after all that is what lipo was supposed to help with ..right? none of the TC guys will even sniff a 2400 or 3600 lipo pack they all want 5200 + packs.

SPEC sounds like socialism, Be American...Buy Big. Ok, Just Kidding just watching the fourth debate I had to realease somewhere.

I bought several Yeah racing packs to experiment with 21.5 and for $35 I was more than impressed when compared to my Reedies. I was going to start running a Tamiya mini but the director said I had to buy orion packs so I didn't buy the mini. I personally did not see an issue should a cheaper pack be a better pack. It would make the spec class $40 cheaper for new racers. So finding out that 21.5 would be too slow for sedans and Yeah Racing banned I sold the 21.5 and a few Yeah Racing packs and just kept two for spares to be used in my buggy, truck and sedans.

If any club is looking at 3200mah Spec racing, Allowing the Yeah Racing packs in with the Orions would be a good thing.

boylan went the easy route and the route i liked the best

21.5 lipo in florida is novak motor only..any roar legal 3200 pack and open esc

17.5 lipo is any roar legal motor, lipo and esc

so far the racing has been real close with a trinity motor, lrp esc and smc pack taking TQ and a tekin esc, tekin motor and smc pack taking the win...

I'd put up 8-10 of the CALI boys on Asphalt against ANYONE you can throw at them in the 17.5 class. Hamilton,Steenhoven, Ruby, Hastings, and "Mr. Stryker" Petitclerc just to name a few. That's what THEY Run...and have been for an ENTIRE year.... Hamilton and Steenhoven are a couple of the guys who were AWESOME with 6 cell MODIFIED..and can handle ANYTHING your little FLA. guys can do. BIG TRACK, SHORT TRACK...and even on the CARPET!

i say that because everyone seems to run 21.5 lipo or 4 cell 17.5? joe we run on flat asphault..not the banked stuff anf you can forget about ever having us all show up and race at one venue other than maybe the birds and that is carpet. saqme for you bud..you ain't coming down to race with us anytime soon and all those guys up north run 17.5 4 cell yawn

I actually like to travel. Just seems all the big races are on carpet which I don't do a whole lot of and am not very good on it. Did make it to the Arcor Worlds last year at Freddie's and did pretty well. Sorry to see 10th scale go away there. The Daytona race looks like fun. Maybe next year

Believe me kat...There is alot of talent in the great north....Even though I get smoked by them at the bigger races I enjoy watching...

hey katfish.... come on up north and we we will show you what racing is all about. How about 90 laps in four minutes on a tight bullring track (70 ft. runline) with six other guys all shooting for the same territory and not wrecking once? I wouldn't call that an experience to yawn about! By the way, we run brushless and lipo as well.

it's getting cold up north about now..a nice trip to florida and some HE man 17.5 lipo racing is in order...right?

jh, the 2400 is a great pack, it will easily last for a normal four minute race.

katfish, stop whining! you southern boys wouldn't even have drinking water if we didn't flush our toilets here up north! LOL!!

JH, Hudson is correct. My son and I have been using the 2400 in our 17.5 NASTRUCKS and they work out great...and they ARE a bunch cheaper. We run (5) minute races.

We had our first 2400 class this weekend and most of us are new racers so we'll get more dialed in as we keep running. Our times were off about 2 to 3 tenths a lap from pro racers in the 3200 open class. Laps are still fast and the racing is a lot cheaper per battery. This is where I'll stay until single cell becomes available.

if a racer had a car setup with a 3200 and raced, then put a 2400 in his car and raced it how much slower would the 2400 be? a 10th off a lap down? has anyone tried this? id like to spend less money if it will compete

swtour

if you ran another class in the past - how far off the TRACK RECORD were you running the same equipment?

That would probably give you a better example of how far off you'd be.

I know the 3200 Orion puts out .2 - .3 higher AVERAGE volts in 17.5 than the 2400 does, but our local racing didn't show much different on the track in race trim. But that's LOCAL racing, not racing at a NATiONAL event type of race.

The 2400 IS lighter, and I'm letting the cars run that way. My feeling - Lower AVG. Volts gets a weight break....if a guy wants to run (locally) a Big mAh pack - I let them also...even though HIGHER AVG. Volts..but 3-4 oz. heavier. I think if asked... most of our locals would prefer to run a pack locally that is a little slower, but $100.00 cheaper.

I've really liked my 2400 packs. We've been running them in mini coopers, VTA cars, & oval and for keeping the cost down their great. I haven't run any of the higher C rating packs so I don't know what the difference is. I need to get more of a handle on setup and driving in order to see the difference between an orion 2400 and an orion 3200, not to mention any other 3200.
