What is the best way to cut carbon fiber with out breathing in the dust?

Thanks

The practical way is to get a mask while your cutting. The other way, if you have the ability, is to cut under water. If you had access to a media blasting cabinet, that would work as well, but that would be a pain in the butt.

Lay masking tape on each side of the carbon fiber sheet. Mark out the outline of the part you wish to cut out on the masking tape. The tape helps prevent "fuzzing" on the edges, and makes cleanup eaiser. If your using a bandsaw..cut away..but you will still need to cleanup the edges,,ala a file and sandpaper. If your using a coping saw, you will still have a little fuzzing on the edges, which can be cleaned up with 220-320 grit sandpaper. Carbon fiber is nothing more than a fiberglass material, layered in a carbon based filler. Using a bandsaw, file and sandpaper will not produce enough dust to worry about. Using a belt grinder etc. may produce more dust, and then you should wear a dust mask.

If you're using a dremel or something that will make dust you can put a shop vac hose near where you're cutting to suck up the dust. I've done that before, it helps to control the dust that a dremel throws.

don't do this with out a respirator, those fibers and carbon dust are harmfull to your health, those paper masks are useless, at least make a table with a opening and a good shop vac below to remove the dust. :dude:
