SMS88 05-08-2008, 04:44 PM Lesney box art remained second to none even to the end. Corgi gave Lesney a bit of competition in the late 1960s with their TV items like the Batmobile but Lesney just grew into letting the artist decorate the whole sides of the boxes with drawing that sometimes looked a lot more realistic than the toys:)
Interesting to see the Ford A series pulling the boat - this 1:1 was not a success by the usual scale of Ford europe´s sales back in the 1970s & 1980s and stylewise the cab used many parts of the very successful Ford Transit minivan which was perhaps too cheap to appeal to many customers.I think the Jag is one of the better looking Kings of the post Jack Odell era,but I am not sure if the woody wagon looks like the real deal -were the rear passenger doors really so narrow compared to the length of the car? The boat is very nice and I must confess to liking it best when pulled by the Muira (although probably nobody with a real Muira ever used it to tow:freak:)
It makes me wonder if Lesneys tow hook policy was simply based on 50% of all cars in the range getting a towhook rather than considering the relevence of the model having a hook. The 55/59/73 Mercurys have bumper cut outs for tow hooks but none were ever fitted, suggests a last minute change of plans when in fact these would be logical choices.
Also the 6 Ford Pickup, 23 & 34 VW Campers and 56 Pininfarina would be good choices for towing boats and caravans yet Lesney chose sports cars instead:freak: perhaps it was a random quota decison?
But the 27 Mercedes 230SL ,14 Iso Grifo 75 Berlinetta rw only and 5 Lotus Europa did all have towhooks yet few people use low high performance cars for towing in real life.
karl-e 05-09-2008, 04:27 PM Nice items
Always good to see stuff from your collection Mountain.
I'm curious, how 'bout showing some photos of your favorite cabinets? From what I've seen so far you must have an awsome collection :)

The Moutain 05-12-2008, 09:20 PM bazzel, the super kings were definitely a nice line. a little overboard with the bazooka, but look at that chrome. of course it comes with the high powered lledo engine. :) as sms88 said, outstanding box art and nice to see the more realistic art return in the late 70’s.

probably not a good idea to use a high performance car for towing, super king muira’s can handle the hauling.

the rear door does seem a bit off with the rest of the car. very versatile model.

box art through the years with the leyland tipper. the blue box super kings with modest artwork that does a fine job.

big mx Leyland.

karl-e, i used to have walls full of models, but not anymore. most are in storage containers, except for a few hundred sf from 1969 - around 1983 that are on the wall in a couple of hundred of the home displays from 1969.
i would like to display them once again, who knows.

I would go crazy if I was not able to display all my "treasures" I even put my displays on display :freak:
But then of cause I got a relatively small collection, and a "toy-room" to keep it in (the wife will not allow "toys" in our living-room) :)
A couple of hundreds home displays, surely indicates that you have been collecting for a long time ;)

The Bazooka must be from the final years of Lesney when Jack Odell came back out of retirement or was it his last casting before his first retirement?? The fact that LLedo name appears on the block here is reason for any lledo collector to require one in his collection -does it appear on any more Lesneys?
I have to disagree with Mountain about the boxart - my favourite art has to be the G-box style speeding truck in the centre and a close 2nd is the original stylish Kingsize box.I see no reason to picture the actual model on the box, the imagination of the artist inspired kids like myself, a picture of the toy that is clearly visible through the front window is adding nothing significant to my mind......
Making space for a woman is the best reason to pack away a lot of toys, only keeping the favourites out.Having a forum like this is a great excuse to go digging in those boxes:wave: Few euro collectors have even one store display, let alone many - can Mountain show us a bunch of stocked store displays sitting together (are they one for every year, or every six months or ????)
Here is a real K4 still at work daily in Malta in 2007,with grateful thanks to Peter Skerry for the pic. This cab design ´Ergo´ was used on AEC, Leyland and Albion chassis from at least 1966-1979 - these 3 brands all belonged to Britsih Leyland in the 1970s. Only read about big MX sets, never seen a real one although I think the tractor factory was discussed here a couple of years ago...

The Moutain 05-18-2008, 07:47 PM karl-e, nice cabinet shot. talk about graphics, how about the traffic game. imagine the room needed to display all the carry cases that were issued.
the few hundred home displays sounds like more than they appear, they are the same as the pair in your cabinet, except with a different card.
here is a picture of a few hundred sf on the wall and some unused home displays

the bazooka along with the cambuster had the lledo engine, both from the early 70’s along with the semi- retirement. some other models had a lesney engine, like the marauder sk 45

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/4766/maraudersk45lj5.jpg
looking at the back of the sk‘s , i guess the graphics can go either way, i like both of these. the return of the realism on the box was something i enjoyed.:)
plus the front of a few sk-20’s and thanks for the real k-4

karl-e 05-19-2008, 02:49 AM Mountain; Awsome, I don't think I have seen so many homedisplay in one place before
Any chance of a trade ? as you point out, the artwork are different.
Thanks for all the photos, I like to see 70's stuff, even though I don't collect it.
I don't plan to collect carry-cases, I only got a few, but I'm either fortunate to have plenty of space to display :) or you could say that my collection is to small :freak:
SMS88 05-19-2008, 07:41 AM Ah, so these are home displays - I got them mixed up with store displays:p
still a very nice way to display cars and perhaps Mountain found a stash of unsold store stock rather than paying 49c each? I have never had an opportunity to buy displays like these, and they certainly do display cars for the best possible views
I remember ´Lesney´cast on engine blocks from my childhood, nice to see Jack Odell signing his name to what perhaps at the time he intended to be his final Lesneys, and it turned out to be an accurate premonition that the Lledo name would in fact replace Lesney in the UK toy market, not just on a few million SuperKings engine blocks;)
