dont know if anyone remembers, but i showed up here last fall with a B&S 12hp motor out of my dear old sweet mom's lawn tractor that was crapping out. it had trouble starting and would die out when it got warm and struggle badly. oh and the compression test was around 20psi and it backfired when turned off lol.
well you guys got me started and just wanted to say thanks. i pulled the engine out and brought it back home. pulled it apart in the warmer days of the winter and at the start of the spring. turns out you guys were right, the valves were screwed! they were stretched by as much as 0.008" and the seats were gone. i shortened them with some light sandpaper and reground the valves by hand. cleaned all the crap out of the old girl and now it purrs like a kitten:) my mommy is very happy. would you believe i can actually now start it with no choke and on the lowest throttle setting? very amazing!
