View Full Version : Joe's Hobby Barn 2008 DIRT OVAL Terre Haute
basketcase45 06-14-2008, 08:29 AM Hello everyone! Joe's Hobby Barn and Raceway now has an OVAL racetrack that goes around the motocross style track in the interior of the OVAL. The dirt is a sandy hard pack track with berms at each of the ends. The run-line is 320 feet (plenty of room to open up the throttle!).
Joe's is on Springhill about a mile east of SR41. From I-70 go south on SR41 four stoplights to Springhill, turn left (east) go about a mile, Joe's is on the left, right before the RR tracks. We race on Sundays, the track opens at 10am and racing begins at 1:00pm. we run 2 heats and a main event. $15 for the first entry and $10 for each additional. The hobbyshop is open 10 am to 6pm., the # is 812 299 5773. We run both Offroad and OVAL on the same day, you can run either or both, Nitro and electric. The most popular classes at Joe's ( not in any particular order) have been:
1/8 4wd buggy
1/8 4wd Truggy
1/10 Gas(nitro) Truck
1/10 Electric truck (stock and mod)
Monster Trucks (electric will run w/ the Nitros)
1/10 electric buggy 4wd
Novice (run what you brung)
Joe's will run ANY class as long as there are 3 entrants.
After the mains have been run, joe's runs a "snake" race. It costs an additional $2 but the winner gets a trophy at the end of the race. It is the most challenging race there is- 5 minutes racing with no turn marshalls.
Come on out to Joe's this summer for some family friendly racing. There will be lots of smiling faces to meet you and some excellent competition!
CClay1282 06-15-2008, 09:47 PM C'mon guys, we need some more people to show up here. Its a great track, and great people. If your a newbie and need help, come on down and we can help you out. Give us a try, you wont be dissapointed.
I personally dont run the oval, but i do run the off-road course.
one18thscalerac 06-17-2008, 07:36 PM how smooth is the oval both tracks look great
CClay1282 06-17-2008, 09:47 PM It is fairly smooth. We try to keep the rocks and stuff out of the driveline.
CClay1282 06-22-2008, 10:40 PM Bump up guys. Lets get some more racers down here. We race every sunday, except for holidays and velo races. The next velo race is july 19, so you have plenty of time to come down before that and after that. :)
scottman2007 06-25-2008, 07:07 AM anybody running 1/8th nitro latemodel cars converted from 1/8th buggy???? on the oval??
basketcase45 06-25-2008, 06:38 PM anybody running 1/8th nitro latemodel cars converted from 1/8th buggy???? on the oval??
Not yet, although I have seen some of them ready to go. So far we have only had classes of 1/8 buggy on the oval. I think it would be a cool class and I would be interested in doing the conversion if there are some others to race against. Come on out next Sunday and bring it with you, lets see what it will do!
scottman2007 06-25-2008, 07:08 PM Well iam still coverting it,alot of people are using the front bumper ,foam and front body mounts from the Ofna GTP II,thats what iam using, you might have to Mod the front bumper to get it to mount, then You can use the rear body mounts off the GTP II or make some simple mounts, also Losi is coming out with a 1/8th scale Late model Body called the "Stinger" due out in early July,Sonny .B at horizon converted a losi 8 buggy and this weekend took TQ.Ill tell you what if some guys start running 1/8 late model iam there!!!!!!!!Hope to have my done soon, and ill bring it.try and drum up some of these guys running their buggies to convert them.
CClay1282 07-06-2008, 10:06 PM I, for one, had a blast today. Thanks to all the people that showed up. I know that the turn marshalling was a mess, but we made it work. Thanks guys for supporting Joes hobby barn and raceway.
A big round of applaus needs to go to gerry, for not only running the show, but for finishing first in 1/10th elec truck oval. Good job Gerry.
Good Job Ron for the win in MT/off road.
CClay1282 07-20-2008, 07:42 PM Come on guys, we really need some more racers to show up. If there are any issues any of you have, feel free to email or pm me and let me know what they are. I want more people to show up so we can show everyone that we can put on a great show.
If you have any questions or concerns, please dont hesitate to email me a cclay1282@aol.com. Thank you.

Yes we race 1/8 buggy on the OVAL. The tire of choice is Proline holeshots, although bowties and switches work OK too. We have an Offroad track as well and race both Oval and offroad on the same day.
We are starting a new points series for September, I'll call it the "Last Blast of Summer Points Series Shootout at the Barn" lol All classes will race for points for 5 weeks. The series will run September 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th, and October 5th. One throw-out will be allowed. The last day, Oct. 5th will be a cookout/ party/ trophy day and will count for "double" points on the track. We have a bunch of friendly, helpful people and some great competition, come on out and show us what you've got!!
scottman2007 08-12-2008, 06:48 AM Has anybody been running 1/8 latemodel bodies on their buggies yet? I have my converted over???if so can you run 1/8 late model with buggies??

As of now, no, but I think it would be a BLAST! And yes, if you bring it we will be glad to get you on the racetrack. I would like to do the conversion, and take it up to J-tec and get in on the race they will be having in October. Are you going there Scottman? I am on their forum as well and I have seen you post up there too. Where is a good place to get the body? What else do you have to do to make the switch?
one18thscalerac 08-12-2008, 06:58 PM what tires are hookin on 1/10th truck
scottman2007 08-12-2008, 08:44 PM Basketcase
Scottman here,I have a new losi stinger body I painted,$55.00 Ouch. Also what i did was go on ofna.com and look the manual for the GTP II on road chassis which is the same a s the GTP II Dirt chassis,Anyway I got the front bumper, and to cut on it a bit to get it to work on the Losi 8,bought the front body mounts, and rear mounts.bumpe foam. and your ready to go.I hear onfa is bring out a RTR Dirt 1/8 late model,$349.99.and I hear they are doing a pro version of the roller I think.another great track to run on is way up northern Indiana at state line RC on friday nights at 7pm,BANKED DIRT OVAL= fast!!!!!
They run alot of 1/10 scale nitro and electric trucks, and i have been told when i get my 1/8 scale done to let a few guys up there know, and they will slap a body on their buggies as well.
I would love to go to JTEC,and i want to race there in Oct.iam changing shock oil in my car to 80wt and my car is done,i will test it on a close to home track oval we bash on with our monster trucks, and when i get it set up i want to head to state line RC and Joes Hobby Barn and see how she runs. ill come down there if you guys can get a few people with late model bodies,if they are running 1/8 scale, why not slap a late model on them and run??????????Just My two cents on that...
basketcase45 08-12-2008, 09:41 PM what tires are hookin on 1/10th truck
On 1/10 truck- Proline edge on front and Proline holeshots on rear in M3 compound. That is the best combo for Electric trucks like T4 and XXX. For Gas (nitro) trucks, Edges on front and either Holeshots or Bowties on the rear will get you hooked up. Are you coming for the Shootout? I hope so, and bring as many friends as possible! How about you, Scottman, will you be coming for the Shootout in September? We need as many racers as we can get!
scottman2007 08-13-2008, 06:13 PM didnt know about the shoot out in Sept, bring me up to date. I might ,tell me about it.:hat:

the " Last Blast of Summer Series Shootout at the Barn" lol
We will race for 5 weeks, the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th of September, and the 5th of October. All classes will race for points for 5 weeks. First place in the main will recieve 30 points, 28 for second, 26 for third, and so on, Top Qualifier in the heats will recieve 2 points. One throw-out will be allowed. The last day, October 5th, will be a cookout/ party/ trophy day, and will also count for "double" points on the track. There are 4 weeks until this series begins, so that gives us time to invite friends, fellow racers and newbys out to try their hand at some competitive racing. See the first post in this thread for classes, directions, race time, etc. Give us your input as to what you would like to see for this series, and come on out to Joe's in September for some great fun and competition.
I posted this on the Offroad racing forum. check it out: http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=213697
Scottman, you have a PM (private message) = ygpm
basketcase45 08-14-2008, 09:46 AM I copied this from J-tec's forum. Here is the rules they are using for latemodel oval: 1/8 SCALE LATEMODEL BODY
MUST RUN OFF-ROAD BUGGY/CAR PRODUCTION CHASSIS. NO TRUGGIES OR MONSTER TRUCKS (THIS IS TOO VAGUE)
MUST RUN NUMBERS ON BOTH SIDES OF BODY
MUST RUN SPEC TIRE OFNA PART NUMBER 86052
Does not have to be the pre-mounts, but must be that tire
There will not be any grooving of the tires
NO SIDE DAMS
2" SPOILER MEASURED FROM THE DECK LID
ANY MOTOR
SINGLE SPEED TRANSMISSION ONLY
NO RESTRICTIONS ON WINDOW OPENINGS
I think these are the rules laid down by NSCS
twinrc 08-20-2008, 03:23 PM What are the 1/8th oval rules at your track? How long are the races?
basketcase45 08-20-2008, 06:08 PM What are the 1/8th oval rules at your track? How long are the races?
So far, nobody has shown up with a latemodel body oval car, so we have just been running 1/8 buggies on the oval. We are pretty loose with the rules, so pretty much anything goes- buggy chassis, body, any motor, any tires. I have run mine with holeshots and knuckles, and bowties, they all seem to work OK. I really wanted to get mine setup as a Latemodel to run the race in Oct. at J-tec, but I am poor, so I will probably keep it as a buggy for the rest of the season, and work on making the conversion over the winter. The spec tires for Latemodel look pretty smooth, so you must have a smooth track to run on. Our track is not as smooth as that one J-tec has, but it has banked corners, and is Quite a bit bigger- 320ft. run-line, so it is a different kind of racing anyway. On our track, since it is so long, you can really open up the throttle on the straights. We run 5 minute heats, and longer mains, depending on the consensus of the racers, up to 10 minutes if people are willing.
Scottman, We would love to see your car and give us a demonstration. I think it would be awesome to get a class of these going here at Joe's. Come on out in September and give us a try, Mark
twinrc 08-21-2008, 09:25 PM My brother and I will be comming from IL to race 1/8 oval as much as we can....There are no tracks anywhere around here so we are really looking forward to racing with you guys...Does the hobby shop have spare OFNA parts and tires that will work on the track?

Good!! I will do my best to get the track in good shape by then. The Hobby shop does have some spare parts, but don't count on it having what you need. If you know you will be needing something, call the hobby shop and they will be happy to order it for you and have it ready when you get there. The # is 812 299 5773 it helps if you know the part number.
September 7th will be the next race, and the beginning of the Points Shootout Series. Come one, come all!!
basketcase45 08-31-2008, 04:48 PM OK Steve and I spent the day working on the track today and we got it looking pretty good. There are still some weeds here and there, but the drive lanes are clear and the OVAL is looking awesome! I had made a special tool for cutting the weeds' roots off and I must say it worked real good. Then we raked everything up and I blew it off with the blower, and then we doused everything else with a big dose of ROUNDUP. and MAN, WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES!! We have a decent racetrack again. :woohoo::)
Our next race will be next Sunday, September 7th. The track opens at 10:00 am and racing begins at 1:00pm. We are beginning a points series on the 7th and will be racing the next 5 Sundays with the last race on October 5th. The Last day, Oct. 5th, will be a cookout/ party/ trophy day and will count for "DOUBLE" points on the track. Joe's is a family friendly track. Come on out in September and give us a shot.
Peeps- we have a 320 foot OVAL with banked ends and MAN, can you tear it up w/ a 1/8 buggy or Truggy!! Our track is a sandy base that gets packed hard after a few races. Proline Holeshots are the tire of choice, but Bowties, Switches, Crimefighters, and Knuckles 2.0 seem to work OK too. It depends on the driver. We will also be racing 1/10 truck, Monster Truck, and gas truck if there are enough interested.
RCDawg83 08-31-2008, 05:08 PM Steve and Mark, you guys rock  Your efforts are appreciated by all.
I'll be there next Sunday at least with 4WD mod buggy and stock truck. Also got a T-Maxx to play with. I'll bring it even if its not ready to run - needs shocks rebuilt and rear diff is loose/wobbly. Hopefully the storm will not come up and douse us too much this week.

Excellent Joe! I am looking forward to it! Actually a little rain this week would do it some good. The track is extemely loose now, and some rain would settle it down some.
scottman2007 08-31-2008, 08:09 PM so you guys do have a hose to water it down dont you??
So how many ran 1/8th scale on oval today??Anybody coverting to late models Yet????????

Yes, technically, there is a hose to water it with, and we used to do that, untill Joe got the water bill....now we have just learned to "run it dry". There is so much sand, that you could water it well, and 5 minutes later it would be dry again, so we just gave up on watering it and run it with no water at all.
There was no race today, Steve and I just took time from our Holiday weekend and family to get the track ready for next weekend. So far, no one has shown up with a latemodel car. I think your best bet for running our track the rest of the season is to just run your 1/8 scale as a buggy or a truggy. Of course, if you bring it, we will race it. You may need to change your tires from the spec tires to holeshots, or similar tires to get hooked up.
basketcase45 09-05-2008, 10:48 PM Ok people! Sunday is the first race of the series. Who is bringing what to race?
I'll be there with gas truck, mod T4 offroad, and 1/8 buggy on the oval.

garygoins 09-12-2008, 05:46 PM It's really sad when many T.H. racers drive several hrs. to dirt race in Indy and Edinburg, IN. A city with a population of more than 90k should have more than 8 people showing up to race on Sunday. There are some serious
issues that need to be resolved by the owner and the club and until that happens there will always be the same person working on the track and 8 drivers showing up to race on a very dusty, sandy, non jumping offroad,no banked egg shaped oval...

RCDawg83 09-22-2008, 06:56 PM Hey did we get rained out Sunday (9/21)?
If we did that's too bad, but good for me cause I didn't lose any points. My water line sprung a leak and I had a backhoe out digging up my front yard all day.
Two more Sundays on the dirt?

Hey gary! Just in case you look at this again, drop me an email at cclay1282@gmail.com so we can talk... I would love to hear from you, and at least try to settle some of the stuff that needs to be talked about.
Please email me.
RCDawg83 09-28-2008, 11:09 PM Good racing today. Even if only a few of us showed up
Hope we have a good turnout next week to wrap up the dirt season.
HardDriver 02-16-2009, 02:43 AM Hello guys! I would show up but I work on sundays. I just recently bought a r/c nitro car and I just might request a day off from work to come out and see about some advice on different things. The car i bought is a: Forza Blue 2-Speed 4WD Nitro Gas Radio Remote Controlled RC Off-Road Buggy Car .18 Engine. Is that car any good? Is it good for a beginner?
RCDawg83 02-16-2009, 05:59 PM Well its a little early to be working on the track, but appreciate the enthusiasm. I'll have to let the nitro guys comment on your car - being an electric guy, I have no clue  I can tell you that there are several guys who race 1/8 scale buggies, if that's what a Forza is.
We'll probably start getting the dirt track in shape in March or April.
If you are from Terre Haute, come on out to the Hobby Barn some Sunday afternoon and you can at least watch some racing and meet the local racers.
We have always (at least as long as I've been around, which is just a couple years) raced on Sundays, but mostly our work days are Saturdays. And once the track is in shape you can pay five bucks to come out and bash any time you like.

It sounds like an E-bay special, but if it gets you interested in racing, I'm all for it! I think it is a 1/10 scale buggy.... They look good, but if you break down , you may have trouble getting parts for it. We will begin racing in early May, come on out to see us then, we will get you in a race.
Ben Giles 02-17-2009, 09:01 PM I saw your post late last year I am looking for a sunday race track to race 1/8 late models. Please put up your race dates and some pictures.

HardDriver 03-17-2009, 04:02 AM Yes its a 1/10th scale car. Its pretty good, well according to the guy at the hobby barn that tunes the engines. When I get the cash together im going to be getting the tmaxx 3.3. Everybody says I will have alot more fun with the 3.3 then the car I have now. Right now I have my engine running rich to break it in a bit. Probably this friday or saturday ill go back down to the hobby barn and have them lean it out a bit. Not sure if it will do any good on the oval. (not sure if I have enough ground clearance). Im putting together my own site for locals who are into rc nitro cars. I added a forum to it for selling and buying and such. Also if you guys have any announcements for local events let me know Ill post them.
