I was just browsing around and found the fantom line of brushless motors, I see they can be run sensored as well as sensorless. Does anyone have experience with these motors, and how do they compare with Novak?

I don't know about the Fantom, but I think you could run any sensored motor that has a good rotor magnet with a sensorless controller. Sensorless startup might be iffy in oval with the higher turn motors because of the rollouts we use (the reason for "RS" version of the Tekin R1). I am running a Novak 8.5 [sensored] in an offroad truck with a Castle Sidewinder ESC [sensorless] and it runs fine. But that is an 8.5 not a 17.5 or 21.5.

Thanks for the info. I already have an xbr so I was going to run sensored anyway, but I was looking at the fantom stuff and was wondering if they would be fast. One more thing, our 12th scale oval class is now an outlaw class- anything goes. What is the fastest motor I can run and still hope to have control? I also have lipo.

Hudson Hornet... The Fantom is a Feiago/Trinity based motor, much like the others on the market from Putnam, OHP, etc...

We've been running the Putnam brushless in offroad this summer, and motor-for-motor, have been killing the orange alternative.

Thanks! If I was to run a 17.5 with lipo, what speeds should I expect? In other words what is the brushed equivalent?

Hudson, most of our local 10.5 4 cell racers are changing over to 17.5 lipo this month. This is ashpalt oval, the speeds seem to be about the same.

Our 12th scale guys just changed over from 19t 4 cell to 13.5 4 cell with the speeds remaining about the same.

I have a fantom 17.5 that I'm going to run this weekend at the indy velodrome. After talking with Jeff at Fantom, motor should be pretty stout.. and on the plus side it is about $30 cheaper than a novak!!! so more bang for your buck..

Let me know what you think, as I am in the market for the same motor.

It will be very fast we have been running them for the last 4 weeks and they screw .... I mean they qare very fast ... gear down 1-2 theeth as they have more RPM s on the dyno [i know we dont race dynos ,they were the best watts and best torque.. SRM

did you run the timing at 20deg or did you back it down to 10deg

hey miller those trinity motors are not the newset motrs from trinity?

boylan had the latest motors from them and they have alot more shaved off and alot more cooling vents and the end bell has 2 screws that allow for timming changes...

they are on the trinity web site ..not for sale yet though?

find out when we can get those from troy.

thanks bill

Is the fantom motor sensored?

you can run it sensored or sensorless. The sensor harness comes off.

What are the differences between sensored/sensorless? Does one have more of an advantage over the other?

I like the fact that you can adjust timing with sensored as well as it can shut the motor down if it gets too hot. It should also be more efficient with sensored.

just picked up a couple of these motors and a noob at oval.

about a 160' line. for 4cell 13.5 what is a good place to start for gearing

are you guys turning timing all the way up to 20 or is 10 safe.

CClay1282

20 will work great for oval! as for the oval, i would start with a 3.5 inch rollout.
