View Full Version : The Dark Knight!
MartinHatfield 07-18-2008, 04:09 PM I went to see this glorious film this mornig and WOW! The reviews have all been dead-on about everyones performances. Ledger, Eckhart, Bale and Gyllenhall have done themselves proud.
NOTE: This aint your fathers' Batman. Hell, it aint even Tim Burtons' Batman. This is a whole new monster for a world that has seen some of the worst events in modern history. I am not preaching here, but 9/11 has created a whole new level of horror for film-goers. TDK feeds on that fear, and scares the crap out of ya!
I will never give spoilers to you guys, but DO NOT take the little ones to this film. The lack of language in this film is probably the only thing that kept it from an R rating.
I hope to be aboel to see it in IMAX sometime soon. I can see why the reviewers are suggesting so.
Steve244 07-18-2008, 09:34 PM I found myself looking for the door at about the 2 hour mark. But yes, it was pretty good.
I can't remember a film where I've been this tense during the whole thing. Ledger really was spectacular. Really. Eckhart was actually VERY good too. Hell, they were all very, very good. It's one huge morality play about choices and consequences. Bale is rock solid and the movie is played on a grand scale. Did I mention that Ledger is good?
Ohio_Southpaw 07-18-2008, 10:02 PM I saw it tonight. I liked Ledger's performance as the Joker, but I wouldn't call it Oscar caliber as some have. This movie is very story and character driven and doesn't put such an emphasis on his hardware and equipment as we saw (understandably) in the first one.

Where and when did you see it Steve? I was at the AMC off of Barrett Parkway for the 10:30 a.m. showing.
BrianM 07-19-2008, 04:11 AM Thanks for the posts AND lack of spoilers. With the all the merchandising, I think many people will be misled into taking kids to this movie. My 6 year old son loves Batman, but he will not see this movie.

Same Bat Place. Different Bat Time (6:15pm).
Zorro 07-19-2008, 11:07 AM I'm taking the family tomorrow. I'm confident that my 9 year-old daughter can handle it. Her six year-old male cousin, who cried when Pepper Potts put her hand into Iron Man's chest, won't be going with us.
Scott- It's pretty intense and fairly long.
Spoiler thread was created this morning.

Roland 07-20-2008, 09:51 AM My parents saw the movie in Chicago. It definitely sounds intense. My dad loved it and commented about the backdrop being downtown Chicago. I guess batman jumps from the top of the sears tower and there is an incredible motorcycle chase down Lakeshore Drive. My mom wishes she hadn't seen the film because there was too much blood and violence for her. I'll probably see the movie next weekend.
Zorro 07-20-2008, 03:04 PM The 9 year-old made it through - but just barely. I really don't have anything to add to all the accolades this movie has received. One extra little thrill for me that no one has mentioned so far. We finally got to see a live-action Batman with the iconic "white eyes".
Didn't the Clooney "Sonar-suit" Batman have the white eyes too?

Not that I remember. Maybe I blanked it out - like the rest of the movie.
TBS was running "Batman Forever" followed by "Batman & Robin" the other night at exactly the same time FX was running "Batman Begins". Switching back and forth between the two channels made for an interesting viewing experience. For those who complain that Goyer & Nolan's approach to the Batman mythos is "too serious" and not "comic book-y" enough, I can only say, we've already been down that road - and look where it took us.

No thank you.:drunk:
JMHZ2401 07-20-2008, 09:01 PM Movie was good, but a little long. I was ready for it to be over, but now I wonder what is in store for the next one.

Im not sure its pretty grim and somewhat graphic. If you remove Batmans mask and the Joker's makeup, its more like a modern terrorist movie. If you recall the video beheddings from Al Jezzira TV... this is in teh same vein sometimes. Also, the plot is a bit convoluted. It might be hard for a kid to follow for two and a half hours.
But its a very good movie overall.

I didn't watch the video beheadings, I'm proud to say. And the kid got it, I'm proud to say. And I agree that it's a very good movie overall. :p
jheilman 07-21-2008, 12:08 AM Well, my son's 9 and won't be seeing this for some time. This is a very intense film. I loved it but it's not really for the kiddies. But you wouldn't know that by the merchandisers. Just saw Batman and Joker mini action figures on TV with a very young kid playing with them. :freak:
As for what's next, well there was a throwaway line from Lucius that, taken at face value, was just a small joke, but as foreshadowing could have hinted at the next villain. I'm sure I'm REEEEALLY reaching on this one. Have to go to the spoiler thread.

I know the line you're talking about. It has to do with Batman's armor.
it was no IronMan but it was about as good as the Hulk. Ledger however, stole the movie though. At the end even he was getting tiresome. it could have been 45 mins shorter with no problem.
Uh... The Hulk wasn't very good mate.
Zorro 07-23-2008, 08:24 AM it was about as good as the Hulk.
Yeah, and "The Godfather Part II" was about as good as "Analyze This".
Lou Dalmaso 07-23-2008, 11:02 AM Finally saw it. In IMAX, no less..
you know what would have made it the best Batman movie ever?
If they had Kevin Conroy dub over Bale's laughable Batman "voice"
don't get me wrong, I think Bale makes a terrific Bruce Wayne, but his "tough guy" voice just makes me laugh when I hear it.
some very nice social comments about the freedoms that get suspended when dealing with terrorists, tho.
I agree with F91. they were about the same IMHO.
Whoa!!! You only agree with half of my NSHO. I thought TDK was brilliant!!
jheilman 07-25-2008, 10:19 PM It is the best Batman movie ever—voice and all. I'm taking my wife to see it next week. Can't wait to see it again.
Zorro, yep that's the line I'm talking about. Others reached the same conclusion, so I'm not totally nuts...yet.
I never found Ledger tiring. I thought the film flew by. I think I would have cared a little more for Rachel's character if Katie reprised the role, but that's such a minor nit.
Zorro 07-26-2008, 06:00 PM Going to see it again tonight with a good friend who hasn't seen a Batman movie since Burton's second installment. Should be interesting.
jheilman 07-26-2008, 09:29 PM Ooh, the second Burton film was a sour note. Improved with the Kilmer film and then became hopeless with Clooney and campiness.
Zorro 07-27-2008, 12:09 AM Actually he informed me that he saw part of the Clooney film in a hotel while on a business trip, but shut it off in horror after about 15 minutes. I think he was dumbfounded by "The Dark Knight". For me, it was arguably even better on the second viewing. It really is a true masterpiece of the genre'.

"It's the car...Chicks dig it" was better than Burton's film? Can't hang Clooney on how bad that movie was either. Shumacher really blew it with that. Car chases down the arms of giant statues, nipples and molded butt cracks....*shudder*

Yeah, the franchise went totally over the edge for me once Schumacher signed on. I can't watch either one of them. Take The Penguin out of "Batman Returns" and I think Burton would have had his Batman masterpiece.
Too bad "merchandising" prevailed.
Zorro 07-27-2008, 08:42 PM Just read in Entertainment Weekly that Nolan only commited to two installments. Whether he'll do the next one is up in the air at this point.
JeffG 07-27-2008, 09:50 PM Just saw it today. Aside from the first Burton film, I pretty much can't watch the others-haven't been able to for some time. In comparison to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, the others are very childish, extremely overblown, have unrealistic and cheesy, corny 'written to get a laugh' dialog, and totally collapse under their own weight. The Dark Knight is taken as seriously as any good crime drama-like a supercharged version of Michael Mann's 'Heat'. Ledger's Joker is believeably psychotic, and this is not a good film for the kids. If they wanna see Batman, you may have to tell them to make do with the animated series-this is a little too dark for most kids. Kudos to all involved in this production!
