View Full Version : Just saw Iron Man, and....(NO SPOILERS)
MartinHatfield 05-02-2008, 01:21 PM *SPOILER FREE ZONE*
All I can say is WOW!! Favreau and company have put the super hero film world on notice. "Do it right!"
Everything about this film was just right. Not too glitzy and not too dark...just right. The world of Tony Stark is real, and now. The first two reels of this movie make it clear that we have problems in Afghanistan.
The rest of the movie givs us a wonderful "What-if" look into our current situation and says, "Here's how it would work if we REALLY had a superhero to help us."
I am not trying to be political with my review, that is just how I saw the film and one of its messages.
Robert Downey Jr. could not have been better in his role as Tony Star/Iron Man, and everynoe else was spot-on to what we needed to believe in this world that was created for our entertainment.
The visual effects were stunning without being overbearing. There was only one flaw in them that I saw, but I will not discuss that here for fear or leaking spoilers.
Go and see it, and enjoy all that is Iron Man.
modelgeek 05-02-2008, 01:33 PM Heading out the door now to go see it!!!! Jeff
Zorro 05-02-2008, 04:26 PM One could nitpic but I agree that they got this one right. True to the mythos, great SPX and production design, good linear storyline. It's Downey's movie though - any other actor wouldn't have been half as fun or entertaining. I'd definitely put it on the "A-List" of Superhero movies.
modelgeek 05-02-2008, 06:59 PM Ironman was awesome !!!!!! Screw the nit picking it was just great!!! Downey is the only guy to play this role.... it is a good time !!!!! The Dark Knight and Hulk trailers were good can't wait to see those flicks as well ,,,Jeff
flyingfrets 05-02-2008, 07:42 PM I haven't seen it yet, but every review I've seen so far is raving about it and Downey's work in it. Can't wait!
Tomylord 05-02-2008, 07:48 PM you have to stay till the credits is over...
Ohio_Southpaw 05-02-2008, 08:23 PM One could nitpic.....
Members here nitpicking? Surely you jest!
Zorro 05-03-2008, 11:19 AM Even in its truncated comic book form, I was always impressed with Stan Lee and Larry Lieber's Iron Man origin story. It was particularly clever and sophisticated compared to most comic book origins. But the way the movie updates that origin and fleshes it out is one of the most impressive elements of the film. It ain't easy to write this stuff and make it work - but the filmmakers did an excellent job in that department.

Ohio_Southpaw 05-03-2008, 05:27 PM Just got back from seeing it and from the point of view of having never read an Ironman comic book, it's a damn good movie. Entertaining, action filled and went along at a very nice pace. Gwyneth Paltrow as a redhead definitely scores mega-super-duper high points from me!

She's definitely more lifelike in this than Sky Cap'n.
And yeah, stay thru the credits. I kid you not, three fanboys across the aisle SHRIEKED LIKED LITTLE GIRLS at it.
modelgeek 05-04-2008, 02:16 AM Just saw it again tonight!!! Still good the 2nd time ...lol...Jeff
Dave Hussey 05-04-2008, 10:28 AM Saw it last night with the whole family.
Loved it!
And so did everyone else in the theatre for the third sold-out showing yesterday!
And it was worth the wait to wait for the tidbit at the end of the credits!

jheilman 05-04-2008, 02:23 PM So, if you no nothing about the character or comic, is the post-credit thing still worth waiting for? I mean does it imply something about a sequel or is it related to this film?

It very much does imply something for sequel(s) - as well as for all new productions - but if you know little about Marvel comics, it'll probably be meaningless to you. And staying for it doesn't really add anything to the movie itself...it's really just a teaser.
jage1966 05-04-2008, 05:03 PM I loved it, too, and rank it among the top five comic book movies I've seen. My only nitpick (LOL) are the similarities to Robocop, Robocop 2 and The Rocketeer. During the climactic battle, I just had this feeling of deja vu. Been there, done that. But other than that, I really liked the movie a lot.

El Gato 05-04-2008, 06:12 PM It was awesome. I liked that it was a character-driven story. No one else but Downey would have pulled it off.
Just to show you how enjoyable the movie is, my wife, who had never heard of Iron Man until I shrieked like a little girl when I read online they were making the movie... er, I mean, until she met me, was snickering at some of the scenes hours after we saw it.
Dave Hussey 05-04-2008, 06:51 PM I've seen The Rocketeer and I think its a great movie. My young son loves it too and we have watched it together a number of times in recent months.
I saw Iron Man last night, and while the protagonist of both films can fly, I wouldn't say that I had a deja vu feeling after watching Iron Man. The movie stands on its own IMHO.

420 Tech R/C 05-04-2008, 07:09 PM it's good to see that they finally got a comic movie RIGHT!!!after the way holly wood has ruined a couple good comic series storylines and relations to other comic series it was nice to see that this one way fairly straight forward and true to the comic.
420 Tech R/C 05-04-2008, 07:10 PM now I wish some one would make one on the wolverine saga
Zombie_61 05-04-2008, 07:40 PM Saw it yesterday; a couple of very minor quibbles aside, definitely one of the best "superhero" films ever IMO. Good pacing, the "updated" origin story was handled well, solid performances (particularly Robert Downey Jr., which I expected), good effects, some well-placed laughs...this could be the beginning of a successful new franchise for Marvel Enterprises and Paramount Pictures if they don't screw up the sequels.
Eric K 05-04-2008, 08:18 PM Depends on how another movie goes this summer. ;)
Zorro 05-04-2008, 09:02 PM Depends on how another movie goes this summer. ;)
I predict we'll never see a third Hulk movie.
ClubTepes 05-04-2008, 11:36 PM Saw it today.
Absolutly loved it.
Downy is great as Stark.
Well written, good balance of humor and drama.
Only curious about a couple of story point motivations.
I love it when people leave and don't watch the credits, and they give you a little bonus after.
Then they find out a day later that they missed something.
darkwolf29a 05-05-2008, 08:50 AM I'll be seeing this one next weekend, I hope. ;)
It has been getting rave reviews from everywhere though, so I'm looking forward to it :)
deadmanincfan 05-05-2008, 12:08 PM ...sure...the ONE time I let my lady talk me out of leaving before the credits ended... :(
MartinHatfield 05-05-2008, 01:39 PM Only curious about a couple of story point motivations.
And which ones were those Club? PM me if ya wanna.
Matthew Green 05-05-2008, 08:12 PM Darn....I wonīt get to see it until itīs out on DVD. In Mexico they dubbed the movie and didnīt put subtitles. Not understanding Spanish that well, it sucks to be me.
wolverine is coming......
MartinHatfield 05-06-2008, 03:27 PM Yeah, and so are The Avengers (2 movies) and The Watchmen (I know, a different universe).
deadmanincfan 05-06-2008, 03:50 PM ...and with any kind of luck, Justice League of America...
modelgeek 05-06-2008, 07:14 PM ...and with any kind of luck, Justice League of America...
be looking foward to that movie!!!!
linksinachain 05-09-2008, 11:03 AM Arrrgh! I got bullied into leaving part-way through the credits!
Can someone PLEASE PM me and tell me what I missed???
But overall, Ironman and Batman Begins rank supreme for Hero movies from this nobody! ;)
Thanks,

JeffG 05-10-2008, 08:41 AM Finally saw Iron Man. Excellent! It's really important for these types of films that you're not just waiting to see the super hero elements of the story and that the 'normal' moments in a characters life are just as compelling and entertaining. I'm happy to say that with a good script and Downey's acting chops this was pulled off in top notch fashion. Good stuff!
IndyRC_Racer 05-12-2008, 11:35 AM I enjoyed the movie, but felt it was missing something. I will say I enjoyed the outcome of Starks final press conference - it really fit well into the character/ego of Stark.

Well, just for the sake of discussion, what did you feel it was missing?
linksinachain 05-12-2008, 12:16 PM ...you sure you wanna know, links ol' bean?
Ugh... If it's THAT good, I'll just wait for the DVD.
This really is killing me, though! :freak:

Well my jaw went directly to the floor on that one. But but but I though that the identity of IronMan was a secret, that only a few knew. I don't believe this, it's probably a joke or something. Overall, a very very good movie, the start of another super hero franchise. Can't wait for the sequel.
Hulk 3, I don't see it happening either. As for Justice League, well at the rate it gets pushed around, 'will have to wait 'til 2010....... 2010.... humm it rings a bell.... maybe something will happen around Jupiter.......
I had to get out before the end of the credits (a little boy got sick in front of us so there was a fraking smell floating around...) SO what did we missed?
kit-junkie 05-12-2008, 02:48 PM SO what did we missed?Nothing all that spectacular, if you ask me. The movie was great. I loved the entire thing. Was the extra tidbit worth waiting for? Nah...
IndyRC_Racer 05-12-2008, 03:51 PM What I felt was missing from the movie was more heart (pun intended). I liked the movie and the characters, but just didn't feel as drawn into the whole movie as I should have been. I would say that the movie itself did a very good job of laying the foundation for future movies, but doesn't stand up as well on its own.
Will I see the next Ironman movie? - definately. Will I rush out to buy this on DVD? - no.

Fair enough. It's certainly more of a "popcorn" movie than is Batman Begins, for instance. That said, it hits so much closer to the mark on just about every level than, say, either of the Fantastic Four movies - that it just goes to show that there is a pronounced difference in quality between Orville Redenbacher and "Chintzy Pop".
JeffG 05-13-2008, 07:41 AM The cool thing about Iron Man is that although it wasn't as dark as something like Batman Begins, it was far from silly as well. I for one was somewhat disappointed with Transformers and the lightheartedness of it whereas Iron Man seemed to have just the right amount of humor, tenseness and drama for this type of film.

Did anyone notice Captain Americas shield on the table in the lab? I didn't.

Interesting how Marvel is seeding it's continuity as it heads toward The Avengers in 2010. I haven't read the comics in many years so I assume this is purely a "movie" invention?
Chuck 05-16-2008, 10:01 AM You can find the teaser ending in multiple places on the 'net:

Whoops! This video has already been removed! Keep searching!
Chuck 05-16-2008, 10:11 AM Basically, (spoiler)
Stark comes home to find a shadowy figure in his living room. he walks out of the dark and we see it's Samuel L. Jackson sporting a black eye patch. They have a short conversation, something like:
Jackson: I am Iron Man, huh?
Stark: Who are you?
Jackson: You're not the only Superhero
Stark: ?
Jackson: I guess it's time to tell you about the Avenger initiative.
Chuck 05-16-2008, 10:20 AM Here's a video of the "spoiler" ending that hasn't been taken down yet:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/213235.html
Steve244 05-18-2008, 08:27 PM um so what's the Avenger Initiative? Are Steed and Emma coming back?
(saw it today. was kinda bored. Realize it's a comic book and all, but I couldn't pretend the effects were real. Downy was good.)
Spoilers- Highlight to read
Avengers: Like Xmen, but it's Captain America, Thor, IM, Antman, Wasp, and sometimes Hulk. Sometimes Spidey. They move in and out of the little club .
Oh, sometimes Scarlet Witch, sometimes Quicksilver, but Shield is like their foot soldiers and backup. Avengers initiative, just like the individual who plays the shadowy figure in the scene after the credits, was lifted from Ultimate Avengers. If Hulk is ANYTHING like the UA Hulk, THAT would be great!!!
Steve244 05-19-2008, 11:05 AM Ok cool. Sure we couldn't work in Mrs. Peel? JohnP would approve.
I think I like my superheros unmechanized. Like Superman or Spidey.
Too much hardware has me looking for the underlying engineering and it comes up wanting. Except for Batman. Don't ask me why.
I couldn't stop wondering if the thing it Stark's chest (4 inch stove pipe from the looks of it) was designed to stop shrapnel from entering his heart, why disconnecting it for a few seconds would make him weak.
