I dont own an airbrush and i cant find any shops or web sites in England that stock The ghost grey for the seaviews hull. There only seems to be two choices here in England, Humbrol , who dont have a light ghost grey , and Tamiya who do but nobody has any in stock ( i am talking about spray cans)
I did manage to mix a nice ghost grey with Humbrol light gray and Humbrol mat white,. i put on with a brush and it turned out awful.I had to use mr muscle oven cleaner to get all the paint off, does any body know an
english web site that sells the shade in spray paint i am looking for

You might look at Halford's grey primer...

As djnick says kidcurry, get down to Halfords and pick up their grey primer, plus there's many other grey's there and because Halfords paint etches into the plastic you can even get away without using a primer too. If you choose another grey spray can other than the primer it will be glossier but that can then be toned down with something like Xtracrylix flat/matt varnish which is available from Hannants and can be brushed on as it dries smooth and you can't see the brush marks.

The grey primer is for cars, will it not harm the plastic.I went to Halfords but the sales girl wasnt sure if it was suitable on plastic surfaces . i just want to be 100 per cent sure i have got it right . You mean Halfords grey primer in the car paints section . they said they sell plasti-cote grey primer for plastic ie garden tables and chairs ect but they were out of stock . Kidcury

It won't harm the plastic at all. Even though they've altered the wording on the back of the grey primer so it doesn't mention plastic (it always used to) I used it the other day to spray a few models and like many people I've been using it for years. It doesn't react badly with styrene plastic at all and in fact it's the absolute best primer you could use for hard plastic. I've also sprayed Fine Molds and AMT Tie Fighters with it years ago (as it's a good colour match) and they're fine, plus many more models. I use it for just about anything modelwise, even Monarchs Nosferatu.

All of Halfords own brand car sprays (the ones that cost roughly 5.39 or thereabouts) are compatible with plastic (I'm sure the last time I tried...they stuck to plastic much better than metal) and they go on so well it beats using an airbrush. You can also use the Halfords clear lacquer to fix decals on well.

As for Plasti-Cote well I remember using that years ago on a model and it didn't stick very well. Also, the Dupli-Colour range say they're for plastic if I remember on the back of the tin but they don't stick as well as the Halfords range and scrape off easily.

Trust me kid, get the Halfords grey primer! I don't think you'll be disappointed with the finish it gives.

Ahh, Halford's grey primer. It has to be one of the great staples of modelmaking. Hard to beat it!

I have to agree, I followed the advice from djnick66 and sungod and went to Halfords and bought some and sprayed the hull of my seaview and it has turned out very well. I gave it three coats and i am very satisfied with the results, to say that this is the first time i have ever sprayed a model . The only dowside is that when the model dried i noticed that i had not sanded some superglue fully flush on the seam round the bay window, so i will have to sand it down ,mask off that area and spray it again, and hope that the colour dries more or less the same shade so that it doesnt look out of place with the rest of the paint scheme. anybody with any advice on that problem would be welcome. And thanks again guys for recomending Halfords grey primer. Kidcury

Glad you were impressed with it:) I wouldn't be surprised kid if you use it more and more now and it's simply the best primer you can use for hard plastic. You'll notice too that it sticks firmly to the plastic and doesn't come off easily like other primers.

As for respraying it after sanding..........don't worry, it will come back as exactly the same shade. And even if it doesn't you could always spray the whole thing again as it's so easy to use.

It's great stuff and I think many modellers would be lost without it now.

Funny thing is I live in Florida... no Halfords here for sure. BUT the stuff is so well known online, in magazine articles, etc. that if you are in the UK thats definitely the stuff to get!

Yes, it crops up a lot now and guaranteed it will be mentioned at least a few times in every British model magazine I get or online review. And it's not just the primer either. The various Halfords sprays have been used from everything to car models (they give a great gloss finish), sci fi and aircraft and as I said they stick to plastic so well you don't actually need the primer. I've used the Volvo silver for flying saucers, bare metal aircraft and I recently completed (well except for the bonnet which doesn't fit too well) a 1/8 scale Monogram E-type in British racing green metallic. They can save a lot of hassle with airbrushes and can make finishing a model much faster. I sprayed the chassis and engine in my E-type Jag in one night (they also dry real fast) using their matt black and it also came in handy for the black solar panels on my Tie Fighters.
