View Full Version : Servo problem
inaspin 09-26-2008, 10:02 AM HI yall  I'm a new guy and have been setting up a car.All is going well till I bought a new spectrum 3pk radio system now I get a humming steering servo. Any one that has a idea why please let me know. Thanks in advance for your help.
98Ron 09-26-2008, 10:15 AM Check to see that your steering system is free, moves easily.
Could be that your servo can not get to its center point.
I have seen times when a tie rod has been threaded to far into the tierod end and deforms the cup pressing on the ballend of the sterring arm and really loading the servo.
inaspin 09-26-2008, 12:50 PM well I thought you had it but I even went as far as to disconnect the servo and it still has the hum I tried it on another car and it did the same hum. I am lost of this one but that don't take much thanks Ron for your time.
If its a Spectrum servo, make sure you have the correct spline count in the servo saver. I had a hard time matching mine up. It could be binding on the saver. Or is it humming without the servo saver on it?
inaspin 09-26-2008, 02:08 PM It does it even when I take the saver off of it. It also did it when I connected to another servo. I am thinking it must be the radio setup or the speedo setup.
Greg H 09-26-2008, 02:10 PM Did you get the servo with the radio system? If not then make sure the servo is compatible with the radio. The spectrum system may require a digital servo.
Verify if the servo is bad. Try another servo if you have one, or try plugging the servo into the throttle slot in the receiver to see if it works there.
davepull 09-26-2008, 02:48 PM what servo is it? this much I can tell you for sure it's not the radio or the spektrum.
I am going to assume that it is a digital servo. iof that is the case then no need to worry they all do that. sometimes loader, sometimes not
jblackburn 09-26-2008, 02:56 PM The servo might not be compatible with HSR, make sure the 3PK is not in HSR mode but in PPM mode. You make the change in the radio and then turn it off and on. This was a problem when I tried using a JR 7005 with my FAST system in HSR mode.
McLin 09-26-2008, 03:37 PM If I am understanding this right, you hear the humming even with the servo disconnected from the receiver. If that's right, you have eliminated the servo from the equation so to speek.
With mine, I can't sit the radio within a foot or so from the receiver without the servo's trying to jump a little. Try moving the radio 3 or 4 feet away from your car (arms length) and see if the humming goes away. It could just be a small amount of RF interferance.
Second, are you sure it's not the speedcontrol that is doing the humming?
CClay1282 09-26-2008, 03:54 PM The servo might not be compatible with HSR, make sure the 3PK is not in HSR mode but in PPM mode. You make the change in the radio and then turn it off and on. This was a problem when I tried using a JR 7005 with my FAST system in HSR mode.
I think you got it joe. thats what i was gonna tell him. I just went through this with a servo that i repaired. it was a hitec 225mg (not digital), but my dx3r was in 5ms mode. It has to be in 11 and above for non digital servos. So that servo was humming and i thought that i had a problem. Turns out it was the radio setting.
Also, McLin, i think he meant he disconected the tie rods, not the servo wire itself.
Dpreston 09-26-2008, 03:58 PM Is it on the car on messed with for you last Sunday? I will call you later on tonight. I plan on making it down there for some fishing!!
inaspin 09-26-2008, 04:05 PM yep thats the car lol, I am ready for the fishing myself. Thanks everyone for all the advice.
BTW its a futaba S3003 servo
Dpreston 09-26-2008, 04:23 PM The 3003 is a standard servo. Look for a futaba 9650, Thats the servo most of the fast guys run. The 3003 will work fine but they dont have much tourqe or speed.
inaspin 09-26-2008, 04:56 PM I changed to the PPM and no more hummmmm thanks yalll
CClay1282 09-26-2008, 05:01 PM No problem. Thats what i was thinking it was. Good to hear ya got it fixed.
BTW: i have been running 9650's, AWESOME servos.
inaspin 09-26-2008, 05:14 PM yep I am gona be looking for a 9650
Andy Koback 09-26-2008, 06:01 PM Make sure you're plugged into the right slot in the receiver.
davepull 09-26-2008, 08:45 PM he was using a non digital servo in hrs mode
