Anyone had trouble with the pivot balls being too tight in the IRS arms?

I like the associated ones.

I use the KSG pivot balls with no problem.

The only problem I have found is that they are too thin on the front mounting screw.

I thought the KSG balls fit pretty tight in them, the asoc balls seem to fit better, I've bounced back and forth and tend to like the asoc arms better

It's alot easier to free it up if they're tight, then to take the slop out of the loose ones.

The reason the KSG balls are tight in the IRS arms is because, the pivot balls were made slightly bigger and the the lower arms were made slightly smaller to compensate for the stock parts. The pivots are bigger to take up the "slop" in the AE arms and the lowers were made smaller to take up some of the "slop" in the stock AE pivot balls.

At least thats what I was told, could be wrong

If i get a pivot ball thats tight i simply remove it and reinstall it, then work it around in the arm, if its still tight i do it again, this seems to work pretty good.

Stock AE, IRS tend to get tweaked too easy outside, not enough holding the screw on.

I like the stock ones that have been milled .060"

Tom Hargrave,
The easy way to loosen the pivot ball is to install per the instructions, then continue to push the ball against the other side with the installation tool slightly. Do this a couple of times till it is as loose as you want them.

tmckinney,
Our arms can take alot of punishment. We all run them at our local high banked concrete track and they do not tweak. You must have hit the wall a ton to have that problem.

Yes we did design them with the pivot ball hole tighter because there where so many complaints about the other arms. We tried to make a better part but again you can't please everyone.

Nope, I wish it was becuase I wreck race cars. lol. The screws just loosen up when your stacking .140 under the arms.

tmckinney,
I don't know what to tell you. I run more than that under my arms with no problem.

I believe I have the record for stress testing-Trax 70, T-Road full throttle 10.5.Replaced bent screws and went back racing.

How do you free them up?

You can install them and remove them until they are free. I use the aluminum pivot balls, using IRS1376 Pivot Ball Tool, if they're really tight I'll install them and then over tighten like you're going to pull them through the other side applying pressure and let it sit for a few. Loosen the pressure and check, if it's not free enough repeat the process, be careful and use your judgement when it starts to get freed don't leave it under pressure for too long.

Edit: Just saw Dave already answered this.

i like the IRS arms..but you realy need to use that 8-32 tap before you put them on.

and i love the amount of spacing you can do with them..from 15mm ride height to 1mm...

ScottH

I agree the 8-32 tap is mandidtory. If you do not use it you ill stress the areon the front screw making it very easy to fracture the arm Also, like it was said in an earlier post, do not go all the way through with the tap. This will keep the screws from backing out.

I'm lazy, I'll stick with the Associated. No massaging required.

I'm kinda late to this, but here's my $.02

I use the IRS lowered arms with Hyperdrive brass pivot balls.. no problems with movement and they hold up great.

even with the associated arms you it is still a good idea to tap them out

I love the new IRS ones, exept i have had 3 of them break while i was assembling the front end.. This is even with tapping the holes to prevent the breaking. Thee is one spot, we all know it that is not made really well.. Just wish i could get something for the pile of brand new arms i got.. guess i go with the IRS lowered AE style..

ScottH
10-15-2008, 08:21 AM
I do not think that they are not made very well, more that they are made to fit the "associated" style castor blocks and to do this, that is how things came out.

Diff Dude
10-15-2008, 09:39 AM
ScottH,
You are correct. To be able to use all of the castor blocks that are on the market that is what had to be done. We tried to make them differently but then the castor blocks would not work. If I had changed the mounting and designed a new castor block we would have had to raise the price and then no one would buy them.

I believe I have the record for stress testing-Trax 70, T-Road full throttle 10.5.Replaced bent screws and went back racing. You should have seen the hit I took at Omaha in the spring. It was one of the hardest hits I've ever taken. Bent both screws in the RF A-arm, broke the screw in the bumper but didn't break the bumper. Put new screws in and went back racing.

Jerry give me a call sometime before you go to the Oval masters race.
