I've been frequenting this Disney fan board recently. Dig this:

Some of these guys show great modeling chops. I particularly note the use of both cartoon and realistic figures, and the stunning Indiana Jones temple.

P.S.: I think it's too bad model railroading here is ghettoized in the "Odds & Ends" bin. :freak: Is there any question that these are models?

Toyroy,

I've seen model railroad cars and engines whose quality and attention to detail would put the finest styrene or resin model to shame. A lot of model railroaders are avid detailists and realists, and their layouts are marvels of nature.

I don't think they're being marginalized at all. Their side of the hobby is just quieter than ours. HobbyLobby certainly appreciates them!!

Quieter here. Not in other forums. "Models" is a main HobbyTalk category, yet Model Railroading is not to be found there, but listed under "Odds & Ends". If that's not marginalization, what is?

it's probably due to how Hankster percieves the interest in certain subjects . have you thought about asking him to start a forum for the RR guys ?
model railroading is quite prevalent in most of the hobby places i go to so i figure there's more RR guys out there than there are us scifi/monster hobbyists .

A lot of model railroaders are avid detailists and realists, and their layouts are marvels of nature. One thing that amazes me about most model railroad enthusiasts is how much time they'll spend detailing the engines, rail cars, tracks, topography, etc., trying to make them look as realistic as possible, but they'll take the obviously plastic building structures, figures, and vehicles out of the box and drop 'em into their layout without any attempt at making them look more realistic.

For me, it completely ruins the effect. Very rarely have I seen model railroaders who have put just as much effort into the building structures, etc., as they put into the trains themselves. While I realize buildings, people, and vehicles are not the focus of their fascination, I still don't understand why they would overlook or ignore the items that make their layouts look "toylike". I suppose it simply depends on the level of realism they're trying to accomplish, but...

On the other hand, there are many excellent structure scratchbuilders, such as the one in the link. This totally custom temple is so good, it suggests a kit of something equally original.
