View Full Version : Product development of LiPo battery trays
bgruen 04-30-2008, 08:48 PM Maybe I'm out'ta line here, but I am really disappointed with the lack of specific Race Spec lipo / Brushless ESC trays. Everyone at the local track (including myself) have taken Dremels to 4 and 5 slot trays to make a tray that will hold a Race Spec battery and a GTB ESC, but by now we shouldn't have to.
Instead of focusing all energies on turning out the new round of solid chassis why have they not started by banging out a simple tray and ESC mount for existing slider rigs? It would give them something to test with to determine how the next generation of solids should be laid out.
I have a great solution for my Maverick slider, but if I designed a specific purpose battery tray for the Race Spec I could probably slide the battery rearward another hole or two. A lot of the Hyperdrives I see have a rather precarious ESC mount, definitely less than ideal.

jdearhart 04-30-2008, 09:09 PM Hyperdrive actually has a slider tray made for the brushless speed controls. A GTB fits perfectly, and a LRP TC will fit if you remove the fan and do a little work on the heatsink. I've been running my slider with the brushless tray and have no problem fitting the GTB flat with an Orion 3200 carbon pack. I made a lexan tray for the battery to sit in, and I tape it from front to rear using the rear tape slot, and pull the tape across the front where the receiver pack would go.

I have a really cool tray, holdown bracket, designed for Silva,AE,LE type cars but i've sold to other guy's running maverick,KSg,HD,just needing some minor trimming.
I'll post a few pics in a little bit.
Tray,holdown bracket,standoffs.
I haven't done a batch lately but if i get some interest i can do a small run.standoffs are correct height for 3200 orion battery which majority run,we did these trays last year, they have been run on banked asphalt, flat asphalt, carpet,in the 21.5,17.5,10.5 lipo classes.
Nice Kevin looks to be your own chassie also? Why not make these AE guys a solid ha ha.

wait a minute 05-03-2008, 01:28 PM crc has a tray too but not sure if its available yet.

Well that's all well and good, but these things should be available by now.
Due to the bulk of the brushless ESCs and the lack of mass of the Race Spec pack the overall configuration is a bit of a no-brainer, ESC vertical at the rear tire and the battery back as far as it can go. It should take all of an hour to sketch it out and send it to the machine shop. The only additional variable is do you want to make a smaller ESC heatsink and back the battery up even more.
I know one racer who has given up on Maverick due to the inability to get a new solid chassis plate. The story we have is that Jake does not want to cut anymore '05 plates and the next generation isn't ready / available. Jake's loss is Hyperdrive's gain as Jim races quite a lot and is planning on both the big events in Easley this year. I'm sure there will be people who will prefer the '05 solid to the new one, so I really do not get Jake's reluctance to pull a small batch for inventory.
I finally have my Maverick '05 slider rolling with the 21.5 setup, but it did require building a custom ESC bracket AND drilling / modding the chassis plate. I wouldn't need the bracket with a properly designed plate as there is extra room at the rear of the tray for additional carbon fiber when using the Race Spec pack.
Forgive me if I sound frustrated, but it's been that kind of year so far.

I use to run a few Mavericks and Jake had a really nice brushless esc mount that went on the shock tower I bought 3 of them when he brought them out.
What does Hyperdrive offer that is equiped for lipo?
There is only 3 chassie makers making brushless racing only chassies at this time RIP Leading Edge and CRC allthough all of these are made for 4 cell apps.
And Leading Edge makes a LIPO only chassie 135 new car add your stuff.
RIP does have a 6 cell solid wide front and narrow front that can be used for lipo I am going to run a 6 cell as a 21.5 lipo car.ESC pad is behind the cell slots in front of the left wheel.
Chassies makers need to fill an order of so many chassies ,so if your buddy only wants one chassie Jake is going to order up 20 or more to be made then what use the rest of them for paper weights.
Why be mad at the manfs taking time to get a good product out you know one you dont need to mod or cut up.
Jake
Tornado_Racing 05-04-2008, 02:54 PM Hyperdrive has a 6-cell tray for the Slider and a 6-cell solid chassis plate. Both will require you to stand up the speedo.
J-Dub Racing 05-04-2008, 02:59 PM I think most are really holding off due to the fact that Lipo really isn't that popular yet. You have to remember that the racing season is over for most. Companies will come out with there new products in the fall/winter. Look how long it took them to get the brushless top plates. Now no one really uses them. A big waste of time and money for companies that created them.
nickbell1390 05-04-2008, 06:37 PM the irs shockwave is set up for both brushless and lipo.
BigBoyT1 05-04-2008, 07:31 PM KSG gen 1 brushless li-po battery tray
KSG gen 2 brushless li-po battery tray
Hyperdrive Pro 3 brushless li-po battery tray
No need to tape batteries in ever again! New battery tray for KSG gen1, KSG gen 2, and Hyperdrive Pro 3 have clamping systems to secure your li-po batteries. Also have larger patch for brushless speed control.
Now taking orders. $35.00 (batteries not inculded) plus shipping.

The Stryker was designed from the ground up to run lipo/brushless and it rocks!
rcgen 05-05-2008, 10:18 PM Here's my Prototype OPC Maverick with a 21.5/lipo and a GTB mounted on the left shock tower.

wait a minute 05-07-2008, 01:06 PM that is an interesting speed control mount. what is the mount bolted to?
98Ron 05-07-2008, 02:06 PM Jake has had that mounting plate availalbe for about a year now. The plate mount to the left rear shock tower and I tape my speed control to it, works great!!!!
rcgen 05-07-2008, 03:04 PM As 98Ron said but I created my own with some scrape piece of rubber like delrin. I'm going to cutout another battery slot towards the rear. This way the lipo pack can be moved more to the rear.

ESC is OVER the BATTERY? That's nuts! The weight should be as low as possible, how could that possibly work well?

Can you make me a couple of these? If so how much? I just want the top part and the stand offs. I will adapt it to my existing trays. PM me the info if you are interested.

That's what I thought at first, but now I have an option move the lipo pack forward one cell or all the way back. Also, one of the 13.5 Maverick guys at our track runs it that was and is pretty fast with that setup. He now has it on his 21.5 too.

Stoney you can try the long RPM ballcups for your standoffs. You just need to cut the ends off and use an old battery tray if you have any. I'm trying to do the same for my touring car.
napolean 05-09-2008, 04:30 PM Here a pic of my Stryker, I believe it's the only car out there now that was designed specifically for B/L Lipo. Randy from Big Boy Toys produces this conversion and other related parts, all top quality. This car has been a KILER at ourlocal flat asphalt track!
