View Full Version : Thinking of switching over

So I've been working on a HPI Nitro MT that's been in storage for over 5 years. I've rebuilt the .15SE original engine that it came with and can't get it to run for more than 5 seconds at idle. I brought another HPI engine off eBay, but now realize that I need new engine mounts to fit it.

So all of this work for not has got me to the point of quitting, selling it (car only), and going electric.

Now I thought about it and before I make any decisions, I decided to do the math (which I haven't done yet). I've put a lot into that truck and would hate to get rid of it, so maybe I might buy a brand new engine and fit it. But then I still have to get a new exhaust.

But if I go electric, I can just pop in the battery and go. But then, the car, battery, charger, and anything else will add up. And I know I won't get much $$ if I sell the MT.

So I got some research to do before I make any decisions...but in the mean time, does anyone have any advice, opinions, suggestions?

Biglou75; If I where you, I would check into the Swap and sell fourms to see what I could find in the way of a charger and batteries. Electric is a lot easier than Nitro, there is no doubt about it. So, check swap and sell and see what you can find. You should be able to find some pretty good deals. Good luck with your future rc endeavors.

Weigh all your options and the cost to change over.
Even with electric vehicles there is some downsides depending on whether you go NiMh/brushed motors or Lipo/brushless motors combo.
NiMh/brushed motors require a little more maintanence and care (gearing correctly, brush replacement, battery maintenance etc).
The brushless require very little maintenance - just routinely reoil bearing and watch temperature of motor to gear correctly. Lipo will require a charger that is Lipo compatible but very little maintenance.

Don't be too quick to switch, you might find the problem or replacement for what you already have. Contact HPI to see what they suggest, then if they can't be helpful or suggest a remedy then if may be the chance to switch.

Good luck in finding a solution.

Thanks for the advice. $$ is a little tight right now, so it may be a while before I do anything. Hopefully before the snow hits.
