Some of ya might remember the 68 raggy Camaro I completed for my buddy Les this year.
Well....gulp....here's a shot of it now. also lurking in the background is the 66 Mustang Sprint that I did several years ago.
Not much to say here except OUCH! Thankfully everyone got out safely including Edgar the hound.
Fortunately we kept good photo documentation and all receipts. Still this one really hurts...I was awfully fond of Raggity Anne.
I prefer to remember her like this.

Hilltop Raceway 08-23-2008, 11:10 PM Man that's a shame to see something like that. Luckly no one was injured as you mentioned. It's still sad to see, when you think of all the hard work put into it, and then the cars destroyed in a flash. Hopefully the insurance will cover some of the loss, although it want bring the cars back...only the memories are left. RM
Crimnick 08-23-2008, 11:19 PM
roffutt 08-23-2008, 11:24 PM I think you can buff that out? Just a scratch, right?
All joking aside.. very sad to see that happen to such a beautiful car. Glad to hear no one was injured.

Ya got a crystal ball Robbie? Thats EXACTLY what Les said. We laughed till we cried then we laughed again til we peed ourselves cuz we always make fun of that infomercial magic scratch remover schlock!. We've known each other since 5th grade. What else ya gonna do? ...
Looks like he's got his heart set on a 34 Plymouth coupe. I told him, "Sure, whatever....bring it on!"
First things gonna be a new house I rekon. ;)
WesJY 08-24-2008, 01:22 AM aawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww crap. i hate to see that.
Wes
tjd241 08-24-2008, 06:49 AM That's a heartbreaker plain and simple. nd
Big time OUCH! Man, I know the house caught fire, but do they know where it started? Did it start in the garage? That is horrible that these people lost not only their home, but some VERY nice cars. And yes, thank God that got out of that place without a loss of life!
I have two 1963 Corvettes in the garage and would hate to see that happen to them or my house!
I hope the insurance can help with the replacement of first the home and second the cars!
PD2:thumbsup:
wheelszk 08-24-2008, 07:40 AM SUCKS, glad everybody's OK
NTxSlotCars 08-24-2008, 08:56 AM I'm glad everyone was okay, but, this has a striking resemblance to the Fords and Chevys at the local drag strip when the Mopars show up!

Cmon NTX a Mopar beating a GM or Ford , I mean Everyone has there fantasies but..... LOL Sorry guy I had to tease ya. Gm and Pontiac in particular have always been my favorites but basically if they have four wheels and go Vroom I'm interested !
Bill I know the fire toasted them but is there ANY chance any of the parts are going to be salvageable for other projects ?
Glad that nobody got hurt.
SplitPoster 08-24-2008, 11:40 AM dam that hurts, not just because they were beautiful cars - some people have lots of beautiful cars- but because they meant a lot to you and your friend. It's one thing conspicuously consume at an auction or something, another entirely to choose to bring one back from the dead, (or maybe infirmed) yourselves.
On that salvage angle, there is always hope. I'll relate a story. For some reason, lots of people left cars and all kinds of stuff at or in their vulnerable homes when Hurrincane Ivan loomed (approaching with 150 sustained winds, 20+ ft surge). I won't go into the attitude of denial that hits some folks when faced with that situation, have direct experience with that. A customer/friend bought from insurance salvage a 68 Firebird Convertible that had been left in a ground level garage under a house in the Big Lagoon area of Pensacola, and flooded/beat around by Ivan . Dinged all over, interior compartment completely full of marsh grass, sand, storm debris. Looked like a planter. Pulled everything out of it. no rust to speak of as the air couldn't get to the metal inside under the layer of crap, and it hadn't been in water very long. Pulled the engine, little water in oil so he Drained and turned it over, put on a new distributor, starter and reworked the carb and it started! Ran great, tranny seemed to have stayed sealed too. Major long term restoration project, but not a bad start. He found legible papers in the glove box, and called the previous owner to get more info on the car. On the phone, he said "I think I bought your old car" The guy said, no that was impossible, his car was destroyed at his house during Ivan. He said, yes, I've got your car alright. The original owner had owned it 68, and it had been his restored show car. The guy couldn't believe somebody had it. Fire and flood are different, but I 'd like to think that some pieces and parts of that Camaro and Mustang (the engine blocks?) might live on and be just what somebody else needs to put another one back on the road.
Another long developed thought-If and when I build a shop (to go with the barn my wife wants - both will sit near the tarpaper shack we have to live it after building the other two) it will be a metal frame building with as much concrete and block as possible.
Thanks for sharing.

Sorry Bill, hope I didn't rub your fur the wrong way. Two of my best friends are diehard car buffs. Ones a Ford and the other a Chevy. I've aways been the Mopar guy. We always take shots at each other, but, the older I get the more I like any old car, van, truck, wagon. Hopefully something can be salvaged. Sorry, I didn't mean to be so insensitive. Next time I'll let up a little bit at the end of the track.
Rich :(
bumpercar88 08-24-2008, 12:36 PM That is SAD! My condolences on your loss.

I was thinking the same thing about the salvage. I know that fire really tears 'em up but if any period correct parts could be salvaged that would be great. Some of my best parts for my 70 Goat came from salvage yard cars that had been totaled
Bill Hall 08-24-2008, 12:52 PM According to the investigator it looks like it was the freezer. A scenario I am familiar with ...sorta.
Many appliances use a magnetic start AC motor. They have contact points in the end bell to disengage the start winding. This area is also where the main cooling vent is so it attracts dust bunnies fuzz and hair. As the points age they can throw a bit of spark.
Depending on the age design and maintenance the they could and do light up. I found this on my moms dryer some years back while changing the belt and the rollers. The drive motor was so full of fuzz it looked like a cave mans fire kit.
So anyway, as it is an external situation the appliance is not protected by the circuit breakers....lil dog hair, a scrap of paper that blew under the freezer when ya opened the garage door ....and poof!
In retrospect she was an ancient chest type freezer and should have been decommissioned years ago. Not trying to instigate an appliance riot but if you have appliances from the Nixon era you might wanna upgrade or at least check all your appliances....like it sez in the "destructions"!
Not really any salvageable stuff here. Hot metal...cold water from a fire house....warporama! Ya might salvage some running gear. Insurance Co owns them now anyway.
Thanx for your sympathies guys, I'll pass them on to Les or let him read over my shoulder.
BTW He lost about a 100 slot cars as well mostly tyco crap (that was for that Mopar crack Rich) sorry Wes. The bodies are scorched, warped and fubarred but all the 440's and wide pans survived.... a little stinky though. The Xtracs didnt fair so well from a cursory look... we'll see.
ScottD961 08-24-2008, 01:20 PM Bill glad that ome of the slots survived. mopar slots getting burned, ah who cares ! ( I'm teasing guys) Glad that everyone is ok and hopefully someone might be able to get ahold of the usable running gear parts. I know you said they were insured but it still is a tough Loss.

Okay, I had that coming. You gotta admit though, those 440s are tough, been through fire and rain. Any pics of the left over or damaged slots? Any thing he might want to get rid of? Kind of a fire sale(uh, please don't take that the wrong way). I've got some stuff to trade, too.
Just trying to lighten the mood a little bit.
Rich
ScottD961 08-24-2008, 01:38 PM Bill can he use any parts ?
roadrner 08-24-2008, 02:33 PM Speechless..................... rr
Bill Hall 08-24-2008, 02:36 PM Sorting through the slot stuff as time permits. Not sure what he wants to do with them.
Curiously the track sets survived rather well they were well away from the epicenter.
Boxes/artwork are scorched and sogged, but the contents are skookum! The plan was that after the Camaro was done and his last daughter left for college her basement hangout/art room would become slot car central.
He tossed the cars in a five gallon bucket and thr.ew it in the back of my truck, so we could get them cleaned up and blown off before they started to corrode. Wont be long and they will doze the lot....cars are already gone.
joez870 08-25-2008, 06:09 AM When Bill mentioned this disaster in chat last time, I misunderstood! I thought the cars were OK!:freak:
Losing your home and your 1:1 & HO cars too?!
That is like losing EVERYTHING!
Bless him and his real good.
Geez! Something so rediculously simple or silly could cause sooo much damage and loss of property. That just totally sucks!
My parents had a unit like that and was from my childhood. When they moved I told them it was time to get rid of that unit! Heck, it was still a two prong, round power cord that ran it - NO GROUND! Thank God they got rid of it and found a unit at the local Lowe's for less than $300!
I wish Les and his family the best of luck in picking up the pieces of what is left of their property and possessions and hope that between family and friends some of those items can be restored as they will always carry memories that they want to recall.
PD2:thumbsup:
noddaz 08-25-2008, 06:52 AM But I am really sorry to see something like this happen. I am glad that no one was hurt.
Hopefully there was no fight with the insurance company over values of cars and items that cannot be replaced.
Scott
win43 08-25-2008, 03:58 PM :( Dang,,, Sorry to see that purty Camaro looking like that. Tell Les i'm sorry.....but am glad everyone is OK.
satellite1 08-25-2008, 04:48 PM  bad story
Slott V 08-25-2008, 05:30 PM Man that is hard to look at. Almost as shocking as seeing a burned body to me since I own a restored '67 Camaro. :drunk: I had a small electrical fire in under the hood once and now I carry a fire bottle in the car. That scene reminds me of a Corvette shop my friend owned years ago that burned to the ground. A mechanic cut a rubber fuel line underneath and the cold gas hit a hot trouble light on the ground and burst the bulb and ignited. A full tank of gas continued to feed the fire and it got out of control in seconds, burning the shop and all the vintage Corvettes to the ground. It was horrible to look at but my friend got out with only minor burns.
Word to the wise: ALWAYS use a lot of caution using trouble lights around gas and oil. A dropped light in used motor oil can also cause a very bad fire that most home owners aren't capable of extinguishing.
Also anyone with an old muscle car should have an insurance clause for fire and theft, appraised to the current collector's market value. ;)
You guys need to go to a Good Guys car show for a whole weekend just to get your minds set straight. Cars, cars, cars & more cars!
Hey Bob- heading to the Good Guys Show at Route 66 next month! A couple of buddies went to Ohio Good Guys for the SMOY contest. Some bad-ass stuff there. Great shows!
videojimmy 08-25-2008, 05:41 PM VERY bad story.
I've been a bit of a fire-phobe ever since I was a kid and watched my friend's house burn down.... everyone died except the rat bastard who was watching the kids... as he ran out as the fire started. It was a Sunday night in 1971, I was watching a Jacque Coustaeu (sp) special on Penquins when my parents and the next door neighbors came running in and opened the shade... the fire was directly across the street.
The guy was a drunk who was dating my friend's mom. She was at work and he was watching the kids. He gets loaded, decides he wants a steak.... tosses one on the broiler pan and passes out. He wakes up a little later to a kitchen on fire and runs out the front door.... he doesn't even wake the kids, let alone goes to get them!
6 kids... from 7 months old to 13 yrs old, including my friend, Kevin McQuire who was 7.... died that night.... all huddled in a corner in the oldest's bedroom. My dad, who was a cop, had a VHF radio and I'll never forget hearing the discription over the radio as the firemen discovered the bodies. I also remember seeing Kevin's mom collapse in the street as she came home and saw what had transpired. I had been there just a few hours earlier playing with SSP's in the basement
The next day, WABC news is there to cover the story. I assume the guy was arrested.. At school the next day, they hustled all us first graders into a room and gave us some story about Kevin going to heaven... naturally, me being me... provided all the gory details, which REALLY upset my teacher.
That incident put the zap on my head probably until High School.
My parents were both smokers and for years, I couldn't fall asleep until after they went to bed... then I would get up and to make sure their cigerettes were put out.
Les, God bless and thank God no one was hurt.
Things can always be replaced, people can't be.
