View Full Version : Vintage artistic paint jobs
SplitPoster 06-30-2008, 12:06 AM Got these cars in a lot, and the (pretty good) pictures in the listing just didn't do them justice. The bold brush work and rich texture - is the inspiration neo-impressionist, or are the muted colors inspired by more modern work by Pollack, or maybe the motive sports art of Nieman? I have honestly never seen anything quite this, with a T jet as the canvas...... Is it art, or was it one of you guys as a bored 9 year old with some leftover house paint? The stuff had the feel of melted crayon.

Impressive, huh?
A little water, a little turpentine, and some touch up....

And they have lost their originality, but I like them a little better running around the track this way.
T-Jet Racer 06-30-2008, 12:19 AM Nice save, It is hard to believe they are they same cars!
tjd241 06-30-2008, 07:42 AM 2 pieces of 40 year old plastic never looked so good... that is of course after they took a swim in the boo-boo jar!!!! nd
oldraceral 06-30-2008, 08:01 AM Looks good! Like little diamonds in the rough. At least the "artist" was a painter and not a sculptor.
micyou03 06-30-2008, 08:42 AM You ruined them!
Hilltop Raceway 06-30-2008, 09:55 AM Way to pull the rabbit out of the hat!!! Great save, now they look new!!! I keep hoping to find deals like that...RM

resinmonger 06-30-2008, 10:53 PM This is a sad day for the noble artist of days gone by. No doubt, he was some young slot head atempting to express his angst at not having a big enough allowance to buy a Badger spray rig so he could lay down a proper paint scheme. The beautiful expression of his desire and frustration were simply sloughed off in a tank of chemicals. It makes me weep. :freak:
The cars did clean up real nice... :hat:
ScottD961 06-30-2008, 11:19 PM How much ? LOL They turned out great .Really

Thanks, but since you're looking at the only reasonably finished section (meaning there ain't much beyond the frame), I think the rest will come to light slowly..... though the cars make the rounds every day. I think Joe's parking lot gets gravel and pavement this weekend. That is if the contractor shows up LOL.
BTW, I do feel some twinge of guilt over dissolving some unknown artist's vision in a pan of turpentine - but I have preserved the memory (for now). His work lives on, under my fingernails......
win43 07-01-2008, 11:58 AM Nice save. :thumbsup::thumbsup: @2 nice looking runners.
roadrner 07-01-2008, 09:02 PM Great save is correct. I picked up a few AFXes like that a few years ago and couldn't believe what they turned into once I took off the layer of brushed on Testors model paint. Actually the first time I mad a couple of bux off an auction I made better. :) :)
Then I started thinking about some of my early attempts at customizing using paint in a jar. :freak: rr
Dslot 07-03-2008, 11:25 AM Aww, man!
Didn't those great "post-apocalyptic" paint jobs tip you off? Those were the long-lost studio models that were used for the vehicle stunt scenes in "Mad Max." Now they're gone ... gone ...
(Actually I was glad to see how many forum members spared a thought for the kid whose loving efforts those cars represented. Whenever I get an abused T-jet, I wonder about the kid whose pride and joy this car once was, what memories he might still have of it, and what kind of guy it helped him to become. I guess we're all - even the steely-eyed racers among us - a bunch of sentimental slobs at heart. :o )
