We are talking toy grade RC, I picked up a couple of odds and ends at yard sales. I picked up a Nikko dune buggy with no transmitter, but I have the same frequency TX from another car.
Before I invest in a battery pack and charger I have a question: Will one brand 27 MHz transmitter work with a different brand car/truck as long as they are on the same frequency, 26.995 MHz, 27.045 MHz, 27.095 MHz, etc.?

If you can help or stir me to someone or website that might, it would be greatly appreciated!

Not always. Some brands are just not compatable with other brands.

I have found this to be true. You can only tell by trying them and checking range of signal.

The odds are in your favor unless the TX you have is an Airtronics. Most others should be compatable.
