Matchbox 2009 Report!
Well, Rt 66/MCCH/Mattel presents The 6th Annual Matchbox Collector’s Community Hall International Gathering of Friends Event in Albuquerque, New Mexico is behind us and what a fun time that was had by all who attended.
The brand has experienced massive growth in retail special allotments thus in return allowing for more recent stock to be seen. Matchbox Toys International, Inc. continues to see multifold growth in just about every single segment the brand is in. Mattel, Inc. is more supportive of the line now than ever before. The 2009 line is pretty well finalized as the Team is waiting on a few key liscences to come back, 2010 is already being worked on and being planned as we speak. Matchbox continues to remain the Fastest Growing Brand In Mattel.

The points Matchbox will continue to grow upon is the following :
1. Remain true to the core position and not stray from that point.
2. Continue to grow and expand on the 1-100/1-75 Core Line.
3. Reinvent all playsets to avoid them from becoming stale and unappealing.
4. Expand upon the “Point Of Sale” aspect that enables them to make the best models to the best of their ability.
5. Remain true to the anniversary segments by never forgetting the past history of the brand.
I know ya’ll have been waiting with baited breathe what is in store for Matchbox 2009, without further adieu here is the report on Matchbox 2009 :
1-100 Core Line.
21 models were revealed, 18 brand new tools and 3 retools of current models. 9 are from the Real Segment, 7 are from the Action segment, 5 are from the Adventure Segment. The new tools will breakdown into 16 liscences and 6 generics. As per request from The Matchbox Team all new tools are classified as most liscences still have yet to come back fully. Expect list around the November/December 2008 Timeframe. The only tool already known is the replacement for the aging MB138 Jaguar XK120 Roadster. The 1948 Jaguar XK140 MC Coupe.
There are 2 new wheels planned for the Core Line for 2009, a new utililty wheel and the classic hub cap pattern that debuts on the 08 MCCH Gathering Dinner VW.
MB700 1963 Cadillac Hearse will no longer appear in the European Markets over a complaint.
There is a new lightbar that looks more accurate that most anything in recent years that is planned to debut on MB751 Subaru Impreza Police. There is a surfboard roof attachment that is being worked on as well as an advertising banner that is commonly seen on most metropolitan taxicabs as there are quite a few models that have holes on the roof and by using it as a police model time and time again seems to make a model stale or unappealing. This is to keep everything fresh and new.

2009 SuperFast Series –
The 40th Anniversary of The SuperFast range in 2009 is being commemorated with a special box with 2008 new tools debuting in SF09, a new commemorative box w the new 40th Anniversary logo on the side will hit stores early part of 2009. There will be a mail in promotion, a little sheet of paper will be included with every model. Collect the entire set, mail it in with some postage to cover shipping and a special model will show up at your door. Tools include GT500, Morgan, Citroen DS, Lotus Evora.
Mattel realizes that there is nothing that can be done over the lack of new SuperFast in most regional markets as once sold off, it is out of Mattel’s hands.
Dinky –
Brand licensed to Atlas/Norev in France for a France only collector magazine program. All models replicas of original castings :
Renault Dauphine – Citroen 2CV6 – Citroen Model H – 1948 Buick Roadmaster – Simca Chambord – Peugeot 403 – 1962 VW Beetle 1200 – Panhard.
Stars Of Cars –
This European exclusive line has been renamed as Euro Edition. This line will continue.
MCI E4500 –
The Walt Disney World Corporation/Go Network has the exclusive worldwide rights to use this and will not unfortunately be seen in any other segment or range.
Convoys-
This range of commercial trucks will see 2 new liscenced cabs and at least 4 new trailers. A “True 1/64” range of models is being planned as it has been determined that the current range doesn’t really fit in to the scale of the Core Line. A flatbed, a 6 car transporter, a pipe transporter, a cable spool transporter are all being planned.
“The new” range, I’m affectionately referring to it as “Convoy Junior”, not the actual name for the range. –
Execution for this range will rewrite what a model commercial truck range will be all about. Done in part to combat recent criticism of the brand over how cheap models like MB690 Cement Mixer looks. Expected Spring 2009. Rig collector’s need not worry as you will love what is coming up.
Skybusters -
This aviation themed range of planes, helicopters and general aircraft will see the release of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner before the end of 2008. There will be an exclusive airport style playset to enjoy launching Spring 2009.
Playsets –
PopUp Playsets –
This successful, interconnectable, foldable sets will be expanded upon in 2009. Fall 2008 debuts the Haunted House Set where the newly redone MB746 Chevy Sedan Delivery will be the exclusive model to the set. The goal is to get out of the house before being caught by the entities that lie in wait.
The Croc Crossing set planned to hit Spring 2009 will feature MB732 Badlander tool as it’s exclusive model. The trick is to get the treasure before a Rock Python eats you. There are no current plans to make the Badlander available in the Core Line.
Mega Rig Series Playsets –
This range of multi interconnectable range that you can make up to 40 unique vehicles using one giant piece will see a Space Shuttle mission where you would have to defeat an alien. Mattel attempted to seek a liscence fm The United States National Aeronautics & Space Administration but could not secure the liscence for it as NASA citied the presence of an alien in the pack as it’s reason for not liscencing t’s name to it.
TV Heroes Liscences –
This televised cartoon line of models will continue as scheduled.
Holiday Sets —
Dino Eggs will continue as scheduled. Coal Cars will continue as scheduled. Halloween Models will continue as well.
