I have a Simplicity Zero-turn with a B&S Vangaurd Premium Commercial on it.
Model # 358777... Type 0280E1... Code 03050811

Was mowing along and it just stopped. I suspect a fuel problem. It will crank but won't fire. Brand new battery. Have checked the fuel shutoff solenoid, it is clicking. Replaced fuel filter last night and when I tried to start it, it looked like there wasn't any fuel flowing into the filter. Could the fuel pump be bad?
It is a sealed black plastic pump. Engine did fire when I sprayed starter fluid into carb. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Check to make sure fuel hose to pump is open and not plugged, look in fuel tank and see if there is any obstruction where the fuel hose connects. Check the fuel cap and make sure the vent is open and air can enter the tank.

Check the fuel pump pulse hose to make sure it's connected and there are no leaks. Pulse hose should come out of the bottom of the pump and attach to the valve cover directly below the pump.

If all that checks out, then remove the fuel outlet hose and attach a piece of hose to the pump outlet and lay in a container, then crank the engine to see if fuel is being pumped out. If no fuel comes out of the pump then it may need to be replaced, if you are getting fuel out of the pump, then there is a problem with your carburetor or fuel solenoid.

Best of Luck...

ok....I replaced fuel pump and fuel line from filter to pump and pump to carb.. still no fuel being drawn through the filter. I also blew air through the line to the tank with my hand over the filler opening...built up good pressure so air got thru line into tank. The carb solenoid is clicking when I apply 9 volts to it. Could it be a compression problem? The fuel pump won't draw fuel without it, right?

Well, compression is a possibility, although I doubt it at least at this point in time.

Did you try cranking the engine over with the hose from the pump to the carburetor disconnected?

No fuel will flow through the filter until the carburetor needs it, and if there is fuel in the carburetor and the float valve is closed then you won't see any flow. You may need to remove the fuel solenoid and visually inspect the operation to be sure it is opening. There may also be some other foreign material in the carburetor preventing fuel from being metered out to the engine.

Well, I tried cranking the engine with the fuel pump line disconnected from the carb....no gas came out. I guess it's on to dismantaling the carb and double checking the solenoid. Any more thoughts?

If no fuel came out with the hose that leads to the carburetor removed, then the problem lies somewhere from the fuel tank to the fuel pump. Gas should come out of the discharge side of the pump if all the lines are open and the pump is operating properly.
