View Full Version : How to clean up Speedo?
JustaG3 08-11-2008, 10:14 AM Have a Novak GTB speedo,, where the wires get soldered to the speedo, I have solder that has run over on the next wires hole port, meaning I have 2 hole ports connected, by solder,, and I know that this is not a good thing,,, how do get these cleaned up??
Do I un solder every wire and lightly sand this area so that these hole ports are not connected? Or what's the trick besides not using so much solder. I'm sure I'm not the first to experience this issue! Thanks for any help.
nutz4rc 08-11-2008, 10:41 AM Radio Shack has a kit to unsolder and remove solder. You may try that. You can also heat the solder and very carefully with a tooth pick drag the solder off between the connection points. Good luck.
ta_man 08-11-2008, 11:06 AM Remove (unsolder) all the wires.
Get some "solder wick" and use that to (carefully, without overheating the board) remove the excess solder. "Solder wick" is very fine copper wire woven into a braid. I always flux the solder wick when I use it. You place the wick over the solder you want to remove and heat it with your iron. When the solder melts, it "wicks" into the briad. If you didn't get it all off, cut off the end of the braid filled with solder and try again.
Sorry to say this, but if your soldering skills are such that you overdid it to begin with, maybe you should get help with this so you don't destroy your speed control. With proper tinning of the wires, you should not need to add that much solder when attaching wires to the GTB board and would not have this problem.
JustaG3 08-11-2008, 01:33 PM Thanks guys for the help, much much thankful,, TAMan,,, the speedo was used, and I should've took notice of this excess solder, did'nt think it was going to be a problem till after the fact,,, and yes I do TIN the wires always,,, thanks again for all your help. Will let you know how it goes!
trailranger 08-12-2008, 05:17 PM A sucktion bulb/solder vac does wonders on those larger holes for wires. Most of the time I just flow the solder and blow really hard and the solder comes off. I use wick for the smaller jobs.

Good tip!
