Talbot Hills was open on Fathers Day as track owner M King was preparing for a race next Saturday.

After spending the morning tuning Team King's G3 Superstock cars, several G3 polymer cars made their appearance. This is a new class for Team King, having a disappointing DNF in last years G3 Championships, due to the unfortunate loss of a pickup shoe during a race heat.

After several successful runs with Car#1, including what appears to be a new track record of 1.986 seconds, Car#2 pulled onto the track.

As the driver of Car#2 was warming up, the fans were watching the lap timer click down to what they hoped would be a new track record. 2.190, 2.112, 2.079, 2.064....then tradegy struck.

Un-noticed, a fan had wandered onto the track. In moments, Car#2 was upside down and on fire, the rear axle protruding upward in grim testimony to the force of the high speed collision.

The fan, well, the best desription of the fan is, SPLAT!

After being pulled from the flaming wreckage, the driver of Car#2, clearly shaken, could only say "I never say him, err, it!"

Unfortunately, the bug could not be revived, but did make a tasty treat for the track mascot, a 10 year old black lab who was investigating the accident.

Talbot Hills will be closed until further notice.

Great American Pill Bug, the Opposum of the Slot Car world. I'd drive out of my lane to hit one if I could.

Racing has always been a dangerous pursuit, but the bug died doing what he loved to do. That's better than ending up dessicated in roach motel any day. R.I.P.

When I started back in 1995, one of the tracks I raced at locally was a 6-lane oval, crash and burn.

One night, one of the local hotshoes had a commanding lead in his heat race, when all of the sudden BAM! A ladybug (HO-scale turtle) tried crossing the track and got into his lane, sending his car flying. He was livid! I don't believe he came back for a while after that.

Years ago we had a very wet winter, followed by a wet spring and all of the Mexican Browns (roaches) from the orchard found their way into the garage and into the 4 lane road course I had at the time. They were living in the buildings, which were lighted, so when the lights came on and the heat began to build they would crawl out the windows. I thought it was an absolute crack up, but a few of the racers didn't share my sense of humor. Especially after a few hitched rides out of my garage in their tackle boxes. After a modified incident where a bug was struck at a very high speed resulting in the utter destruction of a cobalt car (it didn't do the bug much good either) Roach Raceway closed it's doors.

When I began salvaging the track and buildings from the layout we counted some 300 bugs that had died in the buildings and in the landscaping. With all of those that escaped there was maybe twice that number. When I took apart Laguna Seca I did find a small nest of pill bugs, oddly under the portion that housed the lake. Sequoia was sealed with white glue soaked paper towels and then a thick coat of latex paint to avoid the same problem. So far (knock wood) neither Smokey or I have found unwanted specators in the stands.

Last night, at the overwhelmingly successful 'Forney Fina 500', Benstein, the leader in one of our races, had a sudden problem with his car that caused it to slow dramatically. After two laps, he pulled in to the pits. He picked the car up and rolled the axle to find a small bug had been sucked into the motor. I'm sure the poor bug was just curious as to how this thing was crawling around the track faster than he could fly. So, as any other car enthusiast would do, he decided to take a look under the hood. Bad move. Ben rolled as much of the pieces out as he could, and continued racing. He finished second, by two laps.
