View Full Version : 2001 Event with Douglas Trumbull
X15-A2 05-22-2008, 02:26 PM Wow! I'm still in the "after glow" of this event at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences HQ in Hollywood. Hosted by Mr. Trumbull and Tom Hanks, this retrospective look at the production of 2001 a Space Odyssey was simply incredible! The presentation was almost entirely never-before-seen images and film which had been gleaned from the Stanley Kubrick archives in London by researcher and author David Larson. Mr Larson flew in from Chicago for the event and is currently working on the definitive book about the production of this film (can't wait!).
The presentation was about 2 hours or more and it just flew by! This was followed by a reception in the lobby which featured a display of 2001 artifacts, including TWO of the white moon-suit space helmets (I got a picture of myself wearing one...). The audience included Mr. Kubricks daughter, many of the cast and crew from the film as well as a whole host of Hollywood production and FX personnel. Notables included Buzz Aldrin and William Creber. You probably know that Mr. Creber was the Art Director responsible for the ship from "Planet of the Apes" and most of the ships from the various Irwin Allen productions. Greg Jien was there along with Scott Alexander and a few other members of our own "HobbyTalk" BB including Carson Dyle and Gkfx (Gene, did I get your ID correct?).
It was so great to meet some of these people from the film industry and to meet some of our own members face-to-face!

Steve244 05-22-2008, 03:33 PM Dammit, Carson was supposed to report on this by 9AM. It's noon in LA. He's got some splainin to do.
X15-A2 05-22-2008, 05:09 PM Okay, here I am wearing the helmet:

Just point me to the TMA-1 dig site...
Carson Dyle 05-22-2008, 06:32 PM For a "2001" fan it doesn't get any better.
At one point I found myself talking to Buzz Aldrin, Douglas Trumbull, and Anya Kubrick. What a rush.

Steve244 05-22-2008, 06:53 PM so um, did the inside of the helmet smell like chewing tobacco?
Carson Dyle 05-22-2008, 07:20 PM More like Beeman's chewing gum.
Steve244 05-22-2008, 08:17 PM loan me a stick, wouldya?
seaQuest 05-22-2008, 09:53 PM loan me a stick, wouldya?
Pay you back later!
ChrisW 05-23-2008, 11:17 AM What a great opportunity! Glad you got to experience it.
I'm REALLY looking forward to Wonderfest and the 2001 recognition. I wonder if they have any access to the same footage?
darkwanderer 05-23-2008, 03:33 PM First congrats on making it to the presentation. I'm sooooo jealous.
I read somewhere that the movie company (MGM?) was planning to release a new DVD with a lot of extras. Has anyone heard any more on this?
Mr.Predicta 05-23-2008, 06:00 PM Did they have the EVA rear thruster pack which was on display at most of the Kubrick Exhibits in the UK?
I had wanted to go to this show but was forced to give up the Idea because of the flight cost from Wisconsin.:(
any additional photos You would like to share would be appreciated
Thanks
Mike L Scott
Carson Dyle 05-24-2008, 12:15 PM The EVA pack was not there.
Greg Jein had offered to provide his spacesuit for display, but for whatever reasons the Academy declined.
I've made arrangements to get additional pix of the helmet and suit, and will gladly post them once I've done.
I'm aware of your replica-building efforts Mr. Predicta, and am anxious to help in any way I can.
BTW, I know what you mean about airfare. I hope to be able to attend Wonderfest this year, but not unless I can do so for less than the price of a new car.
I'm working on getting a higher rez version of this shot, but here's a previously unseen glimpse of the full-size antenna array...

Mr.Predicta 05-24-2008, 02:01 PM thanks man!
that shot of the AE-35
is incredible.
Now Im a bit relieved as I had planned on attending specifically to document the EVA thruster pack so I guess Im not as upset as I could have been.
Im am trying to get the Helm and packs finished for Wonderfest but so far some of the rear pack will be best guess until I get more reference.
thanks for the kind words.
Carson Dyle 05-24-2008, 04:03 PM According to Anya Kubrick, the exhibit dedicated to her father's work has moved on to Rome. Presumedly the thruster pack is still part of the exhibit. She was uncertain if or when the show would make its way to the states, but here's hoping.
gourounaki 05-31-2008, 05:33 AM Er, Carson, I hope you don't mind my saying this, but I see a curious resemblance between the figure in your first photo and Keir Dullea. And I'm not talking about the helmet!
Carson Dyle 05-31-2008, 12:17 PM Don't let Dullea hear you say that. Aging actors are notoriously thin-skinned. ;)
gourounaki 05-31-2008, 03:58 PM Come on, he should be flattered.
Like the Pan Am T-shirt. That logo is so beautiful - or has been made so through its association with 2001, which is of course about the only place it can be seen any more - with the exception of an interesting kit of Boeing's canceled 1968 supersonic airliner, the engine array of which is about the most fancifully SF-looking of any plane ever made. But then this thing never did get made. So it's half science fiction anyway. And indeed looks like the perfect atmospheric sister vessel of the Orion:

One thing I noticed on the 2001 commentary tracks is Keir Dullea doesn't sound ONE DAY OLDER than he did when he filmed 2001.
Gary Lockwood, on the other hand, sounds like a carton-a-day smoker for life.

Wow!
I had that kit!
gourounaki 05-31-2008, 05:47 PM Did you get it when it came out? I got it last year. Revell did a limited re-release. I'd never seen the kit or even the plane before. I saw the kit in the shop and thought it must be some new prototype - for about one second as I apprehended the clearly 1960s packaging - and the Pan Am logo. Odd, it was a kind of blast from the future and the past at the same time...
jheilman 05-31-2008, 08:59 PM Gary is quite a story teller. Myself and 3 friends descended on him at a Trek con years ago and just had a Q&A for nearly an hour. Some of the yarns from 2001 sounded like fish stories, but they were all fascinating. Looking forward to seeing him again with Keir at Wonderfest. Keir does seem to age very well. I was stunned seeing him in 2010 not looking a day older in 16 years. Of course, makeup may have helped.
If it was stated previously, I apologize, but when is the Larson 2001 book expected to be released?
Carson Dyle 05-31-2008, 09:44 PM Like the Pan Am T-shirt. That logo is so beautiful
My all time favorite, lol. And yeah, my fondness for it probably has a lot to do with the fact that it’s featured in my favorite film. Hell, Aurora’s Pan Am Space Clipper was the first plastic model kit I ever built. Ah, nostalgia…
Gary Lockwood, on the other hand, sounds like a carton-a-day smoker for life.
Yeah, he seems to have followed the classic aging jock pattern. Talking with him one gets the feeling that lots of cigs, lots of booze, and lots of red meat have, over the years, taken a certain toll. Great sense of humor though.
when is the Larson 2001 book expected to be released?
No date has been set, but it’s certainly not going to be any time soon.
gourounaki 06-01-2008, 04:02 AM I've realised there's a deeper and somewhat lugubrious reason for my fondness for that Pan Am logo. I hate all commercial logos and brand names so why do I make an exception here? It's more than just 2001. It's because it's dead, and therefore harmless. Incapable of evil. Oops! Too political; I'll shut up and go decal my SST Clipper...
Zorro 06-01-2008, 07:56 PM Universal HD is running 2001: A Space Odyssey again tonight (Sunday 6/1) at 8 pm and 11:30 pm.
