View Full Version : Why No Race At Rock Hill?

I don't mean to complain. I know that i talk a bunch of junk on here, and most guys just read it and say to thereselves, I hope i don't ever get that dumb. But there is something that is starting to get me down. It is the fact that there are no races on concrete. I'm not a pro on the stuff, but i sure do like running it every once in a while. There was a race scheduled at Rock Hill in the rc-oval series, it was cancelled to make way for a race at Fox Mountain. I for one hated to see that. Now, with the race being cancelled at the Sugar Bowl(concrete track) it would have been a great chance to schedule one at the Rock. I understand the Rock has a couple of bumps in it, but it's not that hard to get a car to handle the bumps. As for having spectators to watch, The Rock is like one of the best tracks on the east coast for having spectators. Don't get me wrong, i Like racing at Easely and at Lagoon, but dagumit i want some races on concrete also. I am getting a little tired of Pinks, I want to buy some greens and blues, and not worry so much about track temp. As far as concrete tracks, i can only think of a few, Rock Hill, Clover SC, Sugar Bowl, and this great track in Ft Laurdadale FL, But that is a long Ride. If there are more, list them, we may start a concrete series. Just my .02, not that anybody will care. Later-Benjie Wright:cool:

Benji,
I for one like Bethany, in Clover, SC. I have raced at Bethany, Rock Hill, SugarBowl, Jackson, and Spring Cove, all with my nitro car. Spring Cove is all but closed, Jackson is closed, the SugarBowl is now closed. I love the concrete, but its the travel time and distance for us guys. I dont see why racers in the Carolinas and Surrounding areas dont run Rock Hill and Bethany on a regular basis. I have never beeen to Fox Mountain, but I hope to because i hear its a fine facility.
As far as the GASCAR Series, we tried to keep the travel distances down because of the high gas prices, and I know its hard to make trips to LPR from NC and SC as well as it is for racers in AL to travel there. A 6-8 hour trip for racing was not a problem up until the past three years, when gas prices hit all of us. We make GASCAR racing decisions based on what is best for the majority of racers involved. We cancelled the upcoming race at the SugarBowl, but didnt ask the Carolina racers to make another trip to Montgomery. We just left the Sept. date open for you guys to race at your local tracks.
I agree, I would love to have concrete tracks on our schedule, but the logistics are the probem. Most of the concrete tracks are located in the Carolinas, so they should be on local race schedules.......... I am presently working on a GASCAR schedule for 2009, that has two divisions....East and West...... each with their own track preferences, and two races that are combined on set tracks. This will free up racers to race on the tracks they prefer, and let you guys run on concrete...... Just give me time to put this together and present it to the Nitro racers and GASCAR racers. I am trying to make it easier and more affordable for the majority of nitro racers involved, as to keep nitro oval growing. Believe, me, I have thought about this, and am working on it. Thanks for your input, and you are never considered as a "complainer"

Sincerely,
Tim Smith, President
GASCAR

Oh come on Tim, sure i am a complainer, all racers are complainers.lol Thanks for not thinking i am just trying to stir up something, because i am not. It's just been sooo long since i have raced on concrete, heck i might not even remember how too. Is that supposed to be East-West or North-South? If it's East -West please explain, I can't figure that out. As far as fox mountain, i have never raced on it, but i did drive a .12 on it, Smooth as glass, a little tight, of course we had just left clover and went there, sit our cars down and took off, we did not make any adjustments so we were not handling good at all. However i have always wanted to go back and race .12's on it, they say you can't do it, but i believe you could, just have to cut down on the # of cars on track at same time. Maybe we can figure something out that will satisfy everyone, until then i will try and tough it out, and whoop the smurfs on there home track (EASELY). Later-Benjie Wright:)

Benji,
North/South -- East/West -- It doesnt matter. I was just trying to divide the series into two divisions. The way i have it divided, with states not yet involved (but hope to be), it looks more like East/West. We have some interest in Indiana, and its closer for them to make it to the Carolinas than to Alabama. The name we give it doesnt matter, but I think two divisions will help everyone overall, keeping the expense down, plus reduce the number of cars on the track (maybe). If we dont get a handle on the travel expense, we all will be looking for something else to do

Benji,
I dont have anything written in stone, yet, this is just an idea I have to best promote Nitro Oval racing, and GASCAR. Also, GASCAR is a racers organization, and anything we do requires a vote of the members. Like I said earlier, let me follow through with my idea, then I will present it as an "Idea" to everyone at the nats. We have to help everyone keep expense down, PLUS, promote nitro oval in the long haul. Later.

Carolinas are very easy commute for me, i can fly right into Charlotte and drive from there, no direct flights to Alabama from here would have to change planes but that does not scare me..... Right now all I see is Guard Drill weekends interferring with my running that many of them.......... gonna try to work something out with them......

BOY, leave you guys for a few minutes and see what happens!!!

Benjie, the reason that the Rock Hill race was cancelled was not to make way for the Fox, we were going there anyway. The reason was I couldn’t get enough racers to go. It’s a shame too, a lot of people would see us there and “exposure” is what we are all looking for. PLUS it’s a ton of fun to race there. I agree the track has some bumps but heck so did BMS and it’s not banked NEARLY as much LOL. I’m putting it back on the schedule for 09’, we just don’t have enough active tracks to be that choosy anymore. Maybe that can be one that we can combine on and put on a good show, I couldn’t go with just three people.

As for Fox Mountain, I haven’t raced anything by .09’s on it but I can’t understand why the .12’s won’t work. We are not “that” far off in speed and it’s another really nice track. The RC Oval series will be back there on Aug 30 and I will tell you for sure then because I plan on running my .12. Like I said, we can’t be that picky anymore. If it’s tight…it’s tight for everyone, if it has bumps they are the same for everyone. My point is I don’t think it would be fun to have a series centered around one or two tracks just because they are the only “perfect” ones we have left.

Hey Darrell --

If you ever get the urge to run with us here at LPR (Alabama), let me know. You can have your stuff shipped to the house, I can pick you up at the airport and you can ride with us. Heck I have a spare room you can bunk in. I will get you back to airport and ship out your stuff.

Well Mclin, you can count on me being at Rock Hill Providing it doesn't interefere with my guard drill. Hold it, thats Darrell> I'll be there. How about this idea- Darrell you send them your schedule, and see if they can schedule around you as much as possible. Like i said i am not trying to stir up anybody. Yes it would be great to have both series running there on the same weekend, spectators are normally gracious at that place for some reason. I am going to really try and make that race you are talking about at Fox Mountain, I ain't like them smurfs, im not scare't. Heck i will even go to dillon, if it's big enough for two cars, thats a race. I am sure that between Tim and You Mclin, you guys will get us a good schedule line up for next year. It is really just to bad about the Sugar Bowl. Later-Benjie Wright
