Just to let you guys know, SMC will be releasing a 28c 3200 in about a month. I have been told 3 weeks and they should be ROAR legal for the Nats in Easley.

SMC 28c 5000 530 Runtime 7.43 AV 5.0 IR
SMC 28c 4000 430 Runtime 7.35 AV 6.5 IR
SMC 28c 3200 350 Runtime 7.25 AV 8.0 IR *
Common 3200 330 Runtime 7.11 AV 9.5 IR

These packs (just like other SMC Lipos) will offer the highest quaility materials, producing the highest voltage & lowest IR numbers out of any other Spec 3200 pack currently available. If you are SERIOUS about your racing then the new SMC 3200 should be on your "Go Fast" list.

*The SMC 3200 numbers are just an estimate. Actual cycle numbers will be posted once they are available.

Roar approved for Nats @ Easley? Do they come with a balancer connector?

Tom

If they arrive in time for approval they will be legal for the 2008 ROAR Paved Oval Nats in Easley.

They will look just like the 28c 4000 (same hard case), have a balancing plug, a 3200 sticker, and weight less than the 4000.

Tooling, materials, and demand added to the 28c 5000 delay. The 3200's use the 4000 case and the materials (cells) are available. Just hope they don't get hung up in customs! lol

Today were starting to ship out our new 3200/28C/7.4V pack. This new pack comes in the same casing as our 4000 pack and retails for 135.00. This pack uses the same materials as our 4000 and 5000 packs so the IR and voltage is very good. We were asked to release this pack as the 21.5 ROAR Oval class has a 3200 mAh limit.

Here are the numbers of a random pack cycled at 35 amps. 334 seconds , 7.28 average voltage and 7.9 IR.

this is all great....but the powers to be won't support any of the smc lipos!!!!!!!

if it ain't the all mighty orion pack we can't use it!!!!!

errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

as you can see i don't like the current rules!

tony do any tracks up there allow the smc in 17.5 or 21.5 classes? if so i'm moving!

21.5 is currently Orion and 17.5 is open ROAR lipos. With the Orion discontinued, and the Nats allowing the SMC I think guys will want to switch to the SMC later on in the year.

We'll just have to see.................

Kat, you don't like anyone's rules! And I already told you PINK was my color. I have to agree with you on most of your points though. 21.5 will most likely need to stay "spec" but 17.5 and higher should be a little more open. My only concern is matching up not only Mah rating but the c rating as well.

Without doing "specific" tests, anyone can call their packs whatever they want. SMC can change their chemical makeup, which will alter the "C" rating to whatever they need.

IMHO "C" rating and MAH are not the answers to Spec Class rules. Spec racing needs a weight limit per pack and a max O.D. dimension. All Lipo cells can be altered so if your pack is too heavy remove a few plates to lower the weight. Keep the length and width the same but lower the height of the pack. This will keep the plate number down, hence limiting the output of the pack.

Sub "C" NIHM cells have these rules why not Lipos?

With the relatively low amp draw of a 21.5 or 17.5 motor would the "C" Rating really be much of a factor on most tracks?

Nope, mod motors only hit 75+/- amps.

Cliff,

I don't know about the "C" rating being much of a factor, but looking at the posted AVERAGE VOLT number for the SMC packs...those look like they are about .10v higher than the 'average' Orion. w/o knowing more about the tests, etc.

Is this due to the HIGHER 'C' rating? I have no doubt..you WILL see a performance advantage w/ that much of a voltage increase over the other brands...but if EVERYONE is on that pack - all would be (everybodys favorite term) EQUAL

That they have Kat. In fact other than a couple of stray packs, everything I have bought for years for myself and the track has been SMC. They have good stuff and the #'s were always spot on. The problem is, Orion beat them to the punch with the lipo's and it's gonna take a little while for people and organizations to accept anything but the Orion. I am optomistic about things opening up some at our track but it won't be until the first of the year as I am going to let the drivers decide where we go from here. Let it be known though, SMC has my vote.BTW thong Boy, Money for nothing was the song, Brothers in arms was the album and Dire Straights was the band! Stop sniffing that suntan lotion!it's a damn shame even if you play by the rules they still want you to go home?

With the ROAR Lipo rules having a maximum dimension the capacity shouldn't be able to get much higher than 5000 when using high C rate cells. To get an increase in capacity the C rate would need to be lower. If the C rate increases then capacity will drop. At the moment our packs have the best IR and voltage so we have no plans on changing them but if we need to we can increase the C rate.

Were going to release a saddle pack for the offroad guys and our supplier made us 2 different packs to test. One is 4600/28C and they other is a 4900/22C which both have the same size so this shows the difference in mAh when changing the C rate.

How hard would it be to take one half of that saddle pack and make a 1s pack for use in a slower entry level class to get the speed down to around 17.5/4cell speeds and use a receiver pack?

Can you use the same tooling and just wire up half the pack in a 1s2p?

Danny-SMC
07-19-2008, 12:39 AM
It's going to be easy to do with our saddle pack. I heard about a 25.5 motor which may get the speeds close to 4 cell/17.5 which maybe easier than going to 1 cell Lipo and receiver pack.

Our 3200 is now ROAR legal and we have put in a new order with our supplier. We expect to have a new shipment in 4 to 5 weeks. Once we know if our pack will be used at most tracks we will make sure to keep them in stock.

congrats danny on taking the win in all the lipo classes at the upcoming paved oval nats! he he the other lipo pack is now a practice only pack!

Actually we have learnt that some racers have figured out a way to get there Orion packs to have higher average voltage and lower IR. From what I understand this increase will hurt the cycle life of the pack but makes it run allot faster. From what I was told this process doesn't really work on our packs and in fact it hurts them. So I guess our pack may help those who don't know how to get there Orion packs to increase in voltage so this maybe a positive thing after all.

On another note I was talking to one of our drivers who has 100+ cycles on one of our 5000s and he told me it's has the same cycle numbers as when it was new. I'm glad to hear this as we know were using the best materials in our packs but we don't eaxactly know the life expectancy of our packs as this will only be known as we put the cycles on them. I know the 3D Heli flyers have been very impressed with the life expectancy of our packs and they use them under higher loads.

Kat, I can't believe you support what ROAR did, I really thought you were much smarter than that. I'm happy about the batteries but to legalize them 2 weeks before the nat's is darn near criminal!

cliff and in what way is this smc's fault? i'm a big fan of smc and danny..and i hate orion ..it is a no brainer to support those who have been here for us over the years.

we have had a few packs come in with no charge on them, and one today just blew up when the racer turned on their speedo. Are there any known issues with these packs? Some have said they are junk after about 6 runs.
