Nova Designs 06-16-2008, 03:07 PM We were just getting the news here at the studio too... TERRIBLE news!
RIP, Stan, and thank you for all your awesome creations!
PhilipMarlowe 06-16-2008, 03:13 PM I wasn't even aware he had cancer, I went to a book signing for his book The Winston Effect about a year or so ago and he seemed incredibly healthy and happy.
Sad, sad news.
Later note, I checked the inscription, it was 1-6-07, you'd have never guessed he was sick by the way he looked and acted.
John P 06-16-2008, 03:27 PM :(....
ChrisW 06-16-2008, 03:54 PM Man, did that one come out of left field.
Whenever there's a credit in a movie for practical effects by Winston's team, I'd get a giddy feeling that at least THAT was going to be done right. He was a perfectionist.
Rest In Peace
miniature sun 06-16-2008, 05:02 PM That's really bad news. By all accounts he was a really great guy away from the work he did.
Zorro 06-16-2008, 07:39 PM Stan's passing reminds us of how much the movie business has changed. His was a hallowed name. We've passed the era when physical effects inspired so many kids to the passions and interests we maintain to this day. No slight on today's CGI wizards, but it just ain't the same.
jheilman 06-16-2008, 10:41 PM There has been a string of losses lately. Winston, Tim Russert, Harry Lange, Joe Pevney. Too sad.
Eric K 06-16-2008, 11:07 PM :(.......
I'm beginning to think it's not death comes in threes...but rather death comes for three months straight.
Was going to say 'years' but, that may be pushing it.
deadmanincfan 06-16-2008, 11:44 PM The make-up and effects world has lost a class act...
very sad day................. His approach to effects was very clever. I still marvel at the way ALIENS went together.
miniature sun 06-17-2008, 07:36 AM It's a little sad how things have gone recently. Back in the day, if you saw the likes of Stan Winston, Rick Baker, Rob Bottin etc. on a movie's credits then you knew you were in for a treat and that, even if the movie tanked, the effects would be amazing and totally believable.
Nowadays it's mostly CGI carried out by anonymous programmers who, whilst obviously talented, seem to produce stuff that is rarely believable and mostly forgettable...certainly no replacement for the likes of Stan.

I know exactly what you mean, to this day when I'm working or painting on a model, I'll think of some old picture from Starlog or Cinemafantastique of one of the greats working on a miniature, and feel a real kinship(albeit an outclassed one!). I can't see the next generation of modelers imagining they're Joe Smith who animated the tail in Cloverfield, not to mention being inspired by it.
Just Plain Al 06-17-2008, 02:30 PM I always admired his work, even though some of the movies didn't inspire much admiration. He and his team always seemed to put out an quality above and beyond.
JeffG 06-17-2008, 10:47 PM This man has done some really cool stuff over his career and will be missed. Fortunately, his contributions and those he mentored will go on.
deadmanincfan 06-17-2008, 11:24 PM PUMPKINHEAD...one of my favorite movies...Stan showed he could direct as well as he could pul together effects.
gruffydd 06-23-2008, 12:38 PM I'm glad I have some good taped AMC with Stan hosting the monster movies - back when AMC was worthwhile. We love you Stan!

You're right! I forgot about those. Were they before or after AMC started running commercials during the movie?

Like I said Chris - "back when AMC was worthwhile."
