I think the starter has died on my portable welder, but I would like to convert it to rope-pull start. Is there any way to excite the coils if I change it over? I guess I'll still need to keep a battery on it.

Your engine, since it has electric start, probably has an alternator to keep the battery charged, so you should have power available once the engine is running. This can be a problem however if you have a fuel solenoid valve mounted to your carburetor. If you have a solenoid valve you will need power to activate the valve before the engine can be started.

Thanks, that's good news. The carb doesn't have the solenoid on it.
