Hello Quarterscalers-

I'm a Mechanical Engineering Technology student at Alfred State College in Alfred, NY. For my senior project, I want to construct a 1/4 scale ISMA style supermodifed. I have never seen a 1/4 scale in person, so I have a lot of questions...ok a TON of questions.

1. What sizes and materials are generally used for chassis construction?

2. Where/what shocks does everyone use in 1/4 scale?

3. What tire widths are available for 1/4 scale?

4. Is there anyone who makes a quick change rear end?

5. How is braking accomplished?

That's all I have for now. Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

Chassis constuction usually consists of either 3/8 or 1/2 .035 wall 4130 chromolly tubing. There are various manufacturers of shocks.....most any would work for your application. Im sure if you ask some guys here on hobbytalk about tires....most would donate some to you....I could prolly throw something in. Tires are made in usually 2,3, or 4 inch widths and vary from 17 to 19 inches in diameter. These cars are powered much like a typical gocart, with a centrifical clutch. There is a brake arm connected to the motor that applies pressure to the clutch bell. There are no "disc" brakes used in any current applications. You can get quick change skellenger rearends that you can usually find on ebay but you will pay a pretty penny for them!!!

Hope this helps,
Chance

Thanks for the very quick response!

Next question: what gear ratios are common for 1/4 scale racing? Mostly we'd like to know the ratios that are common at Freddie's and Easley. Eventually we'll take a trip out to Freddie's to see this stuff first hand, but we need a starting point first.

Thanks,
Matt

A good starting point for Freddies is a 15/77 (5.133).

There is also a good bit of info on the QSAC.ORG web sight, size limits, wieght limits and so on. I have a set of the old plastic type shocks if you are interested in them. You can email me at cphil54@yahoo.com.

Just was browsing around the QSAC site and checking out the rules. I had no idea there even was a supermodified class. Does anybody have pictures of a 1/4 scale super? I'd love to see it.

Here is a link to some pics from the '07 supernationals. I am pretty sure the red car is technically a supermodified. If I remember correctly it is a Pheonix Arrow and does have a skellenger quick change in it. It is owned by Bob's Motorsports. It is a beautiful car !
