View Full Version : B/l Motor Timing
SHAKY DAVE 06-16-2008, 03:10 PM After having my Novak 21.5 thermal every qualifing round but the first, won the "B" but the motor shutdown again, had a marshal reset it by turning the switch off & on and finished & won. it shutdown at 4 minuets into the main, had a marshall turn it off & on & finished third.Outside temp about 90,track temp 124.5 minute races.Only time i've had the motor apart was when i put on a Novak heatsink. How do i tell where the timing is at?Is the timing going to act like it did with brushed motors?I wasent the only one thermaling saturday, but this has got me concerned.Kept dropping teeth on the pinion as the day went by.Any suggestions? The way this motor smells now, looks like its going back to Novak.
L4OvalRacer 06-16-2008, 03:33 PM Well the 21.5 is very diffrent from stock and mod brushed motors. Im not shure what track you run on but seems that the gearing is way to high. I dont think that the timing will change but maybe 2 teeth diffrence. With it thermaling that many times and getting that hot you will really need a new rotor and maybe a new motor. if you are running a 21.5 you will need to gear high. Gearing low will make the motor even get hotter. I would say you need to run a 4.2 to 4.5 rollout the bigger the track the higher the gear..
SHAKY DAVE 06-16-2008, 03:38 PM Hot Rod hobbys,Saugus,Ca.270' runline.rollout around 3.85.96 spur,usually 53 pinion.went up to 54 in the second qualifier.ended up with a 50 tooth in the main
brian0525 06-16-2008, 04:03 PM 242' concrete banked oval on caps but the rollout is 4.50+, but on a track the is a 100 ft. bigger but very lttle banking the rollout isn't much different.
If you have a not so good setup with this motor it will thermal easily.
SHAKY DAVE 06-16-2008, 04:13 PM Setup is good.Car is competative.Pro 3 solid, cutout chassis.3 double pinks, double purple rt front.Protoform Camry.Still would like to know if timing could be the problem.still would like to know how to check timing and where it should be at.Thanks

reggie's dad 06-16-2008, 04:38 PM Not to hijack this thread but what's the current theory on advancing timing on a 17.5 I thought someone told me not to on a 17.5? also I'm running a lrp tc spec, can you change the timing at the speedo? thanks Rich Hammond :dude:
SHAKY DAVE 06-16-2008, 05:12 PM Thanks,Tom.I'll check it when i get home.21.5 have the timing marks where they are on the motor in the photo?
L4OvalRacer 06-16-2008, 05:12 PM Changing the timing on a 17.5 i thought changed the power range greatly..
brian0525 06-16-2008, 06:37 PM I run timing all the way up on all my motors including 21.5.
stoneman 06-16-2008, 08:44 PM I run on a 360' track in florida at 90 deg outside temps and I run a 4.1 rollout.the motor comes off the track at 160 to 170 deg. I run an LRP and have had motor temp up to 210 deg. We also run a shorter track in Daytona that I run a 3.9 rollout there. The motor that hit 210 was replaced because the temp would not come down. so I think you should try another motor if the temps come back down you should send the old one in to novak. I wouldn't mess with the timing it only heats up the motor. I realy consider that trying to cheat. I beat guys that turn up there timing all the time. I think it should be against the rules to alter the motor in any way.
katf1sh 06-16-2008, 10:24 PM cut blue wire! gear it until it almost melts..than your close!
Echeconnee 06-16-2008, 10:43 PM cut blue wire=illegal motor and speedo!!!!!!!!!cut blue wire! gear it until it almost melts..than your close!

SHAKY DAVE 06-17-2008, 05:00 PM I checked my motor last night and the timing was super advanced. The screw below the "A" tab was past the timing mark.tried to loosen the screws & move the black endbell, wouldent budge.I never moved the timing & when i put on the heatsink, that was the only time the motor was apart.Any reason why the endbell wouldent move?UH OH.Guess i'll have to take the motor apart & see how everything works.
irvan36mm 06-17-2008, 05:13 PM After having experience in burning up 2 different motors (10.5 & 13.5), both of my meltdowns were due to the bearing locking-up in the endbell. Have you checked your bearings?
Andy Koback 06-17-2008, 07:00 PM I checked my motor last night and the timing was super advanced.
The black endbell doesn't move. Just the outer notched ring around it. the 3 screws still have to be loosened. They're all color coded for different motors...10.5--13.5--21.5...doesn't move much either, 1/4 inch or so.
pmsimkins 06-17-2008, 07:24 PM It's also not going to move freely like the endbell of a brushed motor. Takes a little elbow grease.
There's nothing wrong with the timing being all the way up, most people you see will have it that way. More than anything the timing just alters what gearing the motor will want.
If you have over heating problems first check that everyhintg is functioning normally, bearings not siezed, no visible damage, no burned up windings etc.
If nothing is wrong with the motor then you're simply geared too high and your setup is probably off.

Lose the heatsink.. 21.5 lipo timing all the way up..
SHAKY DAVE 06-25-2008, 04:26 PM and don't forget 150 degree track temp:thumbsup:how are you koz?hows everything in norcal?
racing has slowed up here lite turnouts..
SHAKY DAVE 06-26-2008, 10:17 AM same deal down here.used to average 50 at hot rods.now down to 25/30.
