View Full Version : Lipo track rule?
marlborochippy 08-31-2008, 02:40 AM I was looking around a lot as of late and see many tracks looking to start 21.5 lipo classes this winter. I was wondering how many tracks are going with BRL's rules of using the SMC packs exclusively? Are tracks that follow BRL rules letting people who last year bought orion 3200 still use those packs? Are any tracks going larger the 3200mah lipo backs for the 21.5 classes. I'm looking to make the plunge into lipo this year and don't want to buy a pack that I can use at track A but not at track B. I am not looking to buy more then one pack at 100 a pop since I run for fun and not to only win.
I know my question may seem region select but I am truly looking for a national view in hopes of seeing oval grow.

Andy Koback 08-31-2008, 03:04 PM Here at the Mid-West Tri-Clone, the Orion 3200, 3400 and the SMC 3200 were legalized for the 21.5 class on the indoor carpet. I believe the 17.5 class can go up to 5000 with the lipo. Everyone seems to be leaning toward the SMC 3200.
RCThunder 08-31-2008, 10:54 PM Oval tracks in Florida are allowing up to 3200 Roar approved cells... that opens the door to a few companies and choices.
ToddFalkowski 09-01-2008, 11:54 AM We're allowing the 3200 Orions, as well. Many guys already have them. We're also looking at other packs in that mAh range- for example Tekin, the 3600 Orion...
Fl Flash 09-01-2008, 12:06 PM I personaly would rather see a one battery and one motor rule for the 21.5 lipo class whatever one the track picks I dont care. Let 17.5 run open battery and motor.
Reason I say that is I raced at Rug-Ratz yesterday they ran a 100 lap A-main in 21.5. Everyone ran Novak 21.5 motors and 3200 Orion carbon batterys, after 100 laps the spread was only 3 laps, I ran more side by side laps in One race than I have all year!!! Great Racing and Lots of Fun which is why I race RC cars.
98Ron 09-01-2008, 01:02 PM Chippy, why do you want to buy more than one pack?
marlborochippy 09-01-2008, 11:57 PM i said i DON'T want more then two
Echeconnee 09-02-2008, 07:16 AM Just to chip in on what the Flash has said, I run the Rug-Ratz track and I agree that there should only be one battery and one motor in the 21.5 class. It sounds good on paper but it's gonna be tough to implement. For example, when we first started lipo we allowed the orion 3200 and the 3600, oops. Oh well then Orion discontinued the 3200 AND the 3600, ARGH!! Now SMC has a good pack out and have said they will have it the next 2 years so we legalized that battery so now we are up to 3, see where i am going with this? Everywhere I look I see tracks running more different brands of batteries and there is no difference in the performance from one pack to the next and most have not been run long enough to see how long they last. My guess is most of us will forget when we bought our last pack before we buy a new pack. I am going to leave the battery issue up to the local guys in December when we vote on rule changes for the following year, I hope they go the route the FL guys have as we are right next to each other. The Novak 21.5 motor will remain the only motor legal until Novak stops making it. RCThunder 09-02-2008, 10:50 AM The reason I like opening up to just 3200 is it allows a few companies in the mix and allows hobby shops and racers have the ability to purchase packs more easily. It seems all of them are very similiar on the track and racers will support the companies they wish too...
marlborochippy 09-02-2008, 11:44 AM Thanks guys for all your insights. this is really helping me. Kinda wondering what rules the big races are goin to run this winter
Rcthunder whats up for the birds lipo rules?

The formula of the Novak 21.5 motor and a 3200mAh lipo hardcased battery is working great-leave it alone!!!!!!!! The only thing we've done is that we've legalised the use of any BL speedo in all BL classes, not just Novak & LRP. Even though there's now more speedo choices,I suspect most are going to stick to what's already been tried & proven, like the Novaks & LRP's..

So is the SMC 3200 legal at both HobbyWold and Rug-Ratz??? Just curious I,ve cycled both my Orion 3200s and my SMC 3200, interesting results.
