View Full Version : Where do we Start?
trackman 09-02-2008, 11:39 PM Hello Tanksters,
We have been looking at some reviews on what is available to get started in the R/C Tank world .
At an entry level what would some of you recommend .
We have looked at the vstank at around $100.00 .

What are some good features and qualities to look for in these kind of R/C's?
Panther F 09-03-2008, 07:36 PM I think 1/16th offers a better/larger scale that has more upgradable parts on the market and for about the same money as those. They are RTR's (ready to run) so there's little building needed. If you are into building, a Tamiya tank kit starts at around $500.00 or more.
Here's a dealer here in the states that handles the Heng Long RTR's in 1/16th scale: http://www.rccommand.com/

I totally understand what your saying about the 1/16 being more upgradeable and would probably be the better choice over the 1/24 I linked to.
Correct me if I'm wrong , But it looks as if the link you provided is showing tanks For around $70 - 100 bucks and that would also require buying a basic complete battle system at $140.00 to have infared cabablilty for shooting the opponent. So with the basic battle ready system and tank it would be 2 or 3 hundred bucks.
Do you also have to buy a radio system for it? Probably 4 channel minumum. Another 100 bucks for a total of 4 to 5 hundred bucks for one battle ready tank.
The link I showed has a battle ready tank with radio, infrared system for 119 and being a Tower hobbies club member I would also get $30.00 off and free shipping.
So that's 1 battle ready tank for $90.00 shipped.
Yes, we generally get what we pay for and the 1/24 is probably no comparison against the 1/16 but when it is 1/4 the price ....
I did see some of the tamiya's you refered too and man I never realized what the cost of those things are, some for around $1000.00 .
My situation is back yard basher , need probably 2 - 4 tanks battle ready, kids running the tank, Would prefer RTR battle ready out of the box.
Panther F 09-04-2008, 03:21 PM Ah, now you didn't mention wanting an IR tank at first. Yes, it does look like for what you are looking at it would be cheaper as far as cost are concerned. But, is there a company you can turn to after the sale when a problem occurs? Too often these items lure us with the initial low savings and then when it quits, there are no parts or service to turn to.
The HL tanks are RTR's so they have a radio and receiver that come with it. Tamiya tanks are kits and would require a seperate radio system that would cost extra. Some of the new Tamiya tanks are under $700.00 with a radio bringing it up to maybe $850.00.
I'm not trying to throw a sales pitch for the link I included, I just know they have parts and know people that can fix your tank. Yes, it's a little more at first, but you'll appreciate the larger scale right away and I would contact both parties on your decision and ask them. To me, $90.00 for one tank shipped is taking a chance without knowing. I also would ask about IR availability and frequency compatibility too.

IR is cabable of 26 feet indoors and 20 feet outdoors so the description says but in looking at some reveiws and demostrations the infared made hits at 28 and 29 feet indoors and the reveiw also was sadened by the fact that in broad daylight the infared only made hits at 4-8 feet, 10 to 18 feet in mid to heavily tree shaded areas .
I did'nt find any description on the ones you describe in the link you provided, maybe you can help me out there.
The frequencies are available 27Mhz channels 1-6 which is pretty much entry level stuff but we have used many r/c cars on the frequency with not much problems.
I did notice in the HL that they describe theirs as being able to change the crystal to 7 different frequencies, I don't understand that part , Maybe a little help.
I would love for myself a soft air for BB's but with kids is the reason I would like the Infared versions.
I do believe these are through hobbico which I believe is a reputable company.
I am in no way trying to undermine your knowledge and suggestions as I am in the first few days of research in this tank world and want to cover all aspects from your experience as well as any other input or suggestions from you and others.
I'm open minded and learning in the process.
Panther F 09-04-2008, 07:36 PM Oh, I didn't think you were at all. I would just ask a bunch of questions with both parties before deciding. Both have their advantages but it's great to know it all.
On the crystals, you would just put a different one in that doesn't match the one you are already playing with. Kinda like changing the channel but the same frequency.
I wasn't questioning the company being reputable at all, just what can they offer after the sale.
