View Full Version : What About a Cobra?
harristotle 08-07-2008, 07:42 PM I am new to the forum, but I wanted to see if anyone else was thinking the same thing I am...
I would love to see Greenlight make a Shelby Cobra, 289 or 427.. doesn't matter. Yes HW, and SC have pretty good 1/64 cobras, but GL is a different company with different characteristics.
It wouldnt be hard to fit a cobra into the existing Barrett Jackson and Muscle Car Garage lineup, and just from watching the price of quality 1/64 cobras on ebay I would have to imagine the demand exists.
Would love to hear some other peoples thoughts... thanks!
rattlehed 08-07-2008, 08:01 PM welcome! Cool screen name. I'm sure they'll get around to it. It seems GL is going for the castings not burnt up by all of the other diecast makers first. Their line IS limited Now but hang in there, the lineup WILL expand to include all of the greats and I'm sure they will be nice!
fuddmiester 08-07-2008, 08:59 PM '71-'73 Stang hasn't been overdone yet, how about a '65-'66 2+2, maybe a Cobra Daytone Coupe?!

Thank you for the welcome! I guess you're right, patience is the key.

The 65-66 2+2 is one of my favorite stangs, but I think rattlehed is right in them using the less common cars first. A Daytona Coupe would be great, there are very few high quality Coupes around. I would also love to see a 89-95 Thunderbird Supercoupe that is a little known muscle car that I have yet to see a 1/64 of. Maybe even a Grand National and a Mustang Fox to add to that. Thanks guys!
rattlehed 08-08-2008, 06:24 AM Think about this as well. When a new cast is made it costs money. That money has to be fully recouped before a profit is realized. Companies LIKE profit and if not for it they go out of business. So for a small company like GL it makes sense to produce castings you can get multiple uses out of. For example a 68-69 roadrunner cast only has minor differences from year to year. A 68-69 roadrunner can also be changed to a GTX w/relative ease, a simple grill, taillight, marker light cahnge is all that's needed. This rule applies to 68-69 chevelles,67-68 stangs,69-70 stangs, 68-70 chargers and the list goeson of castings that with MINOR changes become a different year or model altogether. As far as the Daytona coupe goes, JL has released that car in numerous series, strike one, that cast doesn't have much use as anything else, strike two. The Cobra, while it IS beautiful has a limited lifespan as well as being done by EVERYONE else already. I'm not saying that GL shouldn't do them but I do believe it will be a while before we see it on a shelf.
fuddmiester 08-08-2008, 07:46 AM How about some old Can-Am cars....Lolas, Chapparals, Ferrais, McLarens...... maybe even a "Historic Racing series".... six wheel tyrel ELFs, BRM, Hondas..... Man I'd sell my currnet collection for a fresh batch of old racing stuff!

+1000   :woohoo:
tamiyatim 08-08-2008, 10:17 AM I would LOVE to see GL put some minilites on those cudas, camaros and boss stangs... make some 70's trans am cars... they have the paint jobs down, we just need to see the rims!!! Cant wait till they come out with a 70 challenger...

In order to make Ferraris, Mclarens, Ect., GL would have to obtain a licence aggrement. Since hotwheels already has Ferrari, i doubt GL would be able to make them
I'm still waiting for someone to do a MKIV Toyota Supra in 1/64. Tomica has one but looks to fake.
berschneider06 08-08-2008, 06:28 PM 03-04 COBRA would be lovely also!! There are some true beasts here in pittsburgh!!
wannafbody 08-09-2008, 05:25 PM Greenlight can make about any casting they'd like. They can arrange a licensing agreement with RC to use JL castings. After all, it doesn't look like JL is planning on using them this year.
tamiyatim 09-12-2008, 04:21 PM In that case, I'd rather see the Greenlight 69 charger in General Lee attire... with correct rims!! I bet Greenlight would do a much better job than JL with it... I also see they're working on a legit 67-69 chevy... Cooter's tow truck, anyone??
JasonZ 09-12-2008, 09:32 PM If Gl has Ferraris, Ill go nuts..

As a Shelby guy it would be sacrilegious to have any sizeable Ferrari presence in my collection lol but it would be really cool to have some quality, affordable 1/64 Ferrari's.
CTWLSMIKE 09-12-2008, 10:47 PM Unfortunately Mattel seems to have an exclusive license to do Ferraris. They do make some nice ones, but it'd be nice to see some JL or GL efforts.
As for Shelby, I hope the Cobras are coming to GL. On the 427 SC, the HW version was awesome but the JL version left something to be desired.
The Daytona, the HWs version put out recently is a bit big to scale. It looked great in the Adult Collectible versions, but so far to me the mainline version isn't right.
The JL version is awesome but I would have liked it to be just a tad bigger. Still the best 1/64 version of the casting out there is the JL version right now.
Atencio 09-13-2008, 07:52 PM I wish Mattel would do more with their Ferrari license. Their 100% Enzo is on par with Kyosho kit Ferraris so they do make nice cars.
As far as Cobra's I doubt Greenlight could make one that is any better than Shelby Diecast or High Speeds so would rather see their talent pointed in another direction. I would rather see them make a Daytona even better some GT40's in the various configurations.

BLASPHEMY!!! Even with the options out there, the Cobra is one of the most popular collector castings out there and it is worthy of a Greenlight effort. I would love to see what they could do with it.
Atencio 09-14-2008, 03:59 AM I am sure GL could make a fine Cobra. Part of GL's charm though has been that they made cars that were not overly represented in the diecast market. The Cobra is probably one of the most overly represented diecast cars with the Shelby, High Speed, and even 100% HW making very nice castings. Now who makes a nice GT40 Mark IV?
