View Full Version : Shyamalan Does It Again Zorro 06-14-2008, 08:58 AM I kinda' feel sorry for the guy .... http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/10007985-happening/ sbaxter 06-14-2008, 09:58 AM I may have to check this one out on DVD. I can't help but wonder if there might not be some piling-on with this one. I remember all the horrific reviews for Last Action Hero. When I finally got around to seeing it, I thought it was kinda fun. Maybe it was a case of severely low expectations, but what I saw was nowhere near as bad as the reviews I'd read. Then there was The Emperor's New Groove, which is actually hilarious and was unjustly panned in reviews. And for whatever reason, I didn't hate The Village … Qapla' SSB John P 06-14-2008, 10:18 AM Somebody on another bboard pointed out that he's a very good director, but maybe he should be directing someone else's scripts and stop trying to write his own. TAY666 06-14-2008, 11:55 AM Hey. I love Last Action Hero and watch it quite often. It's a great action movie with a fun premise that keeps it fresh and light. PhilipMarlowe 06-14-2008, 12:32 PM Man, Hollywood sure has gotten a lot of mileage out of that Einstein quote about bees. Too bad Einstein never actually said it. http://www.snopes.com/quotes/einstein/bees.asp Carson Dyle 06-14-2008, 12:55 PM If Mr. Shyamalan and his films have been the subject of bad press it's been by his own doing. Wanna improve your image and revitalize your moribund career, M. Night? Try crawling out of your own behind and making a film that doesn't suck for a change. fluke 06-14-2008, 03:08 PM My wife and I have been waiting for months for this one....but after the MANY reviews I have read so far with spoilers.... its now a rental fer sure. We did the same for lady in the water and when we finally saw that it we liked it, not what the critc's said at all ....an eight dollar flick no, matinée price film yes and I agree that for now on he should be directing other peoples stories. I think that most folk just don't get what he's trying to lay down with his films...true the last few do not hold a candle to 6th sense or Unbreakable....but the same critic's were also disappointed in 'Signs', disliked 'The village' and hated 'Lady in the water' I'm sorry to differ....but I loved Signs, liked The Village and enjoyed Lady in the water even a tad more. Lady in the water is a film that my whole family likes. Lady in the water's delivery was kinda off but the humor and characters where done pretty well etc etc and many folks that I have spoken to liked Lady in the water. I feel the last three films mentioned are disliked mainly because they lack the big CGI effects, shock about half the cost and all the glitter that movie goers have come to expect in todays films. Those three films also did so much with very few sets, effects and were mainly story and character based compared to most films out today. So far I'm not so sure about 'The happening' .....but he does have a strange and different style and I will give it the same chance that I gave Lady in the water...because unlike many folks I don't get turned off my technical goofs or over sights....I watch a film to see, feel the story and to escape this mortal coil for a period of time....not to be dazzled by special effects and sexy side kick chicks....which is the only thing that bugged me about Transformers....almost every shot of his girlfriend was a planned 'glamor shot' to the point that is was like some other agency paid extra for them? Don't get me wrong....I love Transformers & Iron man and do not hold the last two of Shyamalan's films at the top of my collection but I do like them. 'LATELY' ....no one else has the balls to try tell the populous in film that we suck and our life styles are driving the planet and our selves to an end of some kind as hard as Shyamalan has. jbond 06-14-2008, 05:28 PM None of Shyamalan's films have had much in the way of CG effects--but let's face it, the stories have gotten successively weaker and have much less impact. I liked Signs except for the nonsensical ending--but I was still entertained throughout that movie and it was quite suspenseful. The Village was a sharp commentary on the politics of fear; the problem is there's not enough story for a 2-hour movie. Shyamalan's bible is The Twilight Zone which through most of its run told these kinds of stories in about 22 minutes. Lady in the Water to me is just an embarrassment--if you're going to insist with a straight face on putting yourself in your own movie in the role of a messianic figure, you deserve every brickbat you get. Reaction to The Happening may indeed be piling on as Shyamalan is a huge target now...that's certainly what happened to the Wachowskis on Speed Racer, which is by no means a great movie but not nearly as bad as the reviews would have it. But Shyamalan does seem to be hammering at the same theme over and over again in his stories: man's faith is tested when weird supernatural events occur. I agree he should stick to directing: he's basically said what he has to say in his scripts and he seems to be repeating himself... fluke 06-14-2008, 05:38 PM I agree 100% I just wish that more films had more impact with less effects.....seems that so much of our society is media trained, based or directed. terryr 06-14-2008, 05:56 PM As Einstein once said "hollywood sucks!" Hollywood can't write, and hates to read. New people have great ideas, but when indoctrinated into 'hollywood' they lose the ability. Unbreakable and Sixth Sense are the only two I like. fluke 06-14-2008, 06:00 PM Man Terry your a tough one to please. To each thier own and freedom for all I say! Have a good weekend dudes ! jheilman 06-14-2008, 09:50 PM Sixth Sense is my fave followed by Signs. The others were less interesting to me and less involving. I think he gets great actors and he's a very talented director. As was said, it all comes down to the stories and they're getting weaker. xr4sam 06-15-2008, 02:02 AM "What a TWIST!" Carson Dyle 06-15-2008, 03:00 AM I think he gets great actors and he's a very talented director. If you like protagonists who, for no apparent reason, deliver all their lines in the same slow, sonambulant whisper, Shyamalan's the director for you. Roland 06-15-2008, 01:19 PM The nation of India is very proud of Shyamalan's accomplishments. I liked a couple of his movies: The 6th Sense and Signs. But, I am not really a big fan of his. Griffworks 06-15-2008, 01:29 PM Saw it Friday night w/Wife during a Date Night. I liked it, but don't think it was stellar. Parts of the movie were just... meh... and overall it didn't feel all that tight so far as script and/or direction. Overall, I'd give it a 3 out of 5 stars, but then I'm fairly easy to please when it comes to supernatural, horror, thrillers or SciFi. I have to agree w/how most of his protagonists seem to whisper their way thru the movie. I think that Bruce Willis pulled it off pretty well w/The Sixth Sense & Unbreakable and that it worked fairly well in The Village given the setting, but didn't seem to work too well in the other movies. Anyhow, I don't think it was a waste of my time. Definitely a Rental for those who like MNS's previous works, but don't want to spend the money in gas and ticket prices. Or wait for it to show up on cable or satellite, record it and watch it at your leisure. Nova Designs 06-15-2008, 04:14 PM On the other hand... whoohoo!!! http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/kung_fu_panda/ Yeah, shameless plug. fluke 06-17-2008, 11:41 PM Funny you say that...... http://www.youtube.com:80/watch?v=9HJzy3WSYFM PerfesserCoffee 06-18-2008, 11:04 AM I thought it was a remake of this film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061748/ Isn't the theme song to the original by Diana Ross? I've always liked that one. PhilipMarlowe 06-18-2008, 03:06 PM I thought it was a remake of this film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061748/ Isn't the theme song to the original by Diana Ross? I've always liked that one. Anthony Quinn, Michael Parks, George Maharis, and Oscar Holmolka as hippies!!!!:freak: I'm gonna definately have to check that one out! Sounds like a lot more fun than MNS's version. Eric K 06-18-2008, 04:52 PM Actually, Anthony Quinn is the kidnapped 'goodfella'. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
