View Full Version : Your Local Raceway Needs You!

Over the years most of us that race 1/24 scale have seen local raceways come and go. There's nothing worse than suddenly having no where to race. You can get the Joneses real bad, real quick.

The purpose of my post is simply to encourage racers every where - of every scale - to support your local raceway. Raceway owners don't always have (or make) time to say "Thank You" as often they should. I think they have a lot on their mind. But as a racer, I believe that every Racer is vitally important to the health and well-being of a raceway. Having one more person to race and turn marshall raises the "Fun Factor" for everyone else. Having one more person that buys a pair of braid helps at the end of the month when the rent is due. Having one more person in the room raises everyone else's spirits just because it makes the place look busier.

Racers come and go almost as quickly as raceways. Some just seem to drop off the face of the Earth. If you haven't been to your local raceway in a while, make a point to stop by this week and say hello.

Going to the slot car track these days is a real good entertainment value.
Just compare it to how much it costs to go to a movie or going to a bar and getting loaded.

A slot car track is a great place where people can congregate who share a common interest.

I'll stop in at Boogie Speedway on a day when they’re not racing the class I race just to pick up some parts and end up staying to marshal the track because they need me.

Gene,
I see you're in S.E. PA. I live in DE but am originally from da philly. Are there any LHS with tracks around the Delaware Valley that you can point me to? Thanks!!

PS 1/64 or 1/32 scale, that is.

Sadly there's not alot anymore. :(

Here's the few I can think of:

DCM Raceway (http://www.dcmraceway.com/) Trenton, NJ - A nice newer shop, run by a dedicated HO racer. Has a WizTrack and a Tubbie. Has a decent inventory, heavy into Fray/VHORS T-Jet stuff.

The Groove East Greenville, PA - 1/24 Oval and Drag racing, also has a 6'x20' MaxTrax and supposedly a recently added Tomy oval (not sure on that one). HO is kind of a side show for them, so HO inventory is little to basically none. Still a cool place to race, plenty of pit space.

The Race Place, Quakertown Farmer's Market, Quakertown, PA - A typical Farmer's Market Hobby Shop, 1/24 Road Course (the black smaller "King" track) and a pitifully delapidated Buck Scorpion. No pit space. Usual REH/Wiz suggested inventory, unfortunately rarely has "the good stuff" to meet a racer's needs. Our local gang converged here regularly a couple years ago, few of us go there today. As an opposing view to this topic, we were supporting this local raceway very very well, we got absolutely no support in return from this shop. The final straw for me was when during the 4 weeks prior to a scheduled Tyco race at this shop, they had not a single pair of shoes or slip on tires for these cars...even though we were asking for them every weekend.

That's all I can think of as far a retail shops in the DelVal area. There are many more "Garage shops" though...I'll get to them later.

BTW, I deliver (for work) down that way, you can be at my place in 1 1/2 hrs, usually 1 3/4 tops. If you're interested, shooter's coming over saturday for some test-n-tune, just general messing around. That goes for anyone else too.

Thanks so much for the invitation, but if they're available, I'll take a raincheck for now. I already have other plans lined up for this Saturday. Would love to come up that way sometime though, see your track and learn a thing or two or twenty. Still a newbie and I have a good ways to go before I consider myself anything but. I'm in the middle of a build and have not really seen other tracks that are aound, so.....So far, it's been all learning on my own from what I've gotten done and what I've picked up hanging around here. :) Thanks again and thanks for the LHS info as well !!!

The absolute truth right there. It doesn't matter if you might save a few bucks here and there online (ultimately it's not that much, thanks to shipping)... I'd rather pay the extra to my local shop to help keep them afloat. Without a track, what's the point of having cars? And you can't say 1/32 and HO guys can have home tracks as a defense... neither is as good for meeting new racers to share the hobby with.
