View Full Version : WHY 1/43 scale? 43rdMuscle 09-18-2008, 05:29 PM Everyone who collects 1/43 scale diecast has an underlying reason. Mine is that I like to be different. WHAT'S YOUR REASON ?? Frank -- karl s 09-18-2008, 09:25 PM Not too big - not too small! Started out with old Corgis and Dinkys in the late 1960s and never looked back... DCPDGUY 09-18-2008, 09:29 PM If it's something I like I'll buy it. I also had Lionel trains as a kid and they were the right size for that. PWSchuh 09-19-2008, 08:30 AM Because you can't get these cars in any other scale. I collect primarily rally cars from certain rallies and TV/Movie cars. These cars are not available in any other scale in significant numbers. There are a few 1/64th TV/Movie cars but not nearly as many as there are in 1/43. And of course there is very little in 1/18th. Same with rally cars. scrambler81 09-19-2008, 10:27 AM Honestly? Because that was the scale of the cars in the TV Guide advertisement. I saw an ad for the Matchbox "Oldies but Goodies" collection, and I had been thinking about getting something to put on the coffee table that didn't belong to my wife, so I placed an order. I fell in love with the '57 Chevy, and I just kept ordering new sets from there. They really are an excellent size: Big enough to show detail, yet small enough that you can fit plenty of them on a shelf. I suspect that there is probably a better selection of European cars in this scale, but I don't really care for those, so I just add what I can, when I can. Oh, and as mentioned, they fit great on a Lionel layout. I have a ton of the K-Line cars that I keep for the Christmas set up. karl s 09-19-2008, 11:31 AM ... they fit great on a Lionel layout. I have a ton of the K-Line cars that I keep for the Christmas set up. Lionel is O gauge, but I think it is actually 1:48 scale. Is that right? Not to be picky, just curious... scrambler81 09-19-2008, 12:08 PM Lionel is O gauge, but I think it is actually 1:48 scale. Is that right? Not to be picky, just curious... That is correct, but how many cars can you find in 1:48? I have some trucks in 1:50, but not many. 1:43 is generally the scale of choice to dress up Lionel layouts, they're close to scale, and there are plenty of them to choose from. ranchero 09-19-2008, 01:26 PM Interest in this scale started, as noted by another, with the easy availability way back when of the approximately 1:43 scale Dinky & Corgi toys. Then came the more accurate and exactly 1:43 scale Solido & Politoys & Mebetoys models. They were harder to find but very pleasing. This led to Teknos that were bought mail order from Road & Track. R & T led to an interest in European, and especially German, road cars. Mercedes are my favorite and the biggest variety of Mercedes models has always been in 1:43 scale. - ranchero - JasonZ 09-19-2008, 10:19 PM Everyone who collects 1/43 scale diecast has an underlying reason. No offense, but I think this post should be in the swap+sell section rboracc 09-24-2008, 03:12 AM You are right JasonZ , Sorry , but when I realized to be in the wrong section it was too late ....... I will take care for the next time . Best regards , Roberto. dragonhead00 09-27-2008, 08:35 PM Offers more detail than 1:64 and the price is still withing my budget. Honestly, I agree with JasonZ. Some unusual models are offered at this scale. BIGLOU75 09-30-2008, 01:02 PM I just stick with the Corgi Batman vehicles since that's the only sie they make them in. PWSchuh 09-30-2008, 02:48 PM Corgi/Huskey also made the Batmobile in 1/64th. BIGLOU75 09-30-2008, 06:15 PM Corgi/Huskey also made the Batmobile in 1/64th. Well, their most recent releases, anyways. I don't think they make the 1/64 scale anymore. 69Stang 10-01-2008, 10:51 PM Like so many others have stated, for me it's the wonderful subject matter that just does not appear in other scales very often. Though I have a few 1:18 and 1:32 scale cars in my collecton, I still prefier 1:64 just based on my taste. But the 1:43 keeps pulling me in based on the subject at hand. I just wish they scale was not so over priced. Yep, "over" priced! But hey, what's a poor diecast collector to do? ClearHooter 10-10-2008, 08:37 PM I too got into a 1/48 thing with my WWII aircraft models. 1/43 is pretty darn close. If I had it to do over I'd of went with 1/72 aircraft. I've got quite a few 1/43 cars, but they are mostly replicas of ones I've held in high esteem throughout my life. I like the detail over 1/64 and honestly can't tell any more detail in 1/18 over 1/43. Cost has become a factor in expanding this scale in my collection. So now I look for deals. 69Stang 05-18-2011, 10:03 AM I though this was a great question and pulled it back up kicking to the top. The answers got a bot off topic, but the question was a good one. I need to think my own response to this as well. gray20 05-18-2011, 07:48 PM For me it was Road champs and later Gearbox, I know they aren't nearly as detailed as some of the other 1/43s but that was part of why it was easy to get into them. I'm also just a big fan of emergency vehicles and Road Champs had a big selection. 69Stang 05-18-2011, 08:08 PM I have not seen a lot of 1:43 response castings Gray. I would love to see some pics of your collection, sound fun and different. SMS88 05-19-2011, 04:01 PM Not too big - not too small! Started out with old Corgis and Dinkys in the late 1960s and never looked back... Same story here  But I must add, that I always enjoyed the detailed engines and opening parts as well as good suspension, rare features in any other scale! jinx 05-19-2011, 05:00 PM Not too big - not too small! Started out with old Corgis and Dinkys in the late 1960s and never looked back... Somewhat the same, although, there was a large gap between the end of my Corgi / Dinky era & then starting to collect as an adult (or should that be as a big kid?). Just picked up with the same size cars. Steve JSB 33 05-20-2011, 03:01 PM Selection, price and size. 69Stang 05-21-2011, 09:38 AM For me, it's just the evolution of my taste in race cars. I grew up on 1:64 and only dabbled in the larger scales periodically through the last 40 years. But as my collecting taste caught up to my personal preferences of world wide road racing, 1:43 was the natural progression. It simple is where I find the majority of cars and subject that capture my interest. I do like the overall size, and the detail is nice, but not really overwhelming all the time. I have some 1:64 that will rival there larger cousins. but overall I do like the larger surface area to better replicate the livery and decal details. But really overall, it simple is the scale where most of my taste are produced. Speaking for myself, had my taste in race cars been readily available in 1:64, I would be there exclusively. But as it is, I am a happy 1:43 fan. I just wish they were cheaper!!!! I spend the same money per month as I use to in my smaller scale days, but I don't get near the fun you have with adding new additions, as they come far fewer and further between! gray20 05-26-2011, 08:20 PM I have not seen a lot of 1:43 response castings Gray.
