I recently accquired an AFX set offered by Sears in its 1974 Christmas catalog. Its the 4 lane Penske Race of Champions and looks as if it has barely been used and amazingly complete.

The 4 cars included with the set were 4 Porsche 510Ks. The cars were red, blue, yellow and white.

The white 510k has the lime green Sunoco stripping and decals. While the car is in great shape the decals do not exactly match the corresponding color of the paint on the car.

I have reproduction decals for this car which match the white and green color perfectly. What is more important here? Should I leave this 34 year old car as is or replace the original decals with ones which improve the cars showability?

Guess it depends on you. Are you a collector or a racer, or somewhat both? The purist in you shall decide. If you by chance are the collector, guess what? You'll leave it alone, otherwise you'll be stripping those bods, getting into painting and going crazy with decals and then posting to the customizing forum. :) Your choice! Just make sure if you decide to go the other way, post pix of your customizations. House rules! rr

that's a tough one.... unless I had a copy of the car, I would probably leave it alone

Jim, I suffer from what rr describes. LOL!

Nuthin sez ya cant set it aside and sleep on it a while...right? Store the stickers properly so they'll be good when ya wake up.

Things often become clearer after I push things aside for a while. Worst case scenario one could flip a coin and leave it for the slot gods to decide.

I may be a total lame-a-zoid, but I buy cars to race not for investment purposes. So I don't try to keep them unopened on pristine, minty cards. I've been that way since I was a kid. If AJs or Autoworld tires made the car go faster and the wheel wells required a little trimming to fit the tires, well say hello to Mr. X-Acto knife. Likewise, I would freely repaint (generally poorly) the car to match something I was interested in from 1:1 racing. If I had kept everything stock, it would be worth more fundage now but I wouldn't have had all the fun I've had with these little beasts. :freak:

I just say no to shelf queens. :dude:
