View Full Version : ELECTRIC 1/8th SCALE
DJ1978 02-03-2009, 01:06 PM I believe we haven't seen the last of the updates for the 1/8 ESC & Motor combos from different companies. It might be 6 months from now before the get the ESC's tuned in to handle the horsepower. I recently had to update both the (firmware & the software) for both the Mamba & Losi Combo's - YES, pain in the but, even with customer service help but it is the latest and should be updated to keep everything running cool/r.
Just FYI, looks like we'll have (8) electric eights running this Wednesday night at BFG so anyone interested in running yours indoor - check it out. First class you run is $16.00, second class is only $5.00 more some bring the 1/10 truck or 2wd or 4wd buggy out also.
Peace all,
HEFFAE
I have to agree with you. The ESC technology is just starting to catch up with the rest of the development. The motors are pretty much set with NEU as the gold standard. The LOSI ESC and Castle are there.. but WAY too big. Tekin is about to release their RX8. And who else is working on an ESC design is anyones guess. I am sure that all companies will continue to refine their ESC's. Batteries are there too.. but I can only see them being refined more and more also.
We are experiencing great interest in Electric 1/8th scales at Washtenaw RC Raceway in Ann Arbor. Two full heats of 1/8th scale buggies and a heat of Truggies.
Come and join the fun!!! Next race is this Saturday, February 7th.
Dan
ta_man 02-03-2009, 11:21 PM Question about the MMM Combo motors, they are made by NEU, are these motors the same quality as the motors bought directly from NEU and are they as efficient. If one were to just want to buy the MMM ESC then what motor is close in specs to the 2650 in the Combo?
The Castle motors are not made by Neu. It is my understanding that they are made to a design licensed from Neu.
[Castle does sell Neu motos, but they are the black ones, and not the ones included in the combos with the MMM.]
3171scott 02-05-2009, 09:15 AM Hello All,
First time posting here, and I have a qusetion. I just purchased a RC8 roller and the RC Products Des. conversion and plan on purchasing a Momba Monster combo.
I plan on racing on a indoor high bite clay track and possibley a few bigger out door tracks.
My question is, do I go with the 2200 or the 2650 KV's.? I do not plan on running a 5 cell, just a 4 cell.
I just read a Mag. review on them and they said that the 2200 is for monster trucks, and is a little bigger, and harder to fit in a buggy. Do you feel the same, is this true?
Thanks scott.
badassrevo 02-05-2009, 06:52 PM You can run either one. the 2200 is longer and heavier, but you will have slightly better run time. The 2650 will be faster. The 220 can be used in either a buggy or a truggy if you get a truggy later on. the 2650 is a buggy only motor.
You can't go wrong with either.
DJ1978 02-05-2009, 07:26 PM Just got off the phone with NEU. If anyone had been dealing directly with them like I have been... you know their previous girl at the desk was quite disorganized... She is no longer with them. The new girl taking care of orders and accounts is Odette and she seems to be very well organized and putting things back in order.
SO... I will now say if you want a NEU motor, you can order them thru me again. I was sort of backing off before because of how messed up their system was.
Dan
3171scott 02-06-2009, 09:57 AM Thanks BARevo, i think I will order the 2650. I do not plan on getting a truggy, I like the looks of the Buggy's. A 4s is the right batt. configutation for the 2650, correct?
Thanks again and i will keep everyone posted on my build.
Scotrt.
badassrevo 02-06-2009, 01:24 PM Yes, 4s is perfect. You can get a good deal here
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6351&Product_Name=ZIPPY-H_5000mAh_4S1P_20-30C_Lipoly_Pack
and here

The first choice has been proven to be a good battery. the second one is new and has not been tested yet.
3171scott 02-06-2009, 01:53 PM Thanks, will look in to this.
Scott.
kmberie 02-08-2009, 12:44 AM Hey Doug does that Zippy 4s pack fit into most Electric conversion kits trays?
badassrevo 02-08-2009, 09:58 AM The first zippy fits in all the long tray kits. it you are running the Associated kit I would try the 2nd link. It should work well.
badassrevo 02-08-2009, 11:53 AM Check it out Kevin,
Here are pics of a RC8 with the Associated conversion and the Castle 2650 combo and the Zippy FlightMax 4s 5000.
Looks perfect!
http://s717.photobucket.com/albums/ww177/trout74/
I would go with the 2200 for the longer run time.
badassrevo 02-08-2009, 11:57 AM If you want the best of the best, get the AE conversion kit, the Zippy battery and the Tekno Neu 1512/2.5d and the Castle Monster Max
http://www.impaktrc.com/product_info.php?cPath=186_292&products_id=3729
kmberie 02-08-2009, 08:14 PM That battery is ridiculously inexpensive.... That Tekno version of the Neu would even be more efficient wouldn't it be?
I think we are getting closer, I might be willing to gamble on those batteries too since they are so cheap...

Well I have the RC8, the AE conversion kit will be here Wednesday, I like that Tekno Neu motor. Decisions decisions...
I want to thank all you guys for your input! Doug hope to see you at oakhill or have fun this summer.
badassrevo 02-08-2009, 09:41 PM The Zippy packs are great. I will see you at Oak hill this summer.
Yes the Tekno Neu will be more efficient than the Castle.
badassrevo 02-08-2009, 09:46 PM Plus it matches the Associated blue color scheme.
badassrevo 02-08-2009, 09:59 PM I will be running my Caster EX1R PRO check it out at www.casterracingusa.com

What gearing do u recommend for the MMM and 2200 in an RC8. I want to be on the conservitive side because of temps and runtimes. Plus Im sure it will still have plenty of power! Thanks

How many cells are you planning on using?
With 4s I would start with 17/46 maybe an 18.

BUDDY... You are killing me here!!! LOL!!
DJ1978 02-14-2009, 10:58 PM There are many options available on the market today. The BIG companies have an advantage over little guys like RC Product Designs and RC Monster. We will continue to offer you high quality parts made right here in America at the best prices we can, all the while encouraging you to explore this great new class in the hobby.

I looked at your site, but no conversion shown for the Xray 808. Do you have one in the works?

Not yet.... I am in the process of moving to a temporary location and then on to a new permanent location in the summer that will allow my company to grow.

hankster 02-20-2009, 12:36 AM They won't be available until the end of the month.... hopefully.
Uncle E 02-20-2009, 10:04 PM hank you getting one? The sensored deal is attractive. The cogging blows on the Losi. If I can't get that dialed out, I'm getting a tekin.
hankster 02-20-2009, 11:05 PM Got my name one of the ESCs already, the motors won't be available till later. I'm not really having problems with cogging with the Losi, just like Tekin products.
badassrevo 02-22-2009, 09:34 AM No cogging with the Castle Nue either.
HEFFAE 02-23-2009, 12:21 AM E's cogging is fixed with his Excelorin, we just had to kick him out of the country for a month so we could get our hands on his 1/8. We found the problem to be E was reading the manual to one of his electric dump trucks, motor purrrrr's now. E, you own me a HEFFAE beer or take plenty of topless photos for me, weight limit = 135<
HEFFAE 02-23-2009, 12:31 AM Hey, just a quick blurb regarding a couple tracks we ran with the 1/8's in the last week.
FTR (Factory Tracks) up near Brighton, MI (highland I thnk) was great last Wednesday, 8 in the 1/8 E class which is great numbers for a Wednesday. Track was perfect with wide lanes, a group of us are planning on heading over again this Wednesday. Owner Al Horne was very friendly & great group of racers = my vote:thumbsup:
Then we went to Washtenaw for the Saturday race, long day, very good racing, tons of classes; slash (3 heats), 1/10 mod (3 heats) and 1/8E (2 heats) were the most popular. Another great owner (Dan) and crew who kept the schedule rolling along = my vote:thumbsup:
Only mistake we made for both trips was we forgot to pack the cooler with beer for the long drive home, we won't make this mistake on our 3rd try.
DJ1978 02-23-2009, 04:12 PM Enjoyed having you guys from Grand Rapids there on Saturday Heffae. Hope you can make it again for the last races.
We had 164 entries on Saturday. Great racing in all classes!!!
Just two races left.
Dan
HEFFAE 02-24-2009, 02:29 PM Thanks Dan, I threw up a question on your forum but I'll post it here, I'm looking for the person who had the pop-up canopy (can't remember the name on it) but nobody was in it the whole day, it was located next to the food trailer. I am looking to get in touch with that person who normaly is there, apparently he does some rc painting, thanks.

Both of those guys Rusty and Dave don't do painting that I know of for folks. Paintmonster does a very good job. Go to his web page to check out some of the work.
Both Terrel and Greg had PM paint jobs on their buggies and truggies in the 1/8th classes.
HEFFAE 03-01-2009, 12:58 AM Very good, thanks

I hope I can join you guys for some 8th scale racing soon... I just got done with my conversion... I can't make the last race at Washtenaw, so I guess I'll be going to Al's before the FTR starts, as soon as I'm done with test and tune at the local track... Here are some pics of my 777 :

Is anybody running a 777 electric? What gearing are you guys using? I am starting with a 12T pinion / 46 spur, but I am guessing I can prolly go up to 14T?
I'll take any advice...
Thanks
Mike

If anyone is interested please pm me, so I can get with this fella on the intrest in this class.
He also mentioned something about the nitro guys too.

BIG jumps, technical track and some good speed... and I will be there for sure...:thumbsup::thumbsup:
honda_stuntboy 03-18-2009, 12:23 PM Just ordered up my Mamba Max combo. Couldn't afford the Neu motor for now, but if the Mamba motor gives out I'll look into it. Ordered the Castle / Neu 2650Kv combo for my RC8. Ebay had a 10% off sale yesterday and I got it shipped for $233 brand new. Not too bad!!! Terry.
Heatseeker 04-12-2009, 03:13 PM How you guys rate this combo for a 1/8 buggy, Tekin RX8 Red Line (http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_221_911/products_id/36899). If I convert my buggy I plan on getting close to, if not, the best for it.

The Tekin system has been in development for quite a while. We have been working closely with them providing data from our races with all the other systems we have been using as we develop the class.
They have worked hard and done a TON of race condition testing with several vehicles to work out all the bugs.
The Tekin system will definitely be worth the wait. They have taken into consideration all our concerns and comments in their development.
I am looking forward to getting my systems from them soon.
