View Full Version : Woo Hoooo !! Maybe 60's Batman !!!
Old_McDonald 07-29-2008, 06:08 PM :woohoo:
Just read here that Adam West is working on extra DVD materials such as behind the scenes stuff for some upcoming DVD. No official announcements yet for the TV release but Adam is working on something. The link below has a lot of hype and innuendos. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Read all about it here.... http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Batman-Adam-West-Batman-Diaries/10197

If you read the whole article, they seem pretty adamant that the series is nowhere close to being released. Doesn't seem like much to get excited about...in fact, they stress that it will NOT be happening at this time, and West's project is being done on his own with NO involvement from Fox. All in all, the tone is rather discouraging if you read it all the way through.

I did say "maybe". :) Besides, with the release of the movie, Adam West's dvd and the batmobile, I think it's just a matter of time.
Capt. Krik 07-30-2008, 10:30 AM Over at the Digital Bits they are reporting that Adam's pieces are for a dvd recounting his time as Batman. They are not for a release of the 60's series. Apparently Warners and 20th Century Fox are still lightyears apart from negotiating some kind of deal for the series.
Old_McDonald 07-30-2008, 01:28 PM yeh, I heard that. I've also read in other places over the past year that negotiations are still on. People had doubts about the batmobile being released due to licensing but it made it.
It was announced that the batman movie is being re-released in blu-ray. I can't imagine that happenging if some progress hadn't been made since it's the same material. I can hope. I know from reading on the forums that the tv show is being aired on some cable channel I don't get in my locale. If the show can be aired, I can't imagine why it can't be on dvd. I just hope it is before the lawyer's fees make it too expensive.
Capt. Krik 07-30-2008, 01:43 PM The deal for the Batman movie had been worked out years earlier. It first appeared on VHS in '89 at the same time the first Tim Burton Batman was hitting the screens.
The TV series is a whole seperate deal. Both studios know there is potential for big profits from the release on DVD. Both studios want to be sure they get their fair share but neither will budge on who gets what.
No doubt it will happen one day. Just don't expect it in the near future.
flyingfrets 07-30-2008, 06:46 PM I just saw yet another re-release of the film (DVD only, not Blu-Ray) at Suncoast. New packaging (of course)...much darker in tone, maybe in keeping with the Dark Knight's current theatrical run. But on closr inspection, it's the same old stuff.
Much as I'd like to have an "official" release of the series, I'm quite content with a set I have that a buddy duped directly to disc from a set of syndication masters when he worked for one of the Philly stations several years ago (No, I'm not uncouth enough to hawk them all over the internet, though the quality is far superior to the wretched collections I've seen out there).
Unless Fox were to do a true digital remastering on the series, I can't foresee an "official" release being of appreciably better quality than what I've got, but I'd still buy a set anyway if the day ever comes.
Zorro 07-30-2008, 07:30 PM Unless Fox were to do a true digital remastering on the series, I can't foresee an "official" release being of appreciably better quality than what I've got, but I'd still buy a set anyway if the day ever comes.
The standard definition DVD movie print looks quite good. The episodes that run on The American Life Channel vary considerably in quality but all appear to be from 30 year-old 16mm syndication dupes.
flyingfrets 07-30-2008, 09:55 PM The prints I have appear to be either from a newer set of masters, or there's less signal loss in the disc transfer than there is in broadcast (no station ID in the corner either). I'd have to say the picture quality is better than TV/VHS, and very close to an average DVD.
Certainly more than watchable and definitely entertaining...
Prince of Styrene II 07-31-2008, 02:33 PM The copy I have from the first season on DVD was said to be directly from the original film reels. They even have the old ABC logo bumpers at the starting & end of each episode.
seaQuest 07-31-2008, 05:27 PM Another matter stopping up the drain is William Dozier's daughter is suing Fox over profits she says the estate is still owed dating back to the series' original syndication run.
The reason the movie is available is because the deal was cut for the movie differently than the series, and Dozier made up a "new" production company for the movie. Whereas the series was made by GreenWAY, the movie was made by GreenLAWN.
flyingfrets 07-31-2008, 09:36 PM It really is a shame they can't all get it together. The first season's production values and writing were funny, innovative and full of the double entendres that still go right over kids' heads (the "WHAM!", "POW!!!" action stuff that they go for is still pretty cool too though ;)).
It was a well done show for its time, and still holds up on many levels. It really would be nice to have an official boxed set along the lines of what was done with the LOTG boxed set. I'd go for that in a New York minute....

American Life was running the earlier episodes a few months back. You're absolutely right about the first season production values in particular. They really were bringing the comic book to life on a purely visual level and they spent the money to do it right. In those earlier episodes, there are frequent "iconic" shots of Batman that are straight out of the comic, and a lot more "shadows" and "night scenes" than in later episodes.
Old_McDonald 08-01-2008, 09:44 AM If there are lawsuits, why haven't any judges ruled on them yet?
Frak, IT's been almost a decade, let's get this greed overwith. I want a set just to see my favorite actors again.
