Just saw "Last Night" on HBO. It was an end of the world movie. But, unlike so many of these movies made recently with millions of dollars special effects, this movie was more was more of a character study about how some people dealt with the last 6 hours of their lives. The last 5 minutes of this movie really struck a chord with me.
Curious though, does anyone know how the earth ended? It was strange to see the sun shining at midnight, yet, there wasn't any change in temperature, weather, or anything to hint the Earth was out of orbit. I just gotta get this DVD

Might I presume you're talking about this movie Last Night (1998/I) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0156729/)? Is so, I saw this some months ago when I was still working Mids. I liked what I saw, but missed out on the first half hour. It was definitely different for what, at it's heart, was a SciFi/Drama flick.
I think it might have beem some sort of series of solar flares that caused the magnetic field to light up. Or perhaps another star was coming w/in range of Earth and caused something along the lines of a radiation surge?
Regardless, that wasn't the main point of the movie. As you pointed out, it was the way the characters handled things that counted.

I saw this a while back and thought it was a great movie. No special effects but great acting. Sandra Oh was great! Pops up on cable from time to time...

Yep, that's it. The only special effect was when we once got a shot of the sky and it looked like, to me, a white dwarf star coming towards Earth. It was too bright to be a comet and it was a white/blue color.
You didn't miss much in the first half hour. It started off with Patrick at his folks house for a last visit and they celebrated Christmas one last time. The rest of the characters were introduced similarly
It was a hoot when Sandra was out scavenging for some food/wine and returns to her car only to find it leaning up against a lightpost. A gang put it up there
This movie would have probably bombed in the theaters because it isn't a spectacle of a movie but I found myself really "bonding" with the characters. The last scene when Sandra realizes she's in love again and they lower their pistols made me really feel their pain of being cheated out of a full life. I don't know if it's my southern heritage or not but in the final scene where the song "Guantanomera"
is playing, it really set the mood. I was only disappointed that it wasn't the version by the SandPipers.
One thing I kept looking for but it never happened in this type of movie is any character questioning their belief in God and why God is letting this happen.
Guys, this is a definite tear jerker chick movie if you want to surprise them that SciFi can be good personal drama without special effects.
