Redneck Vampires are always interesting. My favorite part of last night's episode was the opening title sequence. Very creepy!

The blurb in TVGuide sounded really stupid. Is it any good?

I've read (and listened to via recorder books) a few of the novels. They can get a bit soap-operaish at times, and there is a feminine feel when describing fashion and the like. But overall they've been a fun read with interesting characters. A friend at work saw it and enjoyed it. According to her there were some differences between book and mini series, one of which is that the show was "sexed up" a bit from the books.
So overall did you like it, and will you continue to watch?

Chris - I wasn't knocked out but I was intrigued enough to want to watch it again next week. I'm not predisposed toward this type of material but Paquin is an appealing actress to me and the whole "Southern" thing is a nice twist. And yeah, it was pretty "sexed up". There was one scene that would qualify as NC 17 at least. I'm fine with that if it's there for a reason. At least in last night's episode, the sexuality seemed justified.

I'm telling you though - that opening title sequence is a killer.

Thanks - she recorded it and said she'd lend it to me - I'll give it a shot.
Hmmm...killer title sequence - literally?

I agree with your sentiments except that I'd think an "R" rating would be more appropriate for some of the scenes. ;)

I saw all of the "preview" stuff on HBO, watched the first episode twice and was really intrigued. I've always had a strong interest in the supernatural stories that get told and like what Iv'e seen thus far. I agree w/Zorro tho that the scene between Jason and the one chick was NC-17 in it's content - I mean, it doesn't get any more sexually explicit than what they showed going on when they were on the couch or a bit later between those two characters. I'm no prude and had no major problems w/the scene - just that it was a lot more explicit than I thought we were going to be seeing. The other scenes I agree were more like an "R" rating.

Overall, I think that this'll be a keeper of a series. The character development in the first episode was up to the standards we've come to expect from Allan Ball - creator of "Six Feet Under" - and the overall "world" they're in is rather interesting thus far. I think that Anna Paquin was an excellent choice for Sookie Stackhouse, tho have no knowledge of this series whatsoever. I just really like her character thus far.

Did anyone catch one of the "commercials" they had for "True Blood" about a week or two prior? It was a commercial for a Vampire Motel in Shreveport, Louisiana that was fully bonded, had full security and offered rooms w/o windows and comfortable coffins for their guests stay. I think they also mentioned that they stocked True Blood in every room as a complimentary item. Kinda funny, I thought. :)

SPOILERS - tho it's a part of the series background, so I categorize it as MINOR:

Vampires "came out of the coffin" 2 years prior to this series.
They did so because some Japanese scientists developed synthetic blood - packaged for public consumption and called True Blood. Thus, Vampires felt it was "safe" to come out of the closet.
There's been no mass killing of vampires mentioned, so the public seems "alright" with this knowledge.
The series deals w/issues of racism that I think will be shown in interesting - if predictable - fashion.

If you've got even slightly passing interesting in supernatural critter stories and like well-written shows, I recommend at least viewing the first episode.

I've also always liked Lois Smith (she plays Sookie's grandmother) ever since I first saw her in "Five Easy Pieces". She's just a damned fine actress.

My 15 year old son watched it with my wife and I. I-yi-yi! We didn't expect sex scenes like that. Not hardcore, but, probably classifiable as soft core porn in some isolated scenes.

I figured it would be a soap opera like series. It was refreshing to see a show that that depicts vampires as a minority that is fighting for their rights. The humans seem more evil than the Vampires, at least after the first episode.

This is not the first soap opera vampire series. Does anyone remember the vampire series from the late 90's called "Kindred: The Embraced"? That was a pretty cool mini-series.

Then there was Dark Shadows in the late 1960's. Dark Shadows was definitely geared towards female viewers. Personally, I thought it was boring.

There've been a number of Vamp-Series that were somewhat soap-operaic. "Kindred: The Embraced" was great and was based off of a Role-Playing Game called "Vampire: The Embraced" in which the vampires were called Kindred.

Then there's both versions of Dark Shadows, as you mention. The second ran in the 1990's for one or two years.

There's also "Forever Knight", set in Vancouver, BC. I wasn't as in to it as I perhaps should have been, but it originally aired late at night on some oddball channel. By the time I heard about it, it was in the third season. I tried to catch it in syndication on SFC, but kept missing episodes and eventually gave up on it. While based on a police drama it was still very much a soap about a Vampire and how he dealt with things. IIRC, the original pilot/movie had Rick Springstreen as Gerard.

There's also Buffy the Vampire Slayer which had snappy dialogue, pretty tight writing and was generally just pretty darned funny, but usually seems to get slagged by a lot of folks. While technically not a Vampire Soap, it had Vamp's in it as main characters - plus that whole slaying of vampires thing was going on. :)

There was a really short-lived series in the UK, as well. It was called Ultraviolet (1998) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169501/) and was much better than the rather lackluster movie w/Milla Jovovich. It was much superior, IMNSHO, and ended on a cliff hanger. I'm guessing that it wasn't popular enough to be picked up for a second season. It only had an initial run of 6 episodes, as many UK series seem to only be given, such as one of my favorites, Primeval (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808096/) (which is now in it's third season in the UK).

Seems like I'm missing another series from the late '90's/early '00's.

Anyhow, I'm definitely giving this series at least a couple of episodes before I decide to write it off. I was definitely intrigued by the opening episode and can't wait to see where they take it.

The new Dark Shadows series only ran half a season, unfortunately for DS fandom. It was very good--high production quality and storyline from the series and the House of Dark Shadows movie.

BTW: Is NC-17 more restrictive than an "R" rating? I was thinking "R" was more restrictive. In any case, yes, those scenes meet the definition of soft-core porn, IMHO.

R - Restricted. Children under 17 allowed if accompanied by parents or adult guardian.
NC-17 - No Children under 17 allowed, period.

Well, I've never ready any of the books in this series, so can't comment on how faithful it is to that. However, being a die-hard horror fan, I'm really likin' this series. Seems the author cast her net far when she came up w/the background information her vampires, as well as their powers.

I'm also liking the character of Sookie and the mystery of her abilities. I'm guessing that she's from a long line of "witches and warlocks". Love how that chain seemed to find it's mark so quickly on Mackey when Sookie threw it at him.

Anybody else who's still watching catch that there was a pic of a little girl lying down in the grass with a dog seemingly watching over her? I think that was in Sam's office in Episode 3, but might be wrong about the exact where and episode.

Griffworks,

I noticed that small dog hanging around allot in the True Blood series. My wife and I have a theory that the dog is a shapeshifter because it's always watching Sookie and looks like he is contemplating somthing. The restaurant owner is awfully suspicious because he has a crush on Sookie. I remember he was growling while he was asleep when he spent the night with the black girl. He also had a photo of the waitress that was killed under his bar (the second murder that Sookie's brother Jason was a suspect in). We think that he may have the ability to turn into a dog, like a werewolf.

Y'know what? That tracks! Excellent deduction!

Another thing is that in the first episode, Sam Merlotte (the restaurant owner) went to follow Sookie outside when she went to follow after Bill Compton the first time he made a public appearance, right? What happened to him if he followed her out the door...? Your explanation of him being some sort of shape shifter fits in perfectly.

Duh... I should've picked up on that sooner. :o

Everything took a turn last night.

Sam and Tara seem to be involved with each other now.

Tara made up with her alcoholic mother.

Sookie and Bill are romantic lovers and Bill is feeding on her with her permission.

Sookie's grandmother was killed by a non-vampire.

Jason is addicted to vampire blood, out of control, and dumber than ever.

I still haven't verified how that curious dog fits into the picture and suspect it's Sam.

Jason the sex addict... Saw it from the second episode, but man have they taken it to the extreme! And you're right, Roland - he's dumber than ever! The stereotype about what a man thinks with is definitely true w/Jason, that's for sure! I won't go any further, tho....

That whole thing w/Sookie's immediately allowing Bill to feed on her really threw me for a loop. I wasn't really expecting it to happen quite as it did.

I'm a bit dismayed by them killing off Adele, tho. I really liked her character and wanted to know more about her past. They were alluding to her knowing a bit more about the local area than she was letting on.

Is everyone in that danged town a hypocritical busybody or what?!? I can't believe there are so few people in the town who are really good folk. You've got Tara, Lafayette, Sam and...? I mean, I can understand how Sookie's ability can be a bit unnerving, but she's always presented herself as a nice enough young lady - why all the resentment?

Oh, well. I realize that the real meat of the show - and I'm guessing the novels? - is how people deal w/prejudices and "interracial relationships". It just bugs the crap outta me when folks behave so poorly.

I still haven't verified how that curious dog fits into the picture and suspect it's Sam.
It's Sam alright. In Ep's 5 & 6 it's hinted at even more heavily than before. mostly by what Sookie said about when she "hears" Sam - "flashes of emotion instead of words or pictures".

And then the way Bill has been looking at Sam, as well as his comment in Sookie's bedroom about "marking your terriroty".

Then not long after sunset we see Bill standing outside the Stackhouse home and the dog walks up, right? Bill and the dog look at each other, then back and the house and stand there in silence. To me that's an affirmation that Bill knows what Sam is and that he and Sam have come to an understanding of some sort.

Just my thinkin' on things where Sam is concerned.

Roland

That's exactly what I thought when he talked about marking territory.

From the previews of next week, it looks like the main head vampire at the vampire wants Bill to share Sookie with him. Bill and Sookie don't seem too keen about that. I was hoping that Bill could bring Sookie's grandma back to life, but, I guess it was too late.

Still haven't watched last nights episode - prolly tonight. If he's a werewolf, I'd argue it's more like a were-canine. And he's not exactly a very big dog, either. Maybe 50lbs or so?

'Course, combine human intelligence with canine sense of smell, teeth and agility and you've got something that at least poses a pretty good threat to a human who gets taken by surprise.
