View Full Version : OVAL racing AT the Coliseum (Frederick,MD)
Jamie Hanson 07-21-2008, 03:51 PM This is the official announcement of the first oval race at the Coliseum Hobbytown in Frederick, MD. This track is a HIGH bite SMOOTH indoor asphalt track. Smoother than most carpet tracks.
Our first race day is going to be SUNDAY September 7th. Doors open at 9:00 with racing at 12:00.
As with most tracks, if we get enough guys to start a class, we will run it. 4 or more is normal.
I am trying to get a feel for what the most popular classes will be.
13.5
17.5
21.5 lipo
SK
Touring. . (We have a lot of touring cars around here.)
Losi sliders? Micro?
I also am trying to figure out how often people would come. Every other weekend? Once a month? Please let me know your ideas.
LETS GO RACING.
LEFT IS RIGHT AND RIGHT IS WRONG.
Bill Auchterlonie 07-21-2008, 03:55 PM I'll make the trip,,,just need to get some tires first.:hat:
gindlmi 07-21-2008, 03:59 PM aahhhh yes a sweet track closer to home. Looking forward to running there on a regular basis. 13.5 and 17.5
Da One 07-21-2008, 04:32 PM Track size, specs?
oldguy 07-21-2008, 04:52 PM And the place is "air-conditioned" too--right??
abdule 07-21-2008, 06:47 PM and the surface is sweet...........................:woohoo:
Jamie Hanson 07-21-2008, 08:06 PM We have made one change on the first race day. It has been brought to my attention that the weekend of August 24th is the same day as WillowMill. The following weekend is Labor day weekend. So the first oval race has been moved to the first weekend in September (Sunday the 7th)
I also fixed this date in my first post.
I also want to add there is an on-site hobby shop, but it will not open until 12:00.
Track opens at 9:00 and the shop at 12:00
The track is 46x100. I am going to shave 1 foot off the width so the dimensions will be 15ft straights with a 15ft center.
I am putting 15 foot open room at each corner from the tip of the ice to the outer wall.
For those that do not want to do math, it is a 70ft center line to apex to apex.
Chairs and power are all there. We do use personal transponders but also have in house for those that need them.
And yes, it is air conditioned. No rain dates for this track. The best part about indoors.
For food there is a Chinese place next door and a pizza shop across the street. There are also fast food joints around the corner.
MR-RMS 07-21-2008, 08:29 PM Address please?
TBRC1 07-21-2008, 08:38 PM JAMIE THIS IS GREAT NEWS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The only small down side is there is a oval event in New Jerserey that weekend. Just passing info not trying to shoot anything in the foot. BUT man will I pray for BAD weather that weekend.
As for classes I know some that woul like to run 4 cell stock brushed I would be in for 13.5 and/or 17.5 4 cell. I have seen 17.5 and 13.5 lipo at the Mushroom bowl and not to say it was fast. But if someone looses it they might go through the wall and out the front door of the store:rolleyes:
Finally for the scheduling of other oval days, check out Hobby town Glen Burnies sunday oval schedule so we can avoid both tracks running on the same day
Jamie Hanson 07-21-2008, 08:38 PM Here is a link to the website.
The address is.....

I know. We can not keep pushing the date back though. I checked into this a little. I know Jersey has their race that weekend, but it is on SATURDAY only. I am hoping maybe some guys will want to do a weekend Warrior deal and come race at the "C" on Sunday.
TBRC1 07-21-2008, 10:17 PM HHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMM weekend warrior ..................we'll see what the weather does. Either way I have been one of the many/few asking for oval there so I do plan on being there.
mojoman 07-22-2008, 11:42 AM Thank You Jamie for your help and info regarding the "C", if anybody can make this idea real it's you!!
We are really looking forward to this program, and having you all at the "C". I can't wait to call some oval races, and meet some of the drivers.
See you all soon!

Mr.fastman 07-29-2008, 12:03 PM Jamie - Any thought on classes, less is more.
Jamie Hanson 07-29-2008, 07:07 PM I have to agree. Less is more. I am open to suggestions on what guys want to run. 13.5 for sure. More than likely 17.5 as well.
TBRC1 07-29-2008, 08:53 PM I know a few that want to show who have not made the BL jump yet. I'm ready for 13.5 and 17.5. Maybe we mix the 17.5 and the stockers together and keep them limited to 4600's max. I hate toa say it but for those who want to run 13.5 lipo and those who want to run 13.5 4 cell. Maybe we should keep them seperated by battery, otherwise those running 4 cell will rolling road blocks for the lipo guys....................just a couple of thoughts.
IS IT SEPTEMBER YET ?????????

Jumping into the mix here. There is no problem running 17.5 guys with stock. As far as batteries we can say for sure that lipos will not be running with 4 cell, unless we can determine a slower motor for lipos to run against the 4 cell guys. For the first race we should keep it real simple and competitive. Just my .02
Casey
pmsimkins 07-30-2008, 12:06 PM 13.5 4 cell and 21.5 LiPO can run together very competitively. That is the way to go.
abdule 07-30-2008, 07:04 PM mix & match.........it's like looking in my sock box.........
JH Racing 07-30-2008, 07:13 PM mix & match.........it's like looking in my sock box.........
Mine to mismatch colors, one is longer than the other anyway should be a fun race track.
Larry B 07-31-2008, 04:19 PM I would concider a trip up that way to race. Here in Richmond, VA it is about 3 hour drive to the south or north for racing. I will be racing in Rosewood, NC where the largest class looks to be 21.5/lipo. Just keep posting what the classes will be. There could be 6 to 8 from VA that may come up. I always like to run at different tracks.
gindlmi 07-31-2008, 07:33 PM would be nice to run with you "thunder road " guys again. Looking forward to this upcoming season
TBRC1 07-31-2008, 10:24 PM I see something green waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the road ...........OH WAIT it's the green flag at the C in Frederick.
oldguy 08-13-2008, 09:29 AM @@@@cccc
abdule 08-15-2008, 08:29 PM I would say no to mix & match.....stock with stock, & brushless with brushless...........
oldguy 08-23-2008, 07:34 AM ^^^^^Sept 7th. ^^^^^
Greg H 08-24-2008, 10:05 PM Not sure yet when I'll be able to make it there, but I hope we can get a 21.5 Lipo class going.
oldguy 08-28-2008, 11:06 PM ^^^^^^^
mojoman 08-30-2008, 08:58 PM We're setting up and tearing down the oval tomorrow night to see how long we need to complete the transition. We're really close to the 7th! See you all in a week.
oldguy 09-01-2008, 09:16 PM ^^^^^^^^
jbm38 09-01-2008, 09:31 PM is there a website???
Jamie Hanson 09-01-2008, 11:03 PM Here is the Website for Hobbytown in Frederick Maryland.

Also for the guys who have asked, here are a couple pictures of the track.
I did measure the race lice last night. If you run a tight line the track is 180ft. A wide line came out to 187 or 188ft.
Doors will open at 9:00. Start time is going to be between 12:00 and 1:00. The reason for this is the shop itself will open at noon. At that time people can pay for the entry fees. The track supplies papers to fill out your info. They will be in your pit spaces when you arrive.
Jamie Hanson 09-01-2008, 11:06 PM Here are a few more...
I also want to let everyone know that what you see is just a start. We will have a bridge for the transponder loop the first few races. If the oval turnout looks like it will continue on a bi-weekly basis, the own has mentioned we may cut a line in the track to bury the wire and you see in the picture we had done for the road course.
I did make a couple laps on the track. The bite is SKY high. Bring hard RF tires or maybe consider gluing the edge of it. I have not had a chance to try anything other than Pinks or purple yet. In BSR's a Double Purple RF/double Pink LF/ Pink LR and double Pink RR worked OK. I think the FOAM family tire will be better for this track.
TBRC1 09-01-2008, 11:15 PM Jamie .....................that's funny the tires you mentioned are what I ran at willow mill in 13.5 :woohoo: See everyone sunday !!!!!!!!!!!!! And they are even BSR's:thumbsup:
TBRC1 09-01-2008, 11:21 PM MAN that track setup looks EXTRA sweeeeeeeeeet :woohoo:
jman91 09-01-2008, 11:22 PM Jamie-what traction compound is allowed?
Jamie Hanson 09-01-2008, 11:50 PM Right now anything goes. The track owner is thinking about moving away from Paragon though.
MR-RMS 09-02-2008, 07:43 AM Looks Great!!!
See ya Sunday
signman501 09-02-2008, 08:29 AM Well I'll start with my 17.5/4cell but I will bring the 13.5 with me. I don't really want to be that far behind. See you Sunday.

Hanson - Is that you driving from the infield? Any thoughts on a starting rollout for 13.5 4c. Also any interest in 17.5 Lipo?

Jamie Hanson 09-02-2008, 02:11 PM If we get 3 guys to run 17.5 lipo, we will run the class. I am not sure if there will be time for me to get a car together for that class though. I'll try.
13.5 rollout I played with a little. 3.34 seemed to work well for 13.5. I tried going higher to 3.55, but it seemed like too much. If the car is right 3.55 should be fine.

Hey Twit, you were to let me know about something... Put Whitney down and take care of it...
sc2002gtp 09-03-2008, 07:41 PM Will we need to bring tables and chairs or does the track have them?
Jamie Hanson 09-03-2008, 10:09 PM Just bring yourself and your equipment. Chairs are there, as well as pit space. I will try and remember to take a picture of the pits next time.
BILL.D 09-04-2008, 09:39 PM track looks good cant wait
