Ok, brand new LRP Spher 07 caught fire for no reason. Changed wires to 12 gauge and installed it in car. Charged my new SMC 3200 and plugged it in and left it on the stand. Hour later the whole negative battery slot on the circuit board had melted and melted the speed control. Any ideas what happened.

Some of them do that. It sucks. Has happened to me and a bunch of others. Seems to happen on the 07s but not the TCs.

Great that sucks, I have never seen a speed control that was turned off catch on fire, I guess its back to a Novak to hell with the LRP.

All you have to do is send it back if it's new it's under warranty. They will replace it and generaly cover the shipping.

Even if you changed out the wire to 12 gauge, some where you would think they would say no because I changed the wire.

Their customer service is hit or miss from what I hear, but they were good about replacing mine. Took about 3 weeks, no questions asked.

When you get it back I'd sell it or trade it for a TC. They seem more reliable.

Seen a Novak do the same thing. Shut off, sitting on bench- turned to an orange blob. I'd attribute it to "it happens". Is it possible you overheated the board changing out the wires?

KLUPI, Cody's GTB went up in flames at Nats. this year, ran 10 laps and the car just stopped and went up in flames. So Novak has got the problem also.

I have seen dozens of speedos go up these past few months.. sucks for the racers it costs money, time, and days away from their local racetrack...

we had several the end of LAST year, I don't think I've seen one so far this year...(either LRP or Novak)

We did have a LIPO Swell today (Both cells) on the ICE charger, racer uses it for both 4 cell and Lipo and forgot to switch it back - ruined a nearly new pack.

It all goes back to "BE CAREFUL"

With the LRP deal going up AFTER changing the wires - to go UP with the switch OFF, but the battery plugged in - it could have over heated the board, and if so, it probably bridged a piece of solder someplace...who knows, and it's hard to find after the fact.

the only thing about the novak going up in flames is that the person with the novak will have there replaced within a week or so....novak's customer service is top notch

not saying there isint a problem ..... but. When you change the wires its VERY important , do one wire, let the thing cool off, before you do the next. If you dont transfer the heat when you solder the wires your overheating the speed control to well over what it was designed for.

Tin the soldering iron, turn up the heat on the iron if possible, a few seconds after maybe like 3 ...... you should be able to remove the wire, or seat the new wire any longer then that your transferring to much heat to the speedo IMHO.

DOUBLE check, make sure theres no stray wires from one post to the other or solder blobs.

I had a GTB go up in flames myself. Sent it back to Novak which they replaced under warranty. I was racing DO running 13.5 using a 4800 Orion. The replacement esc included a diode on the power wire. I have replace my other GTB with the same diode power wire which I got from Charlie and have not had any problem since. Seems to be a problem using lipo batteries.

My most recent experience with LRP and Novak has been pretty good. I had a LRP Burn up about 10 laps into and I hadn't soldered on the ESC or motor since i installed it new.

I sent the motor to Novak and the ESC to LRP and sure enough, both came back a day apart. The turn around was like 13 / 14 days very pleased.

From what i have seen over the years with LRP esc's is after a good bang from a wreck some will self ignite. Not sure what makes some do it and some not, but it is pretty common... Ive seen some pretty cool V 7.1 fires back in my tc days..
