It cost the same to build an electric 1/8th as it does to build a quality nitro 1/8th.

This is an incredible emerging class in RC.
At the same weight as a Nitro 1/8th scale and about the same investment you get a vehicle that is faster with more low end torque than comparable Nitro vehicles. Depending on the electronics you use, you can up to 15 min or more in race conditions. The jumping is incredible. The speed... beyond compare.
In the March issue of RC Car magazine, they tested a sponsored Mugen drivers Nitro vehicle against an Electrice coversion with a Neu 1512 1.5D/F motor. The Nitro 0-40 Mph was 5.38 seconds. The Electric 0-40 mph... 2.06 seconds.
Check out the many videos on You tube.
Feel free to ask any questions.

OK, Here's my question: How do you get them to be the same weight as a nitro?

Doug (badassrevo) said his 8ight buggy was 7 pounds 10 ounces RTR. I weighed mine (and took it to the Post Office just to get a "second opinion" on the weight) and it was 8 pounds 5.6 ounces. That was with a MaxAmps 6000 4S pack. I know that battery is regarded as a little heavy, but it weighs 20 ounces. How does Doug's car get to be 11.6 ounces less? (I asked but he kind of ignored followup questions.) Is he running an 8.4 ounce battery?

Note: I'm using a battery tray I made myself to replace the 1st generation RCPD tray. My tray and the 1st gen RCPD tray (which I still have) both come in at about 5 ounces. So I haven't added 11.6 ounces in the battery tray.

Seriously, both cars have Neu 1512 motors, Mamba Maxes, and the same basic chassis and RCPD motor mount. Yes, I have a RC-Monster rear endbell cover and am using 5.5MM bullets on the motor instead of direct solder, but I can't see how that accounts for 11 ounces. Can you give me any advice on tracking down the extra weight?

The new RCPD battery trays are lightened underneath. Usually 1-2 ounces.
Not sure how Doug is measuring his buggy.
8.5 is not bad.

Looks like Doug has no additional aluminum chassis upgrades. Does your truck have any?

I just weighed my 8t electric conversion with 5S pack race ready + some dirt and it was 9.5 lbs. I only have the aluminum chassis braces. Ooopsss... you guys are talking Buggies. Sorry.

The weight on my car was taken at CRCRC with Panther slicks on it. I have never weighed it other than CRCRC electric champs race.

They have been lightened by 1-2 ounces or weigh 1-2 ounces? (Wow!) I can probably take another ounce off mine with some more machining.
Good to know that 8.5 is in the ballpark.

Mine's a buggy. The only aluminum is the chassis, the RCPD motor mount and the top plate/ESC mount, and a .080 front motor cover the same diameter as the motor.

Guys who have the nitro 8ights say my buggy feels like the weight of a truggy (a subjective measure to be sure).

Can you tell me how much a set of mounted slicks weighs (or even just one) so I can weigh my tires for comparison?

BA....REVO i weighed a couple of my local buddies 1/8 cars that also weighed them at the crcrc race. both were losi 8ights and they also weighed about 7lbs 10 oz on their scales.
i couldnt believe how light they supposidly were so i weighed them with my digital fish scale that is accurate within 10 gms. they both weighed in at between 8.05 and 8.1 lbs track ready. this scale has been tested against my other dietary scale and my local post office scales and has been found to be very accurate.
i would be very interested to know what your track ready buggy would weigh at your local post office. they will weigh it for you no problem. please post back your results if you do so.

electric 8th scale is awsome, i ran at MX131 2 weekends ago, and passed the best nitro guy (kia goff) down the straight like he was standing still. i finished 3rd behind Dooda, only because someone (Dave Washburn) told me it was a 30 min main, but was only 20. so i dumped at the 13 min mark, had to be scooped up, swapped a batt, and ran really hard for the last 5 minutes. if ide known it was a 20 min main, i might have either won or gotten second.

electric 1/8, its the wave of the future, MARK MY WORDS!!!!!!

Nice that there is options for those wanting to start new. AND for those who already have their favorite buggy and just want a change or circumstance at the track have changed so that they can't run Nitro any more.

Any input on the MEDusa 36-60-2000 or the 36-50-2200 either on 4s.

Seems like the 2200 is a higher KV with less amp draw (90 for the 2200 vs 105 for the 2000)

I was reading on RC tech and I found a little info on the Med motors someone said the 50mm was plenty of motor (torque wise). I know most of the time you get what you pay for but a $129 for the MEDusa motor it is alomost too good to pass up....if the duribliity is there.

Oh, anyone know the release data on the v3 MMM?

Start readin' (http://www.rctech.net/forum/electric-off-road/158327-electric-1-8th-scale-conversion-kits.html)!!!! :):):)

Seriously though, Doug would be your best bet for info. I was talking ho him up in Ashtabula last week and he said he was running a NEU 1515 ? in his truck Mambe Monster Max ESC maybe wait until v3 is released (although Doug has not had any issues with his MMM).

For batteries he told me about a good inexpenssive pack to run indoors (and practice/quals out) but I cannot remeber the name (maybe the zippy packs?)

I am looking into the MEDusa (http://www.medusaproducts.com/Motors/036-V2.htm) motors as they seem to be getting good reviews (the couple that I found) and they are a lot cheaper! But if Doug tells me to stay away I will!!!

Good luck!!!!

The Medusa motors run good. Just a little more heat than the Neu. Well worth the money. They will not fit the new Losi motor mount. The Zippy R packs are very good too.

Steve,
you have two choices, clutch and brakes or just a motor like a normal electric car?

check out www.rcproductdesigns.com or www.teknorc.com and www.rc-monster.com

I would recomend the Neu 1515/1y in a truggy with the Castle Monster Mamba

The front bearing is to large. The mounting face of the Medusa is not flat, the bearing protrudes out and is too big to fit in the mount.

I am thinking the Zippy-R but in 5s and a 2000 or maybe a 2200 K/V motor. I alos plan to make my own battery tray out of Delrin like the pro tray for the 8ight.

Delrin is pretty cheap and I can machine it so what the heck! I am also toying with the idea of smaller saddle packs but that would require another charger so I thinking I will go with the single battery. The 808 has the motor shoved way over to the side like the Losi so I should ahve good balance.
