A friend of mine, ran is mower low on oil and locked up the motor. He wants to replace the motor on the frame. He sent me a E-mail 5 HP Briggs Model#124702 Type 314901 Code 91061058.Vertical Shaft 48 tooth spline.Where did he get the 48 tooth spline from.I was going to measure the shaft from bottom of the deck to the end of the crankshaft where the blade adaper goes.

This mower probably has a splined crankshaft rather then using a key to lock the blade adapter to the shaft, it has splines. You can replace the engine with one that has a key way rather then the splines, but you will have to get the proper blade adapter to install the blade with.

30yearTech,thanks I talk with him he also said it was a selfprepelled mower,so he said that the blade adapter and the pully is all one piece.

You can still replace the engine with one that does not have a splined shaft, but you will also need to replace the self propel drive pulley along with the blade adapter or use an exact replacement engine that has the splined crankshaft.

Your best bet would be to order a short block from ariens, then all you will have to do is transfer all the external parts to the new block. This way you will have a splinted shaft and wont have to worry about changing your pulleys

There is a good possibility that it may be time for a new drive pulley anyways, as they are subject to wear and slipping. The code date from the engine puts this mower to be around 16 or 17 years old. Depending on the condition of the rest of the mower, it may be time to consider a replacement.
