I'm working on an old honda and I suspect the coil is bad. I get no spark even after disconnecting the kill switch connection to the coil (with a new plug as well).

A new coil is $80 and I would hate it if i diagnosed it wrong. Is there a quick way to check if the coil is still ok or not?

Stick a screwdriver in the plug socket, hold the metal part of the screwdriver and crank the engine, if you get a jolt you have spark, if not you don't. Have a good one. Geo

If the gap is right, and still no spark, (after trying more than one plug), coil is probably bad. $80 is a overestimate.

can you recommend a place to buy such parts?

Be sure to test for spark with the kill switch lead unplugged from the ignition module. You may also want to remove the coil and clean the contact areas where it mounts to insure a good electrical ground to the engine block. If you still have no spark, the a new module may be needed, and yes they run around $80.00 for a new one. You can order them on the web from Jacks Small Engines or Plano Power
