Hello. I used to race 1/8 scale at K&B until they closed...kind of got out of the sport for a while but have been wanting to race again... I own a business in the Reynolds Industrial Park in Greenville, PA - just North of Sharon / Hermitage...about 5 miles from the OH line.... I have land available to build a decent sized R/C dirt outdoor track and have been seriously considering investing in it....my existing building for my current business can provide power, restrooms, etc etc...maybe even some room for a few shelves of fuel, glow plugs, tires, parts, etc.... I really don't have any contacts any more with anyone who races RC so I wanted to post here to see if anyone would even have any interest in such a thing in this area? I do not wish to take away from anyone elses track or events, I just want to see if there would be any interest? I have some capitol to invest in a track and am considering it.... am i nuts and should I just go race at other established tracks?

Just thought I'd post to see what kind of reply's I get....

Thanks!
Erik

I'd be interested, as I live in Sharpsville, PA. It's too late in the year to open an outdoor track now, but you could certainly plan on starting one in the spring for next summer's outdoor season.

A few things to think about first: It is a lot of work to build and maintain an outdoor track tho, especially one running 1/8th and truggies. Do you have a few hours every day to devote to grooming and working on a good sized track? Do you have/want to spend a few thousand $ on an AMB lap counting system? How much will border pipe, wood for a driver's stand, weekly water/electricity cost? Is the dirt inplace good enough or will you have to bring in more? Do you have earthmoving equipment to build, groom, and rebuild the track? How many racers would you want/need to show up every week to make it worthwhile? There are already at least 5-6 other good outdoor tracks around within an 1-1.5 hour drive from your area, so you probably won't attract a large crowd, just the people who live closest to your track.

Not trying to discourage you, I'd love to have a big 1/8th track only 20 min away, but I'd hate to see someone spend a ton of time and money and see only 5 ppl showing up every week.

Thanks for the reply's so far. Stealth RT - to answer some of your questions - I do have time to keep the track maintained although I would be very interested in an RC club with multiple people helping. I do realize there are some good tracks around and one of my "fears" would be to build this thing and get 3 people to race on a weekend...I love the sport but not that much... I do have the capitol to invest into an AMB system, drivers stand, etc. I have access to some earth moving equipment to build it....

Still debating.... two big things - one being enough people to race, another being enough people to get involved...But glad to see a few reply's already...somewhat encouraging....

Thanks!

Good luck with your venture! Hope you can get things going. My only suggestion would be that you have an Oval to go along with the Off Road track. You can incorporate the two together and then you will have a larger group of racers to hopefully support your track.

Good Luck!

Chim - I remember you from K&B - didnt get to really know anyone up there, but I remember the name. Yes - any advice or anything you could help out with would be huge... Do you think there would be any x K&B folks interested in participating? Am I nuts for wanting to do this?

Good to hear from you & thanks!

The only thing I highly recommend doing is getting good dirt. If you buy cheap dirt that doesn't hold water and doesn't stay compact and gets loose, then people won't come. If you get a combination of dirt around 80% clay and 20% top soil, and constantly water and run the track, then you WILL have a nice track. Once the track is open just have it a practice track until you establish a group of 10 guys or so, and then go from there. for example, try advertising, raising money for a lap counter and a nice watering system, and build a TALL drivers stand.

Hope this helps...we need more tracks in western Pa.

RIPrc,
If you can, take a trip up to Oakhill R/C raceway this Saturday. Few miles south of Waterford PA, off RT 97 Points race and should be a good crowd. Here is their web site: http://www.oakhillrcspeedway.com/. Practice starts 9:30 am Racining at 11:30 am
They have three tracks Nitro, electric and oval. Come on up and race, you will not be dissappointed. Good people. Talk to Chuck and Chris and see what all is involved.
Seems to me a lot of work and investment into starting and running a track.
Check OakHill out

I'd love to check out your place sometime. I live in Latrobe, but I could be at the border of PA and Ohio in about an hour.
