Here's this years extra credit side project from 1:1-ville. I've known my buddy Les since 5th grade. He had ripped his freshly painted '68 raggy Camaro back to the firewall and said oops! I felt sorry for the car....not him. ;) I'm just a sucker for the diamond in the rough basket cases

We spent the previous two years farting around collecting and refurbishing parts as time and TM's permitted. Brake and fuel lines were replaced along with a gas tank refurb. At the point that the subframe was restored and the motor/trans were hung I had finally had enough of his dad's dingy cold logging truck barn and we drug it home to my shop for finals.

Little by little we pieced things back together to the point that the motor could be lit and broke in on life support. Then I began the painful process of reskinning the front clip without gerfing it all up and replacing all the wiring looms. Once the front was tied up the rear suspension was gutted and rebushed with new monoleafs.

Spent a good day and a half under the dash sorting out all the
harry high school stuff from the last forty years and getting all the doodads to work correctly. Typically the more ya dig the more ya find...LOL...and so the list went on and on...window regulators, seals , trim...yada yadda. Not to mention some tricky paint work to blend in ommisions and sloppy body work by the painter

Nuthin real fancy here. Rebuilt the existing 350 crate that had 30k on it. Just a few minor goodies along the way. Hogged a few pounds out of the heads and a full gasket match. Mild RV cam with roller rockers and a HD oil pump. Further breathing apperatus is the middle of the road Edelbrock fare.

350 turbo tranny was done by my buddy Keith at Transmissions Plus and hooks up sweet. Shift kit and after market spur gears and whatever other voodoo he do. Worth every penny to have a good automatic tranny guy on yer side!

411 Posi rear end is a bit short for my liking out on the hiway and gets wound up pretty quick, but she's a kick in the pants between stop signs. Speedo goes one way and the fuel guage goes almost as fast in the other direction LOL. :freak:

She runs out good and gets scarey loose hitting second when ya flog it....teehee...it's a ticket waiting to happen and it's red! My wife and I have a pool going for when he gets the first greenie...she has three weeks...I gave him the benefit of the doubt at 90 days.

Les said something pretty funny this morning when we were pounding it with the buffer, "My wife would kill me if she actually knew how much I spent on this!"...and I sez, "Wait til ya get my final bill."...but he kept right on smilling!:p

I'm actually gonna miss having her around...sniffle.

Wow that thing is really sweet. Looks like a tilt wheel and AC. And the wood Sport Wheel is rare. Plus the center console adds to some of the more desirable options on the ragtop. The red dash is unique. That baby could bring some $$$ in the collectors market for sure. And ya that 4.11 gearing is a bit peppy. :)

I'm a bit of a fan of the Gen 1 Camaros. :p

Scott: I knew youd be on this one! hahahaha. She's a standard column, and Les was whining about it...I told him to go on a diet! :p No A/C, just the ole "Astro ventilation" by George Jetson. Sport wheel was a swap meet find and as you would expect came dearly. Center console was an add on some one Bo-jacked in somewhere along it's life, no doubt when the tranny was changed. It was a dead player and required some loomage to be adapted as this car didnt have the correct clippydoodle under the dash. The red dash wasnt half bad. I suspect it was done during the first metamorphasis along with the tranny and console. It had weathered the years nicely so we left it. The interior is a hodge podge of the customer saying, "I dont like that, but I do like that and want that." LOL. Just another succotash Camaro; but I did try to steer him away from the off the rack geedunk, gumball stuff with some minor exceptions and prevent another RS clone from happening. She is what she are...clean and unmolested more or less.

Buster: Part of my contract was first right of refusal should it be sold or any divorce proceedings occur... but I sorely doubt it. Karolynn's a lead footed gear head and once she goes for spin there's not much chance to get our hooks into this one. Besides it's really her car. :p

Wes & RR: Thanx for the thumbs. The early pics dont do her justice. It was very clean to start with...just the usual scrime from being underloved and sitting.

Nuther: Yer down for 35 days! LOL. I'm sure my neighbors will be glad to have this one gone. The test and tune part of the program was pretty rambunctuous and the black marks all over the street 'prolly wont wash away until the fall monsoons hit.

Credit where credit is due. Les was a great customer and did the vast majority of the grotesque dirty work with enthusiasm. He allowed me carte blanche with full control of the project and opened his wallet without squealing. Whatta guy!

Beautiful Car, Bill! (can I ship ya my fordysex for the same treatment?! LOL)

I am not keen on any "gimme-a-ticket" red car, but for this one, I'd make an exception! (as long as I could do the "eraser tucked behind the trigger trick"! LOL Do they make erasers that big? LOL)

Man, I'll bet you will miss that car.... So you did make a spare copy of those keys for emergency use only, right?

Bill, that is one fine ride, cleaner and shinier than new, and the right look for most every Camaro ragtop I ever saw growing up. Cross country road test in order.....
