What's the best chassis for a flat carpet oval, slider or solid? Also what's the difference between Leading Edge / L4 / Maverick / Silva / RIP / IRS?

I have a Silva, L4 and a Maverick 05.5 now and I've seen great cars for sale on the for sale thread but I've never raced flat oval before and just don't know the difference. Most of the racers at the track I'm going to be racing at are using LE hangman chassis with some silva chassis. I just want to get opinions on the differences.

Thanks,
Bill

I'm a little biased of course, but I think the Stryker works awesome on the rug :D

I like the hangman too. I also own a customworks aggressor. Both are very good cars.

All of them will work. If you are racing at Rosewood you will have support for just about everything. Jesse Bean I will be running a KSG and I have a L4, Seven will be running the Stryker, Greg Honeycutt will be running the L4, Richie Mac will be running the Silva. I know a lot of the 17.5 guys are running the Leading Edge. The only ones I havent seen are the IRS, Darkside, and Maverick, but I have driven most of them, and if you choose one of them we can get you going.

This type of question is kind of a loaded one, because people will pimp every chassis out there. Like I said if you are racing at Rosewood, or really any other track we as an oval community will get you around the track.

Hey Bill,

The Leading Edge Hangman would be an excellent choice. It would be a perfect conversion kit for your Silva or L4.

If most people at your local track are using the Hangman, that makes it an even better choice, as you have more people that you can ask for help. Leading Edge also has a great thread on hobby talk, and you can get lots of help from a great group of racers!

If you choose the Hangman, check out Lefthander-RC. Hays & Hays Jr are great to deal with, and they got anything you need for oval racing!

Joel,

Thanks, the last oval racing I did was two years ago at sandhills so I really appreciate the help. I sort of knew the question was going to be a bit loaded. I've been out of the hobby for two years so I wanted to get a lot of options.

One thing that I'm curious about is the slider verses solid chassis and what difference that makes on a flat oval.

The IRS car does look awesome, is the front end much different from the associated? What about tuning for a rookie?

The upper A arms and caster blocks are a little different then the stock Associated arms. The car is very user friendly. Here a pic of the front end.

If you got moey to burn-ProBuilt HD Pro-3 is awesome, I just got one and I can't say anything bad about it. LE Hangman also a good car, I ran one this year and it was a great car also.

I really dont have an answer for this with lipo now. Can someone explaine the pro's and cons to a slider and solid in 4 cell and lipo?

The main difference in a slider and a solid is the flex in the chassis. The slider versions of cars tend to be stiffer because of the battery tray bar that holds the battery tray to the main chassis. Solid chassis would have a little more flex. Depending on what brand you go with, your best bet is to get a solid chassis for carpet with the exception of an HD then go with a slider. LE makes a LIPO specific chassis and most new cars coming out like the KSG G3 will be set for LIPO.

With all due respect, in my experience, most sliders have more flex than solids.
Sliders allow for more adjustment. You can shift the weight forward/back.
Solids don't have this option but they tend to be slightly lighter due to less hardware and carbon fiber.

I've seen a guy come back and do well with a L2O chassis running against newer chassis brands. Sometimes the additional built in tuning adjustments can be a aid or hinderance. Usually it's a personal preference on using a slider or solid chassis or what's new today that does well at the local track.
I start with a AE chassis, upgrading parts to make it handle better or when I raced at different tracks more often had a special chassis built and setup for that specific track. At my local track I run the Silva X FActor 4, with a Leading Edge Executioner and Hangman for the new season. Depends on which one comes out handling and running better.
