Just in for a quick Visit.. Need help at work.. ( have worked 7 doubles in a row till today.. so far so good for a regular shift today lol) .. I have tried my hand at casting and one problem that keeps rearing its ugly head is bowing..the sides kick out. they are fine when I pull them but the resin tends to sag hours or days later..Thank god For BOb who rescued the HOHT cars i was SUPPOSE to do but all bowed on me.. any ideas what is wrong? I use Aluminite resin.

What kind of mixing ratios do you have ? I tried alumilite white resin that was mixed 1:1. Does the stuff you use have a different ration like 1:10 or 1:5 ? I never had a bowing problem.

Coach,

You are a workaholic man. All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy...this doesn't apply to you since your name is Dave...LOL

I was able to save one of them and will be painting it up along with Randy who also was able to save one. So Coach your Porsche's will be painted up and will be Super Duper HOHT cars also.

I use smoothon and do have to watch them from bowing for about the first short bit out of the mold while I am deflashing them (easier to do this right away!) but, then the smoothon resin sets and holds good.

Since you use Aluminite I don't know anyting about that type. The only thing I can think of is that you may need to use a slight more amount of hardener? Also when I added color to the non-hardener side with the clear dye I was using it did seem to take a little longer to set up.

Just ordered a bunch of dye from here... http://www.artmolds.com/product_details.cfm?product_id=218&page=0&cat_name=Resin%2FUrethane%20Dyes# This is made by Aluminite and am looking for a darker color in my finished projects that the clear dyes just don't make. Will let you know how they come out when I use this Aluminite dye...might just lighten up my non-hardener side after mixing the dye into it...then I add the two A & B together.

On a note for others that have this happen...all is not lost. What I did was take a Bic (or any other lighter) lighter and heated up the sides from the inside and then quickly took the other end of the lighter and pushed and held sides in.

Coach I am so glad you came up with this whole Porsche idea as these are way cool. I told one of our good friends about the Porsche style we are using and he said that is his favorite car off all times and wants to get a kit car of one someday (maybe a dream here...har)...they scream he says...Zoooom! :woohoo:

You might try to make one using no dye as a test sample to see if it makes a difference. It might be worth a try?

Bob...Randy talked me into painting Coaches Porsche casting in Yell:)w ...zilla

Two things

1. mixture ratio is off. ALumite seems to be more sensitive than others. So it takes longer to harden and leads to No 2 below :)

2. Demolding too soon.

If they have. bowed out too much. Drop in very hot water then put back in mold for tll it rehardens.

Im at work myself, Coach so Ill touch this all quick like. If youre using alumilite white, stop using it. I tried it once and while some bods came out fine, most got kinda rubbery. The regular beige stuff comes out nice, hard, and durable every time. Youve got to get the mixture WAY off in order to get wierd textures, although the color can and does vary.
